Write or modify PostgreSQL queries, schemas, and migrations with parameter safety, data integrity, and operational verification. Use when a feature, bug fix, or refactor in a repository detected as PostgreSQL requires SQL, DDL, indexes, or migrations, even when the user does not name the database; do not use for review-only requests.

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

2 rules. About 0 are common, 2 are distinctive, and 0 are very specific to this project.

    Distinctive · estimate

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 308,232 skill files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

PostgreSQL code authoring

Inspect the target PostgreSQL version, schema, migration tool, existing SQL, and access pattern before drafting. Preserve repository conventions; do not invent table, column, index, or constraint names.

Construction contract

  • Parameterize runtime values; never concatenate user or variable data into SQL text.
  • Write the smallest result shape needed: explicit columns, deterministic ordering where order matters, and pagination suited to the access pattern. Use keyset pagination for deep traversal when the existing contract permits it.
  • Model integrity in DDL with the appropriate primary key, NOT NULL, UNIQUE, CHECK, and foreign-key constraints. Match column types, defaults, and nullability to the actual domain contract.
  • For a migration, prefer compatible staged changes. State lock/transaction constraints, data backfill plan, rollback path, and verification for destructive, large-table, type, or constraint changes.
  • Propose indexes from an observed query predicate/join/order pattern and verify performance with EXPLAIN or EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS) where safe. Never claim a query is faster without evidence.
  • Author only; do not execute data or schema changes without separate authorization.

Read query construction for query work and migration construction for DDL or migrations. The installed postgres-query-review, postgres-schema-design, and postgres-risk-check dependencies provide the shared review rationale; use them as construction constraints, not as a request to write a review.

Deliverable

Return the SQL or migration, stated assumptions, verification commands/tests, and rollback/operational notes when applicable.

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
