We split this AGENTS.md into the rules it gives an agent
7 rules. About 0 are common, 5 are distinctive, and 2 are very specific to this project.

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

Update rules.yaml metadata (type, description, version, scope).
≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 36,368 AGENTS.md files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

AGENTS — Rules Directory
This document tells AI agents how to discover, interpret, and enforce rules defined in this directory.
Discovery
When entering any project or manuscript context, check for a rules/ sibling
or parent directory. Load rules.yaml from the most-specific matching
rule set first, then fall back to broader scopes.
rules/<project-slug>/rules.yaml # most specific
rules/templates/<template>/rules.yaml # fallback exemplarInterpreting Rule Kinds
Soft rules (soft/)
- Treat as guidelines and preferences.
- Apply judgment: follow the spirit, not the letter.
- When generating text, code, or reviews, surface any deviation as a suggestion, not a blocker.
Strong rules (strong/)
- Treat as hard constraints.
- Validate them before marking a task complete.
- If a strong rule is violated, stop and report the violation with the path of the offending file and the constraint that was broken.
- Do not silently skip strong-rule checks.
Enforcement Workflow
- Load
rules.yaml→ identifyrule_kindspresent. - For each
strong/schema, run the described validation. - For each
soft/guideline, apply as a prompt constraint during generation. - Report results: pass / warn / fail per rule.
Adding New Rules
- Copy the appropriate template from
rules/templates/. - Update
rules.yamlmetadata (type, description, version, scope). - Edit soft guidelines in
soft/. - Edit strong schemas in
strong/. - Bump
versionif any strong constraint changes.

Where files are headingNew AGENTS.md files have more rules about keeping secrets out of the code, and fewer about code style.
Of the AGENTS.md files we read, the 28,693 first seen in the last six months, against the older ones: the kind of rule that gained most share, and the kind that lost most. About files like this in general, not this one, and an estimate, since a kind is a pattern in the words.

Does it work?
Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

Your trail
Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.
Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.
Now do this for your own.
Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
