Use punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers to shortlist MCP servers by category, language, and scope before vetting one for connection; the catalog is not an audit, so verify maintenance, install method, license, and credentials yourself.

--- name: github-awesome-mcp-servers description: "Use punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers to shortlist MCP servers by category, language, and scope before vetting one for connection; the catalog is not an audit, so verify maintenance, install method, license, and credentials yourself." metadata: repository: "punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers" --- # Awesome MCP Servers Catalog This repository is a curated README catalog only; it ships no code, installers, or runtime. Read [source evidence](references/upstream.md) for the vetting boundary and license. ## Use the catalog as a shortlist - Entries are grouped by function (browser automation, databases, file systems, finance, monitoring, security, and more), with legend markers for language, local versus cloud scope, and OS support including Windows. - The legend marks official reference implementations; an unmarked entry is community-authored, which is not by itself a problem. - This list covers servers with a public repo you install and run yourself; the README points hosted-only servers to the sibling awesome-remote-mcp-servers list. - A web directory at glama.ai mirrors the catalog; badge scores there are popularity or quality signals, not security audits. - Check the linked repository's recent activity, releases, and open issues before adopting anything. ## Vet before connecting - Inclusion means someone submitted a pull request and it passed formatting review; the reviewed docs describe no security audit, so treat listed as unvetted. - Prefer a pinned package version or reviewed source over one-shot `npx -y` execution. - Identify what a server can touch: filesystem, shell, credentials, browser sessions, cloud APIs. Grant least privilege and scope configuration to the project that needs it. - Local servers execute with the user's permissions; a description claiming sandboxing is not evidence of it. - For discovery-only requests, return a shortlist with tradeoffs and ask before installing or configuring anything. Example: shortlist Windows-friendly database MCP servers and report each candidate's maintenance status before any server is connected.
