dependency-change

Skill1 starsChanged 2 months agoApache-2.0View on GitHub

Evaluates dependency additions, removals, and upgrades for necessity, maintenance, security, licensing, compatibility, operational impact, and rollback. Use when changing third-party packages, libraries, modules, plugins, runtimes, or external components.

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

5 rules. About 0 are common, 5 are distinctive, and 0 are very specific to this project.

  • ≈0

    Common · estimate

Many files like this have a rule of this kind.

  • ≈5

    Distinctive · estimate

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 0

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  • Common
  • Distinctive
  • Very specific
  1. Distinctive:

Prefer the smallest dependency surface and narrowest reasonable integration that solves the problem.

    line 18
  2. Distinctive:

Keep the implementation change separate from unrelated dependency cleanup so regressions and rollback remain understandable.

    line 22
  3. Distinctive:

Run the affected build, tests, static checks, packaging, startup, or integration validation appropriate to the project.

    line 24
  4. Distinctive:

Document durable architectural, security, licensing, or operational consequences when future maintainers need to know them.

    line 28
  5. Distinctive:

Do not introduce a dependency merely to avoid a small amount of straightforward, maintainable local code.

≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 308,232 skill files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Dependency change

  1. Define the capability or problem that motivates the dependency change and confirm whether existing platform, standard-library, or project capabilities already solve it adequately.
  2. Identify the exact dependency, source, maintained version line, intended scope, and any replacement or removal implications.
  3. Evaluate maintenance status, release activity, security posture, licensing, ecosystem fit, platform support, runtime or bundle impact, and compatibility with the project's supported environments and consumers.
  4. Inspect important transitive dependencies, native or system requirements, generated artifacts, lockfile changes, and operational prerequisites introduced or removed by the change.
  5. Prefer the smallest dependency surface and narrowest reasonable integration that solves the problem. Avoid overlapping dependencies for the same concern without explicit justification.
  6. For upgrades or replacements, review release notes, migration guidance, breaking changes, deprecations, configuration changes, data-format implications, and minimum supported runtime requirements.
  7. Keep the implementation change separate from unrelated dependency cleanup so regressions and rollback remain understandable.
  8. Run the affected build, tests, static checks, packaging, startup, or integration validation appropriate to the project.
  9. Define a practical rollback or recovery path when the dependency change can affect compatibility, persistent data, deployment, or runtime operation.
  10. Document durable architectural, security, licensing, or operational consequences when future maintainers need to know them.

Do not introduce a dependency merely to avoid a small amount of straightforward, maintainable local code.

Report the dependency decision, alternatives considered when relevant, compatibility and security findings, validation evidence, and residual operational risk.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
