UniFi security operations: traditional firewall rules, firewall groups, zone-based firewall (ZBF), ACL rules, port forwarding, VPN tunnels, site-to-site VPN, and content filtering. Use when the task involves network access control, firewall policies, traffic blocking, or VPN configuration. Zone-based firewall requires UniFi Network 9.0+ and local API mode.

UniFi Security Operations

API mode requirements:

  • Zone-based firewall, firewall rules/zones/groups: local only
  • ACLs, traffic matching lists: local only (the console's integration API)
  • Port forwarding, VPN: local only

Roles: with bearer tokens, creating or updating firewall policies, ZBF policies, legacy firewall rules and network-to-zone assignments needs the admin role. The operator role can still manage ACL rules, port forwards, groups, zones and traffic matching lists.

Traditional Firewall Rules

ToolDescription
list_firewall_rulesList all firewall rules on a site
create_firewall_ruleCreate a new firewall rule
update_firewall_ruleModify an existing firewall rule
delete_firewall_ruleDelete a firewall rule (requires confirm=True)

Firewall Groups

Groups are reusable IP/port sets referenced by rules.

ToolDescription
list_firewall_groupsList all firewall groups
get_firewall_groupGet group members and details
create_firewall_groupCreate a generic firewall group
create_address_groupCreate an IP address group
create_port_groupCreate a port group
update_firewall_groupUpdate group members
delete_firewall_groupDelete a group (requires confirm=True)

Zone-Based Firewall (requires Network 9.0+, local API)

Zones

ToolDescription
list_firewall_zonesList all security zones
list_firewall_zones_v2List zones using the v2 API
create_firewall_zoneCreate a new zone
update_firewall_zoneModify zone name or settings
delete_firewall_zoneDelete a zone (requires confirm=True)
assign_network_to_zoneAdd a network/VLAN to a zone
unassign_network_from_zoneRemove a network from a zone
get_zone_networksList networks assigned to a zone
get_zone_statisticsTraffic stats for a zone

ZBF Policies

ToolDescription
list_firewall_policiesList all inter-zone policies
get_firewall_policyGet a specific policy
create_firewall_policyCreate a zone-to-zone policy
update_firewall_policyModify a policy (action, schedule, match criteria)
delete_firewall_policyDelete a policy (requires confirm=True)

ZBF Matrix

ToolDescription
get_zbf_matrixFull zone-to-zone policy matrix
get_zone_policiesAll policies for a specific zone
get_zone_matrix_policyPolicy between two specific zones
update_zbf_policyUpdate a zone-pair policy
delete_zbf_policyDelete a zone-pair policy
block_application_by_zoneBlock a DPI application category in a zone
list_blocked_applicationsList applications blocked by zone policies

ACL Rules (local API)

ToolDescription
list_acl_rulesList all ACL rules on a site
get_acl_ruleGet a specific ACL rule
create_acl_ruleCreate a new ACL rule
update_acl_ruleModify an ACL rule
delete_acl_ruleDelete an ACL rule (requires confirm=True)

Port Forwarding

ToolDescription
list_port_forwardsList all port forwarding rules
create_port_forwardAdd a port forward (external → internal IP:port)
update_port_forwardModify an existing port forward
delete_port_forwardDelete a port forward (requires confirm=True)

VPN

ToolDescription
list_vpn_serversList VPN server configurations
list_vpn_tunnelsList active VPN tunnels
list_site_to_site_vpnsList site-to-site VPN configurations
get_site_to_site_vpnGet a specific S2S VPN
update_site_to_site_vpnModify a site-to-site VPN

Content Filtering

ToolDescription
list_content_filtersList content filtering policies
list_content_filter_categoriesList available filter categories
update_content_filterEnable/disable filter categories
delete_content_filterRemove a content filter

Example Workflows

# Audit firewall posture
Get ZBF matrix to see all zone-to-zone policies, then list firewall policies
for zones with "allow all" rules

# Block a new threat IP
Create address group "Blocked-IPs", add the malicious IP, then create a
firewall rule to drop traffic from that group

# Set up IoT isolation
Create zone "IoT", assign IoT VLAN to it, then create ZBF policy blocking
IoT → LAN (action: drop) but allowing IoT → WAN (action: allow)

# Expose a home server
Create port forward: external port 443 → 192.168.1.50:443 (tcp)

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
