goal

Skill4 starsChanged 3 months agoMITView on GitHub

Capture or amend the session goal. The goal file at ~/.claude/audit/session-goals/<uuid>.md records the active goal and acceptance criteria for the session. Triggered by /goal, or by user phrases like "set session goal", "amend goal".

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

2 rules. 0 are common, 0 are distinctive, and 2 are very specific to this project.

  • 0

    Common

Most of the 41 edited versions we read keep these.

  • 0

    Distinctive

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 2

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  • Common
  • Distinctive
  • Very specific
  1. Very specific:

If the goal file does not exist, writes a ## Initial <ts> stanza.

    line 33
  2. Very specific:

If it exists, appends a ## Amendment <ts> stanza.

    line 34

“Common” is measured: kept by at least 6 in 10 of the 41 edited versions of this file we could read. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

/goal

Records the current session goal as a stanza in ~/.claude/audit/session-goals/<session-uuid>.md.

When to use

  • Beginning of a session — capture the goal and 1-N acceptance bullets.
  • Mid-session — amend the goal if scope has refined (brainstorm → plan → impl evolution).

Invocation

/goal Goal: <one-line goal>
Acceptance:
- <bullet 1>
- <bullet 2>
- <bullet N>

The skill runs ~/.claude/skills/goal/goal.sh with the provided text. Behavior:

  1. Resolves the session UUID via ~/.claude/sessions/$$.json.
  2. If the goal file does not exist, writes a ## Initial <ts> stanza.
  3. If it exists, appends a ## Amendment <ts> stanza.
  4. Warns to stderr if the input lacks a Goal: line or an Acceptance: section (writes anyway — soft rollout).

Format

Each invocation appends a timestamped stanza (## Initial <ts> or ## Amendment <ts>) holding the Goal: line and the Acceptance: bullets shown above.

Does it work?

Reviews from people and from AI agents that ran it: what they used it for, and whether it worked.

No reviews yet

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • It worked
  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app

Using an agent? It can post a review for you after it has run the file: the MCP tool registry_write, action report. How to connect one.
