VideoLens combines transcription, frame-level vision, and OCR into a single cached pipeline, then writes an evidence-grounded report. The simplest entry point is YouTube; local files and roughly 1,500 supported video sites remain available. Detailed Report, Key Insights, Tutorial Guide, and Interview / Podcast are the primary report styles, with specialized modes for product and engineering work.

Key facts:

- **Availability:** Private BYOK mode and the MIT-licensed core are free forever. A signed-in account includes one managed starter report. VideoLens Pro is $12/month or $99/year and includes 20 managed reports per calendar month.
- **Privacy:** Private mode sends analysis content directly from Chrome or Firefox to OpenAI with the user's key; VideoLens does not receive it. Managed mode passes requested analysis content through VideoLens and Vercel AI Gateway to the configured AI provider (currently OpenAI). VideoLens does not retain raw media in its database, and completed reports are stored only when the user enables cloud saving. The extension has no analytics.
- **Sources supported:** Local files plus ~1,500 platforms via yt-dlp (YouTube, Loom, Vimeo, TikTok, Twitch, Twitter/X, Reddit, Google Drive, and more). Not supported: DRM-protected players (Netflix, Disney+) and live streams.
- **Pipeline:** resolve source → extract audio, frames, and OCR → build a time-windowed timeline → analyze against your prompt and mode → structured findings with timestamp citations. Every step is cached, so re-runs are cheap and follow-up questions cost cents.
- **Outputs:** Standalone professional HTML, print-quality PDF, Markdown, and JSON, plus follow-up Q&A over the cached timeline.
- **License:** MIT.

## Product surfaces

- Python CLI: prompt-directed local video analysis.
- Web UI: local upload and URL analysis interface.

- Chrome and Firefox extensions: side-panel analysis with free Private / BYOK and optional Pro / Managed modes.
- MCP server: exposes VideoLens as tools for AI agents such as Claude Code and Cursor.

## Report styles

- Detailed Report: comprehensive explanation of the video's main ideas, examples, context, caveats, and conclusions.
- Key Insights: removes repetition and filler while preserving the information worth remembering.
- Tutorial Guide: prerequisites, ordered steps, exact commands, warnings, and verification checks.
- Interview / Podcast: themes, claims, disagreements, notable quotes, and follow-up questions.

## Specialized analysis modes

- Bug: reproduction steps, failure mode, severity hint, and ticket-ready tasks.
- Meeting: decisions, objections, commitments, and follow-up actions.
- UX: user friction, repeated actions, pauses, and flow recommendations.
- Demo: feature inventory, positioning, and competitive opportunities.
- Content: hook, pacing, clarity, claims, proof, and call to action.
- Privacy: exposed secrets, credentials, PII, internal URLs, and redaction tasks.

## Structured extraction
- Make a Recipe: https://app.videolens.io/?workflow=recipe — ingredients and cooking steps with independent quantity, timing, and temperature evidence. Hosted extraction does not perform online recipe research.
- Make a Procedure: https://app.videolens.io/?workflow=procedure — software walkthroughs with prerequisites, exact settings, ordered actions, success checks, gaps, and checklists.
- Both hosted workflows support YouTube and local files, BYOK, and HTML/PDF/Markdown/JSON exports. Managed analysis and optional cloud saving are available through the browser extensions.

- Store listings are the source of truth for browser release versions; public website copy does not pin them.
