diagnosing-bugs

Skill23 starsChanged 8 days agoApache-2.0View on GitHub

Use to reproduce a bug from evidence, or a failing test whose code may be wrong, and isolate one cause before changing code. Not proving a seam is wired -> layered-testing-executor.

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

1 rule. 0 are common, 0 are distinctive, and 1 is very specific to this project.

  • 0

    Common

Most of the 177 edited versions we read keep these.

  • 0

    Distinctive

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 1

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  1. Very specific:

When the cause is already established and the fix needs its failing test first, use tdd.

“Common” is measured: kept by at least 6 in 10 of the 177 edited versions of this file we could read. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Diagnose by discriminating evidence

Read the actual error, reported scenario and affected revision/configuration. Inspect relevant logs without exposing secrets or personal data. Reduce the symptom to a small repeatable check on the boundary that can reproduce it. A health check or import failure is not a reproduction of a wrong business result.

Form a hypothesis with a predicted observation. Choose the next inspection or experiment that distinguishes plausible causes; do not change several unrelated things or rerun the same failing command without changing the hypothesis. Use a controlled schedule for a suspected race and representative measurement for a performance defect, rather than arbitrary sleeps or speculative optimization.

Useful regression

When the defect is reproducible, strengthen the existing behavioral test that should have caught it and verify that it fails for the defect and passes after correction. Add a new test only when no existing test can be made sensitive to it: a regression test without a genuine gap in behavior coverage is noise. Avoid duplicating the same assertion across unit, service and browser layers unless each exposes a distinct failure boundary. Read references/LOOP_TAXONOMY.md when choosing or constructing the reproduction's pass/fail signal; its last-resort loop is scripts/hitl_loop_template.py (copy it, edit run(), the human follows the terminal prompts).

If reproduction is unavailable, continue useful permitted static investigation and report the limit. Static reasoning can demonstrate some defects, but it does not demonstrate runtime recovery. Do not manufacture a failing test unrelated to the symptom or claim a runtime fix from a plausible patch alone.

After the correction, check the original scenario and directly related risk, then run applicable project gates. Search for siblings only when the same causal mechanism plausibly applies. Remove owned temporary instrumentation; retain the regression and a brief explanation in the current work item. Do not turn every bug into a whole-repository audit.

When the cause is already established and the fix needs its failing test first, use tdd; for a Windows-only path, quoting or encoding failure, use windows-shell-interop.

How matches are found. Word for word: the exact same text. Edited: shares passages with this file (“99% same” means 99% of its five-word phrases also appear here; 10% or more counts). Their own version: similar meaning, or, weakest, the same name. We can’t tell which project had it first. Projects are counted among the 200 most-starred candidates, and mentions are links to the repository we found, up to 50 per site, so both counts are a floor.

      setup-ts-deep-modules

Wire dependency-cruiser into a TypeScript repo so each package is a deep module — implementation hidden in subfolders, reachable only through its entry-point files. User-invoked.

      writing-beats

Shape an article as a journey of beats, choose-your-own-adventure style. The user picks a starting beat from the raw material, you write only that beat, then offer options for where to pivot next, beat by beat, until the article reaches a natural end. Use when the user has raw material and wants to assemble it as a narrative rather than an argument.

Generate an interactive bash wizard that walks a human through steps only they can perform. Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
