docker-compose

Use when a change must run against the repo's own Compose project (service won't start, ports, volumes). Reuse `docker compose -p <project>`. Test selection -> layered-testing-executor.
We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent
6 rules. 0 are common, 1 is distinctive, and 5 are very specific to this project.
0
Common
Most of the 8 edited versions we read keep these.
1
Distinctive
This author's own choices. Worth a look.
5
Very specific
Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.
- Common
- Distinctive
- Very specific
- Very specific: line 30
Look before you create: Run docker compose ps (and docker compose ps -a for stopped containers).
- Very specific: line 33
Only a missing service is started, with docker compose up -d <service>, without --force-recreate, and --build only when the image inputs …
- Very specific: line 35
One-offs: use docker compose run --rm <service> <cmd> in the SAME project, so nothing is left behind.
- Very specific: line 37
Cleanup: stop and remove only what you created (run --rm does it for one-offs).
- Distinctive: line 39
Read the canonical Compose files, wrappers, project identity, profiles, env-file order and runner.
- Very specific: line 45
Start from assets/docker-compose.base.yml when the project has no stack yet.
“Common” is measured: kept by at least 6 in 10 of the 8 edited versions of this file we could read. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.
Files
Use the project's existing Compose workflow
Reuse, don't recreate
- One Compose project per repo. Everything the agent needs — dependencies, test runners, one-off tools — runs inside the repo's own
compose.yaml/docker-compose.ymland project name. Never a loosedocker run, never a second-p <name>, never a parallel compose file for the same stack, unless the repo already declares it as an override that the base file merges. - Look before you create. Run
docker compose ps(anddocker compose ps -afor stopped containers).- A running service is reused with
docker compose exec <service> <cmd>. - A stopped one is restarted with
docker compose start <service>. - Only a missing service is started, with
docker compose up -d <service>, without--force-recreate, and--buildonly when the image inputs changed. - Recreate only a service you own whose inputs (image, build context, config) changed, with
docker compose up -d --build <service>, keeping its volumes; never recreate or duplicate a service that is merely running, nor one another writer owns.
- A running service is reused with
- One-offs: use
docker compose run --rm <service> <cmd>in the SAME project, so nothing is left behind. For a long test step, give the command its own deadline (for exampletimeout <s> pytest …) shorter than any outer lock wall, so the container dies with it. - A tool the stack lacks becomes a service in the repo's compose (with a profile such as
profiles: [tools]when it should not start by default), never an ad-hocdocker run. - Cleanup: stop and remove only what you created (
run --rmdoes it for one-offs). Neverdocker compose down -vordocker system pruneon a shared stack. Checkdocker system dfbefore adding images or volumes.
Read the canonical Compose files, wrappers, project identity, profiles, env-file order and runner. Files may live outside the root; absence of a root file does not prove no Compose workflow exists.
Verify the code actually running
Check the image, mount or watch synchronization relevant to the test. A green run on an old copied source tree is not evidence for the new diff. Health checks demonstrate their readiness contract, not that a feature works. For configuration edits, validate the effective selected configuration without exposing secrets. Honor machine resource admission and locks. Orphan removal is not taking the whole stack down, and none of this implies a Docker install, daemon change or global prune.
Start from assets/docker-compose.base.yml when the project has no stack yet. A setting outside the stack (env var, port, flag) keeps one versioned home with what, why and rollback recorded; when the failure is the Windows shell around Docker, use windows-shell-interop.
Reference files
Read references/buildkit-multistage-cache.md when hardening a Dockerfile with multi-stage builds and BuildKit cache mounts. Read references/dev/DOCKER_COMPOSE_DEV_WINDOWS.md when the dev loop runs through Docker Desktop's WSL2 backend on Windows. Read references/production/COMPOSE_HARDENING_CHECKLIST.md before shipping a production Compose stack. Read references/freshness-sources.md when a Compose, BuildKit or base-image fact in this skill needs a current primary source.

How matches are found. Word for word: the exact same text. Edited: shares passages with this file (“99% same” means 99% of its five-word phrases also appear here; 10% or more counts). Their own version: similar meaning, or, weakest, the same name. We can’t tell which project had it first. Projects are counted among the 200 most-starred candidates, and mentions are links to the repository we found, up to 50 per site, so both counts are a floor.

Does it work?
Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.
No reviews yet
People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.
- It worked
- Partly
- It didn't
Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.
Your trail
Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.
Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.
Now do this for your own.
Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
