# VoxelPic

## Purpose

VoxelPic is a C library (with Python bindings) that transcodes 3D colored point
clouds to and from 2D RGB images. It works by building an OcTree from a point
cloud, rendering the OcTree from four orthographic views, and encoding voxel
color and depth into image pixels. Depth is encoded as color using a modified
version of the hue-codec scheme (limiting to 1273 central values for robustness
to h.264 compression artifacts). Decoding reverses this process, reconstructing
voxel centroids and colors from the image. Interior voxels occluded from all
four views are lost during encoding.

## Build System

The project uses CMake (minimum 3.15) with C11. The version is read from the
`VERSION` file at the project root.

### CMake Presets (CMakePresets.json)

| Preset          | Generator | Compiler | Tests | Tools |
|-----------------|-----------|----------|-------|-------|
| debug           | default   | default  | ON    | OFF   |
| debug-clang     | Ninja     | clang    | ON    | OFF   |
| release         | default   | default  | ON    | ON    |
| release-clang   | Ninja     | clang    | ON    | ON    |

### CMake Options

- `VOXELPIC_BUILD_TESTS` — build C test executables (default OFF)
- `VOXELPIC_BUILD_TOOLS` — build the `vpic` CLI tool (default OFF)
- `VOXELPIC_BUILD_SHARED` — build a shared library in addition to static (default OFF)
- `VOXELPIC_SANITIZE` — sanitizer flag, e.g. `address` (default empty)

### Typical Build

```sh
cmake -B build --preset release
cmake --build build
ctest --test-dir build
```

### Dependencies (fetched automatically via FetchContent)

- **cargs** (v1.2.0) — CLI argument parsing for the `vpic` tool
- **libpng** (optional) — PNG I/O for the `vpic` tool; detected via `find_package`

### Code Formatting

`clang-format-18` is used. A `voxelpic_format` CMake target applies formatting
to all `.c` and `.h` files in `src/`, `test/`, and `include/`.

## Python Package

Installable via `pip install -e .[test]`. Defined in `pyproject.toml` and
`setup.py`. The C extension `_voxelpic` is built from `src/voxelpicpy.c` and
`src/voxelpic.c`, linked against NumPy headers.

### Python API (src/voxelpic.py)

- `PointCloud` — NamedTuple of positions (Nx4 float32) and colors (Nx4 uint8)
- `encode(cloud, depth=9)` → RGBA image as numpy ndarray
- `decode(image)` → `DecodeResult` (positions, colors, count, depth)
- `image_shape(depth)` → (height, width)
- `voxel_size(depth)` → float

### Python Tests

Run with `pytest -vv` from the repo root (requires the `[test]` extra).

## C API Conventions

- All public symbols are prefixed with `voxelpic` (types) or `VPIC_` (macros).
- Functions return `voxelpicEnum` error codes (`VPIC_OK` on success).
- Opaque types `voxelpicOcTree` and `voxelpicLevel` are created with `*New()`
  and freed with `*Free()`.
- Levels obtained via `voxelpicOcTreeLevel()` are borrowed references owned by
  the octree — do not free them.
- SIMD-aligned allocation (`aligned_alloc` / `_aligned_malloc`) is used for
  position and color arrays.

## CI

- **pr_gate.yml** — runs on pull requests to `main`:
  clang-format check, builds and tests on Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu latest,
  Ubuntu ASAN (clang), Windows, macOS ARM64, plus Python builds/tests on
  each platform for Python 3.11–3.14.
- **build_wheels.yml** — builds Python wheel artifacts.

## Coding Guidelines

- C11 standard. Compile with `-Wall` on non-MSVC.
- Keep the public API in `include/voxelpic/voxelpic.h`; implementation details
  stay in `src/voxelpic.c`.
- Use `VPIC_API(return_type)` macro for all public function declarations to
  support DLL export on Windows.
- Error handling: return `voxelpicEnum` codes; use `voxelpicError()` to get
  human-readable strings.
- Python bindings: validate array dimensions and types at the boundary in
  `voxelpicpy.c`; raise Python exceptions on error.
- Test data for C tests is generated by Python scripts (`voxel_test_gen.py`,
  `image_test_gen.py`) as a post-build step.
