compatibility-and-rollout

Skill1 starsChanged 2 months agoApache-2.0View on GitHub

Plans and validates changes where old and new versions, schemas, protocols, data formats, clients, or services may coexist. Use for migrations, staged activation, backward compatibility, mixed-version operation, rollback, or deprecation.

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

2 rules. About 0 are common, 2 are distinctive, and 0 are very specific to this project.

Many files like this have a rule of this kind.

≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 308,232 skill files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Compatibility and rollout

  1. Identify the affected contracts, producers, consumers, persisted formats, supported versions, external dependencies, and compatibility guarantees.
  2. Determine which old and new components or data representations may coexist during the transition.
  3. Prefer additive evolution, tolerant readers or writers, and reversible changes when they reduce compatibility risk.
  4. Separate introducing a capability from activating or depending on it when independent activation, configuration, feature control, or gradual rollout provides a safer transition.
  5. For data or schema evolution, use an expand → migrate or backfill → switch → contract sequence when practical. Do not remove the old path before the compatibility requirement has actually ended.
  6. Define the rollout order, readiness criteria, observation signals, failure conditions, rollback or recovery path, and point of no return before consequential activation.
  7. Validate representative old and new consumers, producers, data, and protocol paths. Include mixed-version behavior when coexistence is possible.
  8. Make assumptions about compatibility windows, minimum supported versions, or migration completion explicit rather than inferring them.
  9. Remove compatibility scaffolding only after evidence shows that remaining consumers or data no longer require it and the removal is separately reviewed.

Report the compatibility boundaries, coexistence assumptions, rollout sequence, validation evidence, activation criteria, and rollback or recovery path.

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
