seo-backlinks

Skill4 starsChanged 8 months agoMITView on GitHub

Backlink profile analysis, competitor link gap discovery, outreach strategy generation, internal link optimization, and link quality scoring. Use when user says "backlinks", "link building", "outreach", "DR", "domain rating", "referring domains", "anchor text", "link gap", "internal links".

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

2 rules. 0 are common, 2 are distinctive, and 0 are very specific to this project.

  • 0

    Common

Most of the 20 edited versions we read keep these.

  • 2

    Distinctive

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 0

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  • Common
  • Distinctive
  • Very specific
  1. Distinctive:

Use descriptive anchor text (not "click here")

    line 140
  2. Distinctive:

Create topic clusters: pillar page ↔ cluster pages with bidirectional links

    line 142

“Common” is measured: kept by at least 6 in 10 of the 20 edited versions of this file we could read. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Competitor Backlink Discovery

Inspired by automated competitor backlink monitoring workflows.

Discovery Process

  1. Identify competitors — 3-5 direct competitors + 2-3 aspirational
  2. Fetch new backlinks — Weekly lookback window via Backlinks API
  3. Quality filter — Apply minimum thresholds:
    • DR ≥ 30 (adjustable by industry)
    • Organic traffic ≥ 500/month
    • Relevance score: same industry/topic
    • Exclude known PBNs, link farms, directories
  4. Gap analysis — Identify domains linking to competitors but not you
  5. Prioritize — Rank by: authority × relevance × acquisition feasibility

Competitor Backlink Matrix

              | Your Site | Comp A | Comp B | Comp C |
|-------------|-----------|--------|--------|--------|
| Total Refs | 450 | 1200 | 800 | 600 |

Common Referring Domains

Domains linking to 2+ competitors but not you = highest priority prospects.

Outreach Email Template Structure

  1. Subject line — Personalized, reference their content
  2. Opening — Specific compliment about their work (not generic)
  3. Value proposition — What's in it for them
  4. The ask — Clear, specific, low-friction
  5. Social proof — Brief credibility signal

Follow-up Cadence

InitialDay 0Full pitch with value prop
Follow-up 1Day 5Brief reminder, add new angle
Follow-up 2Day 10Different value proposition
Follow-up 3Day 21Final attempt, FOMO or new hook

Prioritization Formula

Priority Score = (DR / 100) × Relevance × (1 / Difficulty)

Where: Relevance = 0-1 topic match, Difficulty = 1(easy) to 5(hard)

Link Quality Scoring

Single Link Quality Score (0-100)

FactorWeightScoring
Source DR/DA30%DR 0-100 mapped directly
Topical relevance25%0=unrelated, 50=adjacent, 100=exact
Link placement20%Editorial/body=100, sidebar=40, footer=20
Source traffic15%Log scale: 0=no traffic, 100=10K+
Dofollow status10%Dofollow=100, Nofollow=50, Sponsored=25

Toxic Link Indicators

  • Gambling, adult, pharma sites linking without context
  • PBN patterns (same IP range, thin content, reciprocal networks)
  • Paid link networks (footer-wide, sidebar widgets)
  • Redirect chains (301 → 301 → target)
  • Foreign language sites with no topical relevance

Internal Link Analysis

Orphan Page Detection

Pages with zero internal links pointing to them — invisible to crawlers navigating via links.

Link Depth Analysis

DepthDescriptionSEO Impact
1 clickLinked from homepageHighest crawl priority
2 clicksLinked from main nav pagesGood visibility
3 clicksLinked from category/section pagesModerate
4+ clicksDeep in site hierarchyLow — may be under-crawled

Internal Link Optimization

  • Important pages should have 5+ internal links pointing to them
  • Use descriptive anchor text (not "click here")
  • Distribute PageRank from high-authority pages to target pages
  • Create topic clusters: pillar page ↔ cluster pages with bidirectional links

How matches are found. Word for word: the exact same text. Edited: shares passages with this file (“99% same” means 99% of its five-word phrases also appear here; 10% or more counts). Their own version: similar meaning, or, weakest, the same name. We can’t tell which project had it first. Projects are counted among the 200 most-starred candidates, and mentions are links to the repository we found, up to 50 per site, so both counts are a floor.

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
