Perform Jira and Confluence operations using the Atlassian CLI (acli). Use for issues, sprints, boards, pages, spaces, and project management.

  • Installs packages

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

6 rules. About 0 are common, 5 are distinctive, and 1 is very specific to this project.

  • ≈0

    Common · estimate

Many files like this have a rule of this kind.

  • ≈5

    Distinctive · estimate

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 1

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  • Common

  • Very specific
  1. Very specific:

Use the instance and rules below when constructing all acli commands.

    line 8
  2. Distinctive:

If not already set up, inform the user that setup is required and ask them to complete the following steps manually.

    line 22
  3. Distinctive:

NEVER run delete commands without explicit user instruction — deletions in Jira and Confluence are irreversible.

    line 87
  4. Distinctive:

When constructing JQL or CQL queries, prefer explicit field filters over free-text search to avoid unintended broad matches.

    line 88
  5. Distinctive:

If a project key, space key, board ID, or issue key looks unfamiliar, stop and ask the user to confirm before proceeding.

    line 89
  6. Distinctive:

NEVER read, display, or store the Atlassian API token — it is a credential and must remain secret.

    line 90

≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 308,232 skill files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Jira and Confluence CLI Skill

Use the instance and rules below when constructing all acli commands.

Configuration

Set your Atlassian site URL before using this skill:

SettingValue
Atlassian Site<your-site>.atlassian.net

Replace <your-site>.atlassian.net with your actual Atlassian site domain throughout this skill.

Prerequisites (one-time setup by user)

If not already set up, inform the user that setup is required and ask them to complete the following steps manually. Do not perform these steps yourself.

  1. Install the Atlassian CLI if not already installed:
brew tap atlassian/homebrew-acli
brew install acli
  1. Authenticate with your Atlassian instance:
acli auth login

This opens a browser window at https://api.atlassian.com/oauth2/authorize/.... Click Accept to grant the Atlassian CLI the required OAuth scopes. Once authorized, return to the terminal and select your site from the list when prompted.

Command Structure

acli jira workitem # create, get, list, update, transition
acli jira board # list, get
acli jira sprint # list, get
acli confluence page # create, get, list, update

Common Commands

Create a work item

acli jira workitem create \
  --project "PROJECT_KEY" \
  --type "Story" \
  --summary "Summary here" \
  --description-file /path/to/description.txt

For multi-line descriptions always use --description-file pointing to a temp file — inline --description with newlines is error-prone.

List work items (JQL)

acli jira workitem list --jql "project = ABC AND status != Done" --limit 100

Get a work item

acli jira workitem get --id ABC-1234

Transition a work item

acli jira workitem transition --id ABC-1234 --status "In Progress"

Create a Confluence page

acli confluence page create \
  --space "SPACE_KEY" \
  --title "Page Title" \
  --content-file /path/to/content.txt

Rules

  • For list commands, always pass --limit 100 to ensure complete results are returned (--paginate is not supported by acli).
  • NEVER run delete commands without explicit user instruction — deletions in Jira and Confluence are irreversible.
  • When constructing JQL or CQL queries, prefer explicit field filters over free-text search to avoid unintended broad matches.
  • If a project key, space key, board ID, or issue key looks unfamiliar, stop and ask the user to confirm before proceeding.
  • NEVER read, display, or store the Atlassian API token — it is a credential and must remain secret.

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
