profiling-slow-api-endpoints

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/profiling-slow-api-endpoints/SKILL.md

Profiles slow PostHog API endpoints when the main cost is in Postgres or Python. Use when a screen, picker, or list is slow; a Django endpoint has high tail latency; a query plan changes with tenant size; or a proposed database fix needs production evidence. Covers APM traces, safe production EXPLAIN, representative measurements, implementation choices, tests, rollout, and post-deploy verification. For ClickHouse or HogQL latency, use `optimizing-clickhouse-and-hogql-queries` instead.

PostHogSkill

qa-frontend

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/qa-frontend/SKILL.md

Internal PostHog developer frontend/browser QA skill. Use only when a PostHog developer explicitly asks to run frontend QA, browser-test a PR, verify a UI flow against the local PostHog stack, use qa-frontend, or QA current frontend changes with browser/runtime evidence. Do not use for generic code review, PR review, "check my changes", CI debugging, or security audit; use qa-team, debugging-ci-failures, or security-audit instead. Runs in PR mode or local mode, plans adaptive browser and visual checks, drives browser MCP/tooling such as Playwright MCP or Chrome DevTools MCP, captures evidence, and applies only approved/narrow fixes.

querying-production-databases-via-metabase

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/querying-production-databases-via-metabase/SKILL.md

Runs read-only production database analysis through PostHog's internal Metabase instances. Use for ClickHouse query logs, slow query cost, Postgres query plans, index selection, or tenant-size analysis. Covers US and EU database discovery, SSO login through `hogli`, safe query rules, and query patterns for both engines.

querying-tophog

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/querying-tophog/SKILL.md

Query tophog — the ingestion pipeline's heavy-hitter store in ClickHouse — to identify hot or expensive actors (team_id, distinct_id, session_id, partition) during incident triage. Use when investigating ingestion lag, a hot or lagging Kafka partition, expensive person processing, merge storms, or any "which team or distinct_id is causing this" question. Covers the internal Metabase access path (SSO via hogli), the tophog schema, and the cost-vs-volume query lens. Internal-only: results contain cross-customer identifiers.

reviewing-personhog-protocol

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/reviewing-personhog-protocol/SKILL.md

The full review process for personhog coordination-protocol changes — leases, fencing, handoffs, supervisors, failure budgets, warming, and changelog semantics. Use before pushing or requesting review on any personhog protocol changeset, when asked for an exhaustive or careful review of personhog code, and after any reviewer finds a gap the author missed. Covers the adversarial two-pass process, the review lens dimensions, the model-checking and test layers a change must clear, and the red-check-every-fix discipline.

reviewing-with-coderabbit

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/reviewing-with-coderabbit/SKILL.md

Run a CodeRabbit review over the branch from the terminal, with the `coderabbit` CLI, and record the pass in the PR description. Before `gh pr create` or a requested branch review, first check `POSTHOG_TASK_RUN_ID` and `CI`: a cloud or CI task skips this skill without a CLI probe or user message. Otherwise, use this skill to check `cr` and its authentication, and offer setup or skip when a person can answer. Run the review once per branch. Never substitute an agent review. Trigger terms: coderabbit, cr review, local review, self-review, review my branch, pre-PR review.

routing-outbound-api-calls

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/routing-outbound-api-calls/SKILL.md

Use before adding or changing Python code that calls a third-party HTTP API from PostHog (a vendor REST call, a vendor SDK client, a scraping or enrichment service), and before adding or changing a domain under posthog/egress/: its budget, priority lanes, identity, metrics, or rate-limit headers. Routes the call to an existing egress domain, a new gated domain, a record-only domain, or no domain at all, names the reference domain to copy, and lists the tests that catch a missing priority reserve. Trigger terms: egress, outbound API, third-party API, vendor client, rate limit, 429, Retry-After, budget, priority lane, BATCH, reserve, EgressClient, RecordedEgressClient, github_request.

running-ci-preflight

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/running-ci-preflight/SKILL.md

Catch the deterministic CI failures reachable from your diff before pushing, with `hogli ci:preflight`. Use when the pre-push hook blocks a push, before reporting a task done, or after editing Python, serializers, migrations, workflows, or dependency manifests — to avoid burning a CI matrix on a failure you could catch locally (formatting, lint, broken lockfiles, OpenAPI drift, migration conflict, stale branch). Trigger terms: ci:preflight, preflight, pre-push checks, pre-push hook failed, "will this break CI".

scene-menu-bar

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/scene-menu-bar/SKILL.md

Conventions for adding or editing the SceneMenuBar above a scene's <SceneTitleSection>. Use when adding new menu items, moving items between menus, gating behind feature flags, building a new scene's menubar, or wiring rich inputs (tags, combobox) into the bar.

sending-notifications

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/sending-notifications/SKILL.md

How to send real-time in-app notifications from PostHog backend code. Use when integrating notifications into a new feature, wiring up a notification source (alerts, comments, approvals, pipelines, issues), or choosing the right target type and priority for a notification.

setting-feature-flags-in-storybook

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/setting-feature-flags-in-storybook/SKILL.md

Use when writing a Storybook story for a component gated on a feature flag — boolean flags or multivariate/experiment-arm variants. Covers the `featureFlags` story parameter and why imperatively setting flags renders the flag-off branch in visual-regression snapshots while passing in jest.

splitting-oversized-modules

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/splitting-oversized-modules/SKILL.md

Split an oversized Python module (a thousand-plus-line logic.py, models.py, api.py, or its test file) into a package of one module per concern, mechanically and provably without changing behavior. Use on a request to split / break up / decompose a god module or move functions out of one, once a human has agreed to split one before some other change, or before restructuring code inside a module already over roughly a thousand lines — breaking up a long function or extracting helpers in place leaves everything in the same file, so check the worth-it gate and propose the split first. Covers that gate, assigning symbols to concerns with an acyclic dependency graph, the AST plus tokenize move script, and proving the result is a pure move. Python only — for frontend files use writing-ui-components. Not for extracting a shared helper into common/, and not for moving code between products, which is isolating-product-facade-contracts.

stacking-prs

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/stacking-prs/SKILL.md

Create and manage GitHub native Stacked PRs in this repo with the `gh stack` CLI. Use when asked to stack PRs, split a large change into a stack, add a layer to a stack, restack or rebase a stack, adopt existing branches or PRs into a stack, check out someone else's stack, or land a stack. Covers creating and submitting stacks (draft-first), cascade rebases with `gh stack sync`, and landing one through the Trunk merge queue via `/merging-prs` — whole-stack via `/trunk merge` on the top layer, or bottom-first — never `gh stack merge`.

testing-mcp-tools-locally

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/testing-mcp-tools-locally/SKILL.md

Set up the local dev environment, seed data, and API keys to test the staff-only managed migrations MCP tools (managed-migrations-support-list, managed-migrations-support-get) end to end. Use when testing batch import support tooling, debugging MCP tool responses or discovery (tools not appearing), or verifying the support API before deploying. Covers the discovery gate: hidden scope, is_staff, user:read, and why wildcard keys and OAuth never work.

triaging-warehouse-sync-tickets

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/triaging-warehouse-sync-tickets/SKILL.md

Debug a customer's data warehouse source, schema, or table from a support ticket, using PostHog's own production data. Use when a ticket says a warehouse table is stale, empty, stuck, duplicated, missing rows, or failing to sync, and you need the real state of the sync rather than the customer's description. The customer is on a team your MCP session cannot reach, so every answer comes from execute-sql with a connectionId set to a direct-connect source over PostHog's live production databases, which hold all customers' data. Covers region detection (US vs EU), the Production Postgres connection (externaldatasource / externaldataschema / externaldatajob / datawarehousetable), the Production ClickHouse connection (log_entries, app_metrics2), cross-region access through posthog-connection-call, why the external-data-* product tools silently answer from your own project instead, and how to end with one recommended action plus who can run it. Internal only: every query returns another customer's data.

triaging-web-analytics-support

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/triaging-web-analytics-support/SKILL.md

Triage web analytics support tickets end to end: enumerate open tickets from the in-app conversations product and their Zendesk mirrors, classify each into a diagnostic shape (frontend crash, "two numbers don't match", traffic count drop, tracker not loading / undercounting vs a competitor, ad-platform integration error, channel type misclassification), run the matching playbook, and produce reply drafts plus fix PRs where warranted. Use when asked to triage the web analytics support channel, investigate a web analytics Zendesk or conversations ticket, or explain metric discrepancies a customer reported. Internal-only: queries cross-customer support and usage data; never copy customer names or their traffic numbers into public artifacts (PRs, issues, commits).

using-kea-disposables

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/using-kea-disposables/SKILL.md

Use when adding timers (`setInterval`, `setTimeout`), event listeners (`window.addEventListener`, `document.addEventListener`, `MediaQueryList.addEventListener`), or any other resource that needs cleanup inside a kea logic. Every logic has `cache.disposables.add(setup, key?, options?)` and `cache.disposables.dispose(key)` available via the globally registered `disposablesPlugin` from the `kea-disposables` package. Replaces the bare `cache.foo = setInterval(...)` + `beforeUnmount: clearInterval(cache.foo)` pattern and auto-pauses background work when the tab is hidden.

using-redis-token-buckets

PostHog/posthog/.agents/skills/using-redis-token-buckets/SKILL.md

Use when adding a bucket-like rate limit backed by Redis: a per-caller budget with burst capacity and continuous refill, a refund path for requests that did no work, or a limit whose Retry-After must be a real wait rather than a window edge. `posthog/token_bucket.py` provides an atomic Lua token bucket (`consume`, `refund`, `peek`) over `posthog.redis.get_client()`. Choose it over DRF `SimpleRateThrottle`/fixed-window cache counters when boundary bursts, top-of-window lockouts, or charge-then-refund semantics matter. Trigger terms: token bucket, rate limit, burst, refill, quota, Retry-After, fixed window, throttle.

CLAUDE.md vs AGENTS.md

About skills

What is a Claude skill?

A folder with a SKILL.md file: a name, a description of when to use it, and instructions. Claude loads a skill only when the task matches its description.

How do I use one I find here?

Copy the folder into your project's .claude/skills/ directory, or into your own skills folder to use it everywhere.

What do the warnings mean?

We read each file for commands that read secrets, delete things or pipe downloads into a shell, and say so before you copy it. No warning is not a promise that a file is safe.

Which skills worked for people?

Open a skill to see its discussion. Reports from people and their agents are coming.
