## Overview

claude-dotfiles provides a curated collection of CLAUDE.md templates, skills, hooks, rules, agents, commands, settings profiles, and MCP server configurations for Claude Code 2.1+. It also supports Claude Desktop, Cursor, and OpenAI Codex CLI.

## Installation

```bash
git clone https://github.com/peopleforrester/claude-dotfiles.git
cd claude-dotfiles
./install.sh --all
```

The installer copies selected components to `~/.claude/` (global) or `.claude/` (project-level).

## Components

### Templates (templates/)
Starter CLAUDE.md files at three complexity levels:
- minimal/ — Bare essentials (~30 lines)
- standard/ — Recommended baseline (~80 lines)
- power-user/ — Full featured (~100 lines)

### CLAUDE.md Templates (claude-md/)
Language and framework-specific CLAUDE.md templates:
- Languages: TypeScript, Python, Go, Rust
- Frameworks: React/Next.js, FastAPI, Django, Spring Boot
- Domains: Data science, DevOps

### Skills (skills/)
SKILL.md workflow definitions with YAML frontmatter:
- development/ — Code generation, backend patterns, testing patterns
- documentation/ — ADR generation, changelog automation
- git/ — Commit crafting, PR descriptions
- quality/ — Code review, security scanning
- optimization/ — Learning, context management, verification
- patterns/ — Language-specific patterns (TypeScript, Python, Go, Rust)
- frameworks/ — Framework patterns (React, Next.js, FastAPI, Django, Spring Boot)

### Rules (rules/)
Always-follow constraint files:
- common/ — Security, coding style, testing, git workflow, performance, agents
- typescript/ — TS-specific coding style, testing, security, hooks, patterns
- python/ — Python-specific coding style, testing, security, hooks, patterns
- golang/ — Go-specific coding style, testing, security, hooks, patterns

### Agents (agents/)
Specialized persona definitions:
- planner, architect — Design and planning
- code-reviewer, security-reviewer — Read-only review agents

- build-resolver, go-build-resolver — Build error diagnosis
- e2e-runner — Playwright E2E testing
- database-reviewer, python-reviewer, go-reviewer — Specialized reviewers
- doc-updater, refactor-cleaner — Maintenance agents

### User-Invocable Skills (skills/)
The legacy commands/ directory was merged into skills/ in 0.5.0. Slash commands
are now skills with `user-invocable: true` in their frontmatter, organized by
category (workflow/, quality/, maintenance/, learning/, git/, docs/).

### Hooks (hooks/)
Event-driven automation:
- formatters/ — Prettier, Black, gofmt auto-formatting
- validators/ — Lint checks, sensitive file protection
- notifications/ — Desktop notifications on completion

### Settings (settings/)
settings.json permission profiles:
- sandbox-on — defaultMode: auto inside an isolated bash sandbox
- sandbox-off — acceptEdits with no isolation, bash always asks
- autoMode-strict — defaultMode: auto, escalate writes/edits/bash/network
- autoMode-permissive — defaultMode: auto, allow routine work, escalate destructive ops

### MCP Servers (mcp/)
Model Context Protocol configurations for GitHub, Slack, Notion, PostgreSQL, and more.

### Contexts (contexts/)
Dynamic mode switching:
- dev.md — Active development mode
- review.md — Code review mode (read-only focus)
- research.md — Exploration and investigation mode

## File Format Conventions

- CLAUDE.md: Header comment with token count, sections for Stack/Commands/Directories/Gotchas
- SKILL.md: YAML frontmatter with name (64 char max) and description (1024 char max)
- Agents: YAML frontmatter with name, description, tools list, model specification
- Commands: YAML frontmatter with description field
- Rules: Markdown with Always/Never sections for enforcement

## Key Paths

- ~/.claude/ — Global configuration directory
- ~/.claude/skills/ — Global skills
- ~/.claude/rules/ — Global rules
- .claude/ — Project-level configuration
- .claude/skills/ — Project skills
- CLAUDE.md — Project instructions (read on every message)

## Validation

```bash
python3 scripts/validate.py .       # Validate all configs
node tests/run-all.js               # Run test suite
node scripts/ci/validate-all.js     # CI validators
