# resolume-mcp — Comprehensive Reference
## Overview
Resolume Arena VJ software control via Open Sound Control (OSC). This MCP server provides 6 tools for live video mixing, clip management, layer control, effects, and real-time performance orchestration.
## Architecture
```
Cursor/Claude Desktop --stdio--> Python MCP Server --OSC--> Resolume Arena
```
The server communicates with Resolume Arena over UDP OSC on ports 7000 (in) and 7001 (out). It requires Resolume Arena to be running on the same machine or network.
## Configuration
### Environment Variables
| Variable | Default | Description |
|----------|---------|-------------|
| RESOLUME_MCP_HOST | 127.0.0.1 | Host for the Starlette webapp backend |
| RESOLUME_MCP_PORT | 11140 | Port for the Starlette webapp backend |
| OSC_IN_PORT | 7000 | Port Resolume receives OSC on |
| OSC_OUT_PORT | 7001 | Port Resolume sends OSC on |
| RESOLUME_PATH | (none) | Path to Resolume Arena executable |
### Ports
| Port | Service | Notes |
|------|---------|-------|
| 11139 | Frontend (Vite dev) | Web dashboard |
| 11140 | Backend (Starlette) | REST + MCP HTTP |
| 7000 | OSC In | Resolume receives |
| 7001 | OSC Out | Resolume sends |
## Tool Reference
### help
Multilevel help system. Call with no arguments for the index, or pass a topic for specific guidance.
Parameters:
- topic (str, optional): Help section to retrieve
Returns: dict with success, message, help_text
### status
System diagnostics — checks Resolume connectivity, OSC health, registered tools, and server uptime.
Returns: dict with success, message, resolume_running, osc_connected, tool_count, uptime_seconds
### clip_control
Video clip loading, playback, and manipulation in Resolume compositions. Portmanteau tool with operation discriminator.
Operations:
- list: List clips in a layer or composition
- load: Load a clip from file
- play: Start clip playback
- stop: Stop clip playback
- solo: Solo a clip
- clear: Clear clip from layer
Parameters:
- operation (Literal): The operation to perform
- layer (int, optional): Target layer index
- clip (int, optional): Target clip index
- path (str, optional): File path for load operation
Returns: dict with success, message, data
### layer_control
Layer opacity, blending modes, and transitions.
Operations:
- list: List all layers
- opacity: Set layer opacity (0.0-1.0)
- blend: Set layer blend mode
- transition: Apply a transition
- clear: Clear a layer
Parameters:
- operation (Literal): The operation to perform
- layer (int): Target layer index
- value (float, optional): Opacity value
- mode (str, optional): Blend mode name
Returns: dict with success, message, data
### effect_control
Effect parameter control on clips and layers.
Operations:
- list: List available effects
- list_params: List parameters for a specific effect
- set: Set an effect parameter value
- toggle: Toggle effect on/off
Parameters:
- operation (Literal): The operation to perform
- layer (int, optional): Target layer
- clip (int, optional): Target clip
- effect (str, optional): Effect name
- param (str, optional): Parameter name
- value (float, optional): Parameter value
Returns: dict with success, message, data
### performance_control
BPM sync, batch operations, and performance-wide controls.
Operations:
- set_bpm: Set the global BPM
- tap_tempo: Trigger BPM tap tempo
- select_next_layer: Advance to the next layer
- select_previous_layer: Go to the previous layer
- toggle_fullscreen: Toggle fullscreen
- connect: Connect to Resolume by IP
Parameters:
- operation (Literal): The operation to perform
- bpm (float, optional): BPM value for set_bpm
- ip (str, optional): Resolume IP address for connect
Returns: dict with success, message, data
## OSC Protocol
The server sends OSC messages to Resolume Arena following the standard Resolume OSC API:
- `/composition/layers/{idx}/clips/{idx}/video/position` — clip position
- `/composition/layers/{idx}/opacity` — layer opacity
- `/composition/tempo` — BPM
- `/composition/connect` — connect to Resolume
## Troubleshooting
### Resolume Not Responding
1. Ensure Resolume Arena is running
2. Verify OSC settings in Resolume: Preferences > OSC > Enable OSC input
3. Check OSC_IN_PORT and OSC_OUT_PORT match Resolume's configuration
4. Test with a direct OSC monitor tool
### Connection Refused
1. Check no other process is using ports 11139-11140
2. Verify firewall rules allow localhost connections
3. Run `netstat -ano | findstr :11140` to check port occupancy
### Webapp Returns "Failed to fetch"
1. Verify backend is running on port 11140
2. Check CORS configuration allows the webapp origin (should include tauri://localhost)
3. In dev mode, ensure Vite proxy forwards /api requests to the backend
## Development
### Quick Start
```powershell
uv sync
uv run python -m resolume_mcp
```
### Webapp
```powershell
cd web_sota
npm install
npm run dev
```
The frontend runs on port 11139 and proxies /api requests to the backend on port 11140.
### Building NSIS Installer
```powershell
cd native
.\build.ps1
```
Output: `native/target/release/bundle/nsis/Resolume_MCP_0.1.0_x64-setup.exe`
### TypeScript Lint
```powershell
cd web_sota
npx tsc --noEmit
```
### Python Lint
```powershell
uv run ruff check src/
uv run ruff format src/ --check
```
## Transport
- Default: stdio (Claude Desktop, Cursor)
- Optional: HTTP on port 11140 when RESOLUME_MCP_PORT is set
## Dependencies
- Python 3.12+
- FastMCP >= 3.4.4
- python-osc (OSC communication)
- FastAPI + Uvicorn (webapp backend)
- React + Vite (webapp frontend)
