# Prompty v2 — Complete Rebuild Plan

## Overview

Prompty is being rebuilt from the ground up. The type system that originated in Prompty's TypeSpec specification is now owned in this repo and emitted through Typra. Prompty v2 uses the generated Prompty model packages as the canonical, lower-level type layer.

**Core principle**: Prompty is a markdown file format (`.prompty`) for LLM prompts. The frontmatter uses Prompty's Typra-generated prompt model. The markdown body becomes `instructions`. The runtime loads, renders, parses, and executes prompts.

### What Prompty Uses from the Typra-Generated Model

Only the prompt runtime subset — not every schema contract:

| Model Type                                                 | Prompty Uses                                        |
| ---------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| `Prompty`                                                  | Yes — the loaded `.prompty` file becomes this       |
| `Model`                                                    | Yes — model configuration                           |
| `Connection` (all subtypes)                                | Yes — auth/endpoint config                          |
| `ModelOptions`                                             | Yes — temperature, maxOutputTokens, etc.            |
| `Template` / `FormatConfig` / `ParserConfig`               | Yes — template engine config                        |
| `Property`                                                 | Yes — inputs/outputs                                |
| `FunctionTool`                                             | Yes — local function calling                        |
| `McpTool`                                                  | Yes — MCP server integration                        |
| `OpenApiTool`                                              | Yes — API-based tools                               |
| `CustomTool`                                               | Yes — wildcard `*` catch-all for unknown tool kinds |
| `Workflow`                                                 | No                                                  |
| `ContainerAgent`                                           | No                                                  |
| `AgentManifest`                                            | No                                                  |

### Key Design Decisions

1. **Typra owns generated model code** — schema changes flow through the in-repo TypeSpec/Typra emitter, not an external model package
2. **No `kind` in `.prompty` files** — the loader injects the generated prompt model kind when needed
3. **Markdown body → `instructions`** — the loader splits frontmatter/body and sets `agent.instructions = body`
4. **Legacy migration in the loader** — old-format `.prompty` files still load with deprecation warnings
5. **Invoker pattern retained** — Renderer → Parser → Executor → Processor pipeline, redesigned in Phase 2
6. **Use `uv` exclusively** for all Python environment and package management. Never use `pip`, `pip install`, `python -m pip`, or `python -m venv` directly. Use `uv venv`, `uv pip install`, `uv run`, etc. instead.
7. **Use generated `Prompty.load(data)` model loaders** — keep field names aligned with the generated Prompty model classes and their `load()`/`save()` behavior.
8. **`Property` has `default` and `example`** — use `default` for sample/default values.
9. **`${protocol:value}` expansion is owned by the loader** — resolve `${env:VAR}`, `${file:path}`, and related references before or during generated model loading.

## Python Coding Rules

### Environment & Tooling

- **Python ≥ 3.11** — use modern syntax: `X | Y` unions, `match`/`case`, `ExceptionGroup`, `type` aliases.
- **`uv` exclusively** — never use `pip`, `pip install`, `python -m pip`, or `python -m venv`. Use `uv venv`, `uv pip install`, `uv run`, etc. Package installs: `uv pip install -e ".[dev,all]"`.
- **Flit build system** — `flit_core >=3.11,<4`. Version is dynamic via `_version.py`.
- **Ruff** for linting and formatting. Config lives in `pyproject.toml`:
  - Line length: **120**
  - Target: `py311`
  - Rules: `E`, `F`, `I` (isort), `UP` (pyupgrade)
  - `E501` (line too long) is **ignored** (handled by formatter)
  - `__init__.py` files ignore `F401` (unused imports — they're re-exports)
  - `tests/test_otel.py` ignores `E402` (imports not at top — conditional skip)
  - Run: `uv run ruff check .` and `uv run ruff format .`

### Code Style

- **`from __future__ import annotations`** — include at the top of every module for PEP 604 style annotations.
- **Type hints everywhere** — all function signatures, return types, and class attributes must be annotated. Use `from typing import Any` sparingly; prefer specific types.
- **Docstrings** — every module gets a module-level docstring explaining purpose and registration key (if applicable). Use imperative mood. Public functions & classes get docstrings; private helpers may omit them.
- **`__all__`** — define in modules that export public API (especially `core/pipeline.py`, `core/discovery.py`). Not needed in `__init__.py` re-export files.
- **Private names** — prefix internal helpers with `_` (e.g., `_message_to_wire`, `_build_options`). These can still be imported across sibling modules within the package but signal "not public API".
- **No bare `except:`** — always catch specific exceptions. Use `except Exception:` at minimum.
- **f-strings preferred** over `%` formatting or `.format()`.
- **Constants** — `UPPER_SNAKE_CASE`, defined at module level (e.g., `ROLES`, `RICH_KINDS`, `THREAD_NONCE_PREFIX`).

### Imports

- **Internal code uses relative imports**:

  ```python
  # Inside core/pipeline.py
  from .types import Message
  from .discovery import get_renderer
  from ..tracing.tracer import trace
  # Inside providers/azure/executor.py (3 dots = up to prompty/)
  from ..._version import VERSION
  from ...core.types import Message
  from ..openai.executor import _build_options, _message_to_wire
  ```

- **Tests use absolute imports** from the package:
  ```python
  from prompty.core.types import Message, TextPart
  from prompty.providers.openai.executor import OpenAIExecutor
  from prompty.tracing.tracer import Tracer, trace
  ```
- **Users import from `prompty` directly** — everything is re-exported at the top:
  ```python
  from prompty import load, prepare, run, Message, Tracer, trace
  ```
- **Sort order** enforced by ruff's `I` (isort) rule: stdlib → third-party → local, alphabetized within groups.
- **Lazy imports for optional deps** — `openai`, `jinja2`, `chevron`, `azure.identity` are imported inside functions/methods, not at module top level, so the package works without them installed:
  ```python
  def execute(self, agent, messages):
      from openai import OpenAI  # lazy — only needed when actually called
  ```

### Async Conventions

- Every public pipeline function has a sync and async variant: `prepare()` / `prepare_async()`, `run()` / `run_async()`.
- Protocol classes define both `render()` / `render_async()`, `parse()` / `parse_async()`, etc.
- Use `aiofiles` for async file I/O (e.g., `load_prompty_async`).
- Use `pytest-asyncio` for async tests.

### Testing

- All tests in `runtime/python/prompty/tests/`.
- Run: `.venv/Scripts/python.exe -m pytest tests/ -q` or `uv run pytest tests/ -q`.
- **Mock external services** — never make real API calls. Use `unittest.mock.patch` to mock SDK clients.
- **Mock entry points** for discovery tests: patch `prompty.core.discovery.importlib.metadata.entry_points`.
- Test file naming: `test_<module>.py` — mirrors the module it tests.
- Fixtures and `.prompty` test files live in `tests/prompts/`.
- **Coverage**: `pytest-cov` available; `[tool.coverage.report] show_missing = true`.

### Package Management

- **Required deps**: `pyyaml`, `python-dotenv`, `aiofiles`.
- **Optional deps** via extras: `[jinja2]`, `[mustache]`, `[openai]`, `[azure]`, `[otel]`, `[all]`, `[dev]`.
- **Never add optional deps to `dependencies`** — they go in `[project.optional-dependencies]`.
- **Entry points** register invokers for pluggable discovery — always update `pyproject.toml` when adding a new renderer, parser, executor, or processor.
- After changing entry points, reinstall: `uv pip install -e ".[dev,all]"`.

### Error Handling

- Raise `InvokerError` (from `core/discovery.py`) for missing invoker registrations.
- Raise `ValueError` for invalid `.prompty` frontmatter, missing env vars without defaults.
- Raise `FileNotFoundError` for missing `.prompty` files or `${file:...}` references.
- Emit `warnings.warn("...", DeprecationWarning)` for legacy property migrations — never silently swallow old formats.

## Architecture

### How a `.prompty` File is Processed

```
.prompty file
     │
     ▼
utils.parse()              Split frontmatter (YAML) from body (markdown)
     │                     Returns dict with body as 'instructions' key
     ▼
_migrate_legacy()          Convert old property names → v2 Prompty model names
     │                     (with deprecation warnings)
     ▼
Load generated model       .prompty files become Prompty model instances
     │
     ▼
Prompty.load(data)         Resolves ${env:VAR}, ${file:path} through loader hooks
     │                     Populates generated model fields
     ▼
Prompty                    Fully typed: .instructions, .model, .tools,
                           .inputs, .outputs, .template, .metadata
```

### Execution Pipeline (Phases 2-3)

```
Prompty
     │
     ▼
  Renderer                 Jinja2 or Mustache: render instructions with inputs
     │
     ▼
  Parser                   Convert role markers (system:/user:/assistant:) → message list
     │
     ▼
  Executor                 Call LLM provider (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, etc.)
     │
     ▼
  Processor                Extract content/tool_calls from response
     │
     ▼
  Result
```

## Repository Structure (After Cleanup)

### What Gets Deleted

| Path                                 | Reason                                  |
| ------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------- |
| `specification/` (entire directory)  | Superseded by the in-repo schema/Typra model pipeline |
| `runtime/csharp/` (entire directory) | Auto-generated from same TypeSpec       |

### Module Responsibilities

#### `core/` — Infrastructure

| Module         | What it does                                                                                                             |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `loader.py`    | `load()` / `load_async()` — parse `.prompty` file → `Prompty`. Handles frontmatter, `${env:}`, `${file:}`.               |
| `migration.py` | `_migrate_legacy()` — converts v1 property names to v2 Prompty model names with deprecation warnings.                    |
| `utils.py`     | `parse()` — regex frontmatter/body split. `load_prompty()`, `load_text()`, `load_json()` file helpers.                   |
| `types.py`     | `Message`, `TextPart`, `ImagePart`, `AudioPart`, `FilePart`, `ContentPart`, `ThreadMarker`, `ROLES`.                     |
| `protocols.py` | Protocol classes defining the interfaces: `RendererProtocol`, `ParserProtocol`, `ExecutorProtocol`, `ProcessorProtocol`. |
| `discovery.py` | Entry-point-based lookup: `get_renderer()`, `get_parser()`, `get_executor()`, `get_processor()`, `clear_cache()`.        |
| `pipeline.py`  | `prepare()`, `execute()`, `process()`, `run()` — orchestrates renderer→parser→executor→processor.                        |

#### `renderers/` — Template Engines

| Module        | What it does                                                                  |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `_common.py`  | `THREAD_NONCE_PREFIX`, `_prepare_render_inputs()` — shared rendering helpers. |
| `jinja2.py`   | `Jinja2Renderer` — renders `agent.instructions` with inputs via Jinja2.       |
| `mustache.py` | `MustacheRenderer` — renders via Chevron (Mustache).                          |

#### `parsers/` — Format Parsers

| Module       | What it does                                                                                    |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `prompty.py` | `PromptyChatParser` — splits role markers (`system:`, `user:`, `assistant:`) → `list[Message]`. |

#### `providers/` — LLM Providers

Each provider is a subpackage with `executor.py` and `processor.py`:

| Provider  | Executor         | Processor         | Registration Key | SDK                         |
| --------- | ---------------- | ----------------- | ---------------- | --------------------------- |
| `openai/` | `OpenAIExecutor` | `OpenAIProcessor` | `openai`         | `openai` package            |
| `azure/`  | `AzureExecutor`  | `AzureProcessor`  | `azure`          | `openai` + `azure-identity` |

**Shared code**: Wire-format helpers (`_message_to_wire`, `_part_to_wire`, `_tools_to_wire`, `_build_options`,
`_schema_to_wire`) live in `providers/openai/executor.py` since Azure uses the same OpenAI SDK. The Azure
executor imports these directly. Similarly, `_process_response` lives in `providers/openai/processor.py` and
is imported by the Azure processor.

**Adding a new provider** (e.g. Anthropic):

1. Create `providers/anthropic/` with `__init__.py`, `executor.py`, `processor.py`
2. Implement `AnthropicExecutor.execute()` / `execute_async()` and `AnthropicProcessor.process()` / `process_async()`
3. Register entry points in `pyproject.toml`:

   ```toml
   [project.entry-points."prompty.executors"]
   anthropic = "prompty.providers.anthropic.executor:AnthropicExecutor"
   [project.entry-points."prompty.processors"]
   anthropic = "prompty.providers.anthropic.processor:AnthropicProcessor"
   ```

4. Add optional dependency: `anthropic = ["anthropic"]`

#### `tracing/` — Observability

| Module      | What it does                                                                                  |
| ----------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `tracer.py` | `Tracer` registry, `@trace` decorator, `PromptyTracer` (JSON file backend), `console_tracer`. |
| `otel.py`   | `otel_tracer()` — OpenTelemetry span backend. Optional dep: `opentelemetry-api`.              |

### Top-level Files

| `__init__.py` | Public API surface — re-exports everything users need from subpackages. `from prompty import X` works.                                                 |
| `_version.py` | `VERSION = "2.0.0.dev0"` — read by flit for package version.                                                                                           |
| `invoker.py`  | Backward-compatibility shim. Re-exports from `core.protocols`, `core.discovery`, `core.pipeline` so `from prompty.invoker import prepare` still works. |

### Entry Points (in `pyproject.toml`)

The invoker discovery system uses Python entry points to find implementations at runtime:

```toml
[project.entry-points."prompty.renderers"]
jinja2 = "prompty.renderers.jinja2:Jinja2Renderer"
mustache = "prompty.renderers.mustache:MustacheRenderer"
[project.entry-points."prompty.parsers"]
prompty = "prompty.parsers.prompty:PromptyChatParser"
[project.entry-points."prompty.executors"]
openai = "prompty.providers.openai.executor:OpenAIExecutor"
azure = "prompty.providers.azure.executor:AzureExecutor"
[project.entry-points."prompty.processors"]
openai = "prompty.providers.openai.processor:OpenAIProcessor"
azure = "prompty.providers.azure.processor:AzureProcessor"
```

### Import Conventions

**For users** — import from `prompty` directly:

```python
from prompty import load, prepare, run, Tracer, trace, Message
```

**For internal code** — use relative imports within the package:

```python
# Inside core/pipeline.py
from .types import Message
from .discovery import get_renderer
from ..tracing.tracer import trace
# Inside providers/azure/executor.py
from ..._version import VERSION
from ...core.types import Message
from ..openai.executor import _build_options, _message_to_wire
from ...tracing.tracer import Tracer, trace
```

**For tests** — import from the specific submodule:

```python
from prompty.core.types import Message, TextPart
from prompty.providers.openai.executor import OpenAIExecutor, _message_to_wire
from prompty.tracing.tracer import Tracer, trace
```

### Test Files

All unit tests live in `runtime/python/prompty/tests/`:

| Test File | What it covers |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| `test_loader.py`    | `.prompty` file loading, frontmatter, legacy migration |
| `test_invoker.py`   | Protocols, discovery, pipeline, thread markers         |
| `test_renderers.py` | Jinja2 and Mustache template rendering                 |
| `test_parsers.py`   | Role marker parsing → Message list                     |
| `test_executor.py`  | OpenAI/Azure executor wire format (mocked API)         |
| `test_processor.py` | Response extraction — chat, embedding, streaming       |
| `test_tracer.py`    | Tracer registry, @trace decorator, PromptyTracer       |
| `test_otel.py` | OpenTelemetry backend (skipped if otel not installed) |

Integration tests live in `runtime/python/prompty/tests/integration/` (see Phase 5):

| Test File | What it covers |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| `test_chat.py`       | Chat completions against real OpenAI / Azure endpoints |
| `test_embedding.py`  | Embedding API against real endpoints                   |
| `test_image.py`      | DALL-E 2 image generation (OpenAI only)                |
| `test_agent.py` | Agent loop with tool calling against real endpoints |
| `test_streaming.py`  | Streaming chat completions                             |
| `test_structured.py` | Structured output via outputs / response_format        |

Run unit tests: `uv run pytest tests/ -q` (or `.venv/Scripts/python -m pytest tests/ -q`)
Run integration tests: `pytest tests/integration/ -v -o "addopts="` (requires API keys in `.env`)

### Dependencies

**Required**: `pyyaml`, `python-dotenv`, `aiofiles`

## PHASE 1: Redo the Loader

### Goal

`load("path/to/file.prompty")` returns a typed `Prompty` model from the generated runtime model package.

### Files to Create/Modify

#### 1. Update `runtime/python/prompty/pyproject.toml`

```toml
[project]
name = "prompty"
dynamic = ["version"]
description = "Prompty is an asset class and format for LLM prompts"
requires-python = ">=3.11"
dependencies = [
    "pyyaml",
    "python-dotenv",
    "aiofiles",
]
[build-system]
requires = ["flit_core >=3.2,<4"]
build-backend = "flit_core.buildapi"
[tool.flit.module]
path = "prompty"
[project.optional-dependencies]
jinja2 = ["jinja2"]
mustache = ["chevron"]
openai = ["openai"]
azure = ["openai", "azure-identity"]
all = ["jinja2", "chevron", "openai", "azure-identity"]
```

No `[project.scripts]` — CLI comes later.

#### 2. Create `prompty/loader.py`

Public API:

- `load(path: str | Path) -> Prompty`
- `load_async(path: str | Path) -> Prompty`

Internal helpers:

- `_migrate_legacy(data: dict) -> dict` — deprecation conversions
- `_pre_process(agent_file: Path) -> Callable` — returns a loader callback for `${env:}` and `${file:}` resolution

**Loading flow**:

```python
from prompty.model import Prompty
def load(path: str | Path) -> Prompty:
    path = Path(path).resolve()
    # 1. Split frontmatter + body (existing util)
    data = load_prompty(path)  # returns dict with 'instructions' from body
    # 2. Migrate legacy property names
    data = _migrate_legacy(data)
    # 3. Load as the generated Prompty model shape
    data["kind"] = "prompt"
    # 4. Load through the generated Prompty model
    agent = Prompty.load(data)
    return agent
```

**Legacy migration** (`_migrate_legacy`):

| Old Property                               | New Property                                                            | Notes                                |
| ------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| `model.configuration`                      | `model.connection`                                                      | Rename                               |
| `model.configuration.type: "azure_openai"` | `model.provider: "azure"` + `model.connection.kind: "key"`              | Split                                |
| `model.configuration.type: "openai"`       | `model.provider: "openai"` + `model.connection.kind: "key"`             | Split                                |
| `model.configuration.azure_endpoint`       | `model.connection.endpoint`                                             | Rename                               |
| `model.configuration.azure_deployment`     | `model.id`                                                              | Move up                              |
| `model.configuration.api_key`              | `model.connection.apiKey`                                               | camelCase                            |
| `model.configuration.name` (OpenAI model)  | `model.id`                                                              | Move up                              |
| `model.parameters`                         | `model.options`                                                         | Rename                               |
| `model.parameters.max_tokens`              | `model.options.maxOutputTokens`                                         | Rename                               |
| `model.parameters.top_p`                   | `model.options.topP`                                                    | camelCase                            |
| `model.parameters.frequency_penalty`       | `model.options.frequencyPenalty`                                        | camelCase                            |

Each legacy conversion emits `warnings.warn("...", DeprecationWarning)`.

**Reference resolution** (`_pre_process`):

The loader resolves `${env:VAR}`, `${env:VAR:default}`, and `${file:path}` before passing data into the generated model loader.

```python
def _pre_process(agent_file: Path) -> Callable[[Any], Any]:
    def process(data: Any) -> Any:
        if not isinstance(data, dict):
            return data
        for key, value in list(data.items()):
            if not isinstance(value, str) or not value.startswith("${"):
                continue
            if not value.endswith("}"):
                continue
            inner = value[2:-1]
            protocol, _, val = inner.partition(":")
            protocol = protocol.lower()
            if protocol == "env":
                var_name, _, default = val.partition(":")
                env_val = os.environ.get(var_name)
                if env_val is None:
                    if default:
                        data[key] = default
                    else:
                        raise ValueError(f"Environment variable '{var_name}' not set for key '{key}'")
                else:
                    data[key] = env_val
            elif protocol == "file":
                relative_path = (agent_file.parent / val).resolve()
                if not relative_path.exists():
                    raise FileNotFoundError(f"Referenced file '{val}' not found for key '{key}'")
                data[key] = _load_file_content(relative_path)
        return data
    return process
```

#### 3. Update `prompty/__init__.py`

```python
from ._version import VERSION
__version__ = VERSION
# Core API
from .loader import load, load_async
# Re-export key generated model types for convenience
from .model import (
    Prompty,
    Model,
    ModelOptions,
    Connection,
    ApiKeyConnection,
    ReferenceConnection,
    RemoteConnection,
    AnonymousConnection,
    Template,
    FormatConfig,
    ParserConfig,
    Property,
    Tool,
    FunctionTool,
    McpTool,
    OpenApiTool,
    CustomTool,
)
# Tracing
from .tracer import Tracer, trace
```

#### 4. Create Test Fixtures (`tests/prompts/`)

#### 5. Create `tests/test_loader.py`

```python
# Tests to implement (each is a separate test function):
# --- Basic loading ---
# test_load_basic: load basic.prompty → assert Prompty fields
# test_load_minimal: load minimal.prompty → model shorthand works
# test_load_kind_is_prompt: agent.kind == "prompt"
# --- Instructions ---
# test_load_instructions_from_body: agent.instructions == markdown body
### Phase 1 Gate
All of the following must pass before moving to Phase 2:
- `pytest tests/test_loader.py` — all green
- `from prompty import load` works
- `load()` returns a typed `Prompty` model
- `agent.instructions` contains the markdown body
- `agent.model` is a typed `Model` object
- `agent.tools` contains typed tool instances (`FunctionTool`, `McpTool`, etc.)
- Legacy `.prompty` files load with deprecation warnings
## PHASE 2: Invoker Abstractions (IMPLEMENTED)
### Design
The invoker system uses **Protocol classes** (not ABCs) for the four pipeline stages, with
**entry-point-based discovery** replacing the old `InvokerFactory` decorator pattern:
| Component | Protocol            | Defined in          | Discovery Key                |
| --------- | ------------------- | ------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Renderer  | `RendererProtocol`  | `core/protocols.py` | `agent.template.format.kind` |
| Parser    | `ParserProtocol`    | `core/protocols.py` | `agent.template.parser.kind` |
| Executor  | `ExecutorProtocol`  | `core/protocols.py` | `agent.model.provider`       |
| Processor | `ProcessorProtocol` | `core/protocols.py` | `agent.model.provider`       |
**Discovery** (`core/discovery.py`): Uses `importlib.metadata.entry_points()` to look up
implementations registered under `prompty.renderers`, `prompty.parsers`, `prompty.executors`,
`prompty.processors` entry point groups. Results are cached; `clear_cache()` resets.
**Pipeline** (`core/pipeline.py`): Orchestrates the full flow as a four-step tree:
- `render(agent, inputs)` → rendered string (leaf)
- `parse(agent, rendered)` → `list[Message]` (leaf)
- `prepare(agent, inputs)` → render + parse + thread expansion → `list[Message]`
- `run(agent, messages)` → executor + process → final result
- `process(agent, response)` → extract content → final result (leaf)
- `execute(prompt, inputs)` → top-level: load + prepare + run
- `execute_agent(prompt, inputs, tools=...)` → agent loop with tool calls
- `validate_inputs(agent, inputs)` → check required inputs
- All have `_async` variants; `run_agent`/`run_agent_async` are backward-compat aliases
**Backward compatibility**: `prompty/invoker.py` re-exports everything from `core.protocols`,
`core.discovery`, and `core.pipeline` so `from prompty.invoker import prepare` still works.
### Implemented Files
| File                        | Contents                                                                                               |
| `tests/test_invoker.py`     | Protocol conformance, discovery, pipeline composition, thread markers                                  |
## PHASE 4: Feature Gaps — Structured Output, API Types, Streaming, Agent Loop, Headless
### Overview
Phase 4 closes the gaps between the old runtime and the new v2 runtime. The old runtime
supported multiple API types (chat, embedding, image, agent), streaming wrappers with tracing,
structured output via `response_format`, and a `headless()` convenience API. The new runtime
currently only supports `chat.completions`.
### Decisions Made
| Item                                 | Decision                                                                  |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Structured output (`outputs`)        | **Yes** — convert `outputs` → OpenAI `response_format`                    |
| Embedding API (`apiType: embedding`) | **Yes** — dispatch to `embeddings.create()`                               |
| Image generation (`apiType: image`)  | **Yes** — dispatch to `images.generate()`                                 |
| Agent loop (`apiType: agent`)        | **Yes** — auto tool-call execution loop                                   |
| Streaming wrappers                   | **Yes** — `PromptyStream` / `AsyncPromptyStream` with tracing             |
| `headless()` convenience API         | **Yes** — helper function wrapping `Prompty` construction                 |
| Serverless provider                  | **No** — API keeps changing, defer indefinitely                           |
| Runtime connection override          | **No** — loader reference resolution with `${env:}` covers this           |
| Dynamic tools from prompt body       | **Deferred** — frontmatter `tools:` is sufficient for now                 |
| Raw HTTP instead of SDK providers    | **Later** — keep SDK-based providers, design allows adding raw HTTP later |
### Implementation Order
1. Structured output (highest impact, sets patterns)
2. API type dispatch (embedding + image)
3. Streaming wrappers
4. Agent loop
5. `headless()` API
---
### Step 4.1: Structured Output (`outputs` → `response_format`) — IMPLEMENTED
**What**: When `agent.outputs` is defined, convert it to OpenAI's `response_format`
parameter so the LLM returns structured JSON matching the schema.
**Files modified**:
| File                            | Change                                                                                               |
| ------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `providers/openai/executor.py`  | Added `_property_to_json_schema()`, `_output_schema_to_wire()`, wired into `_build_args()`           |
| `providers/azure/executor.py`   | Imported `_output_schema_to_wire`, wired into `_build_args()`                                        |
| `providers/openai/processor.py` | Updated `_process_response()` to accept optional `agent`, JSON-parse when `outputs` present          |
| `providers/azure/processor.py`  | Updated `process()`/`process_async()` to pass `agent` through                                        |
| `tests/test_executor.py`        | Added `TestPropertyToJsonSchema`, `TestOutputSchemaToWire`, `TestBuildArgsResponseFormat` (14 tests) |
| `tests/test_processor.py`       | Added `TestStructuredOutput` (7 tests)                                                               |
**Key design note**: Test helpers should use generated model loaders so outputs and prompt-specific fields are populated consistently.
---
### Step 4.2: API Type Dispatch (Embedding + Image) — IMPLEMENTED
**What**: Executors dispatch on `agent.model.apiType` to support `chat`, `embedding`,
and `image` API types in addition to the default chat completions.
**Files modified**:
| File                            | Change                                                                         |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `providers/openai/executor.py`  | Refactored `execute()`/`execute_async()` to dispatch on `apiType`. Renamed     |
|                                 | `_build_args` → `_build_chat_args`, added `_build_embedding_args`,             |
|                                 | `_build_image_args`. Added per-type execution methods.                         |
| `providers/azure/executor.py`   | Same dispatch pattern, imports shared helpers from OpenAI executor.            |
| `providers/openai/processor.py` | Added `ImagesResponse` import, `_process_image()` function, and dispatch in    |
|                                 | `_process_response()`. Embedding was already handled.                          |
| `tests/test_executor.py`        | Added `TestEmbeddingDispatch` (3 tests), `TestImageDispatch` (2 tests),        |
|                                 | `TestUnsupportedApiType` (1 test). Updated `_build_args` → `_build_chat_args`. |
| `tests/test_processor.py`       | Added `TestImageProcessing` (5 tests), `TestEmbeddingProcessing` (3 tests).    |
**Dispatch logic**: `api_type = agent.model.apiType or "chat"` → branches to `_execute_chat`,
`_execute_embedding`, or `_execute_image`. Unknown values raise `ValueError`.
---
### Step 4.3: Streaming Wrappers (`PromptyStream` / `AsyncPromptyStream`) — IMPLEMENTED
**What**: Wrap streaming iterators with tracing-aware wrappers that accumulate chunks
and flush to the tracer on exhaustion.
**Files modified**:
| File                            | Change                                                                  |
| ------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `core/types.py`                 | Added `PromptyStream(Iterator)` and `AsyncPromptyStream(AsyncIterator)` |
| `providers/openai/executor.py`  | Wraps streaming responses in `PromptyStream` / `AsyncPromptyStream`     |
| `providers/azure/executor.py`   | Same wrapping                                                           |
| `providers/openai/processor.py` | Added `_async_stream_generator()`, handles `AsyncIterator` in dispatch  |
| `__init__.py`                   | Re-exports `PromptyStream`, `AsyncPromptyStream`                        |
| `tests/test_streaming.py`       | 16 tests: sync/async iteration, accumulation, processor integration     |
**Design**: `PromptyStream` wraps raw SDK iterator, accumulates chunks for tracing.
The processor's `_stream_generator` / `_async_stream_generator` then extracts delta
content from each chunk. Both wrappers compose correctly — tracing fires when the
inner `PromptyStream` is exhausted by the generator.
---
### Step 4.4: Agent Loop — IMPLEMENTED
**What**: When `agent.model.apiType == "agent"`, the executor runs a loop: call the LLM,
if it returns `tool_calls`, execute the tool functions, append results to the conversation,
and call the LLM again — repeating until the LLM returns a normal response.
**Files modified**:
| File                           | Change                                                                      |
| ------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `providers/openai/executor.py` | Added `_execute_agent()` / `_execute_agent_async()` with tool-call loop     |
| `providers/azure/executor.py`  | Delegates to OpenAI executor's agent loop via class attribute binding       |
| `tests/test_executor.py`       | Added `TestAgentLoop` (6 tests): single/multi iteration, missing tool, etc. |
**Tool registration**: `agent.metadata["tool_functions"]` dict maps tool names to callables.
Sync mode raises `ValueError` for async tools. Async mode uses `inspect.iscoroutinefunction()`
to properly `await` async tool functions.
---
### Step 4.5: `headless()` Convenience API — IMPLEMENTED
**What**: Create a `Prompty` programmatically without a `.prompty` file. Useful for
embedding calls, one-off completions, or any case where a file isn't needed.
**Files modified**:
| File                    | Change                                                            |
| ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `core/pipeline.py`      | Added `headless()` function                                       |
| `core/__init__.py`      | Re-exports `headless`                                             |
| `invoker.py`            | Re-exports `headless` (backward-compat shim)                      |
| `__init__.py`           | Re-exports `headless`                                             |
| `tests/test_invoker.py` | Added `TestHeadless` (9 tests): defaults, types, connection, etc. |
**Signature**:
```python
def headless(
    api: str = "chat",
    content: str | list | dict = "",
    *,
    model: str = "",
    provider: str = "openai",
    connection: dict[str, Any] | None = None,
    options: dict[str, Any] | None = None,
) -> Prompty:
```
Content is stored in `agent.metadata["content"]` for later use with `execute()`.
---
### Phase 4 Gate
All of the following must pass:
- `pytest tests/` — all tests green (298 tests passing)
- `ruff check .` — clean
- `agent.outputs` → `response_format` works in both OpenAI and Azure executors
- `apiType: embedding` calls `embeddings.create()` and returns vectors
- `apiType: image` calls `images.generate()` and returns URLs
- Streaming responses are wrapped in `PromptyStream` / `AsyncPromptyStream` with tracing
- Agent loop executes tool calls and loops until completion
- `headless()` creates a valid `Prompty` usable with `execute()` + `process()`
**Phase 4 Gate: PASSED** — 298 tests, ruff clean.
---
## PHASE 5: Integration Tests — IMPLEMENTED
### Overview
Integration tests live in `tests/integration/` and hit real OpenAI / Azure OpenAI endpoints.
They are **excluded by default** via `addopts = "-m 'not integration'"` in `pyproject.toml`,
so `pytest tests/` only runs the 298 unit tests. Tests auto-skip when API keys are missing.
### Running Integration Tests
```bash
# Fill in your API keys first
cp .env.example .env # or edit the existing .env

# Run all integration tests (override the default marker filter)
pytest tests/integration/ -v -o "addopts="

# Run via marker
pytest -m integration -o "addopts="

# Run only OpenAI tests (Azure will skip if keys missing)
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-... pytest tests/integration/ -v -o "addopts="
```
### Environment Variables
Configured via `.env` in the package root (`runtime/python/prompty/.env`), already gitignored.
| Variable                            | Required For    | Example                                    |
| ----------------------------------- | --------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| `OPENAI_API_KEY`                    | OpenAI tests    | `sk-...`                                   |
| `AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT`             | Azure tests     | `https://myresource.openai.azure.com/`     |
| `AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY`              | Azure tests     | `abc123...`                                |
| `AZURE_OPENAI_CHAT_DEPLOYMENT`      | Azure tests     | `gpt-4o-mini` (your deployment name)       |
| `AZURE_OPENAI_EMBEDDING_DEPLOYMENT` | Azure embedding | `text-embedding-3-small` (deployment name) |
### Skip Logic
- `@skip_openai` — skips if `OPENAI_API_KEY` is empty
- `@skip_azure` — skips if any of `AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY`, `AZURE_OPENAI_ENDPOINT`, `AZURE_OPENAI_CHAT_DEPLOYMENT` is empty
- `@skip_azure_embedding` — skips if Azure vars or `AZURE_OPENAI_EMBEDDING_DEPLOYMENT` is empty
- `conftest.py` auto-adds the `integration` marker to all tests in the directory
### Test Files
| File                 | Tests | What it covers                                            |
| -------------------- | ----- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| `test_chat.py`       | 5     | Basic + async chat, temperature control, both providers   |
| `test_embedding.py`  | 5     | Single + batch + async embeddings, both providers         |
| `test_image.py`      | 1     | DALL-E 2 image generation (OpenAI only, 256x256 for cost) |
| `test_agent.py`      | 3     | Tool-calling agent loop, sync + async, both providers     |
| `test_streaming.py`  | 3     | Streaming chat with PromptyStream/AsyncPromptyStream      |
| `test_structured.py` | 4     | Structured output via outputs → response_format           |
### Agent Helper Functions
`conftest.py` provides two helpers that build `Prompty` instances programmatically
via generated model loaders:
```python
make_openai_agent(
    api_type="chat",          # "chat" | "embedding" | "image" | "agent"
    model="gpt-4o-mini",     # model name
    options=None,             # ModelOptions dict
    tools=None, # list of tool dicts
    output_schema=None,       # outputs dict/list
    metadata=None,            # metadata dict (e.g. {"tool_functions": {...}})
)

make_azure_agent(
    api_type="chat",
    deployment=None,          # defaults to AZURE_OPENAI_CHAT_DEPLOYMENT env var
    options=None,
    tools=None,
    output_schema=None,
    metadata=None,
)
```
### Agent Mode Pattern (tool calling)
To test agent mode, define tool functions and attach them via `metadata["tool_functions"]`:
```python
def get_weather(city: str) -> str:
    return f"72°F and sunny in {city}"

agent = make_openai_agent(
    api_type="agent",
    tools=[{
        "name": "get_weather",
        "kind": "function",
        "description": "Get the current weather",
        "parameters": {
            "properties": [
                {"name": "city", "kind": "string", "required": True}
            ]
        },
    }],
    metadata={"tool_functions": {"get_weather": get_weather}},
)
```
The executor's agent loop will:
1. Send messages + tool definitions to the LLM
2. If `tool_calls` returned → look up function in `metadata["tool_functions"]`, call it, append result
3. Re-send to LLM, repeat until the model returns a normal response
### pyproject.toml Configuration
```toml
[tool.pytest.ini_options]
asyncio_mode = "strict"
markers = [
  "integration: tests that hit real OpenAI / Azure OpenAI endpoints (deselected by default)",
]
addopts = "-m 'not integration'"
```
## Post-Phase 4: API Alignment & Type Safety — IMPLEMENTED
### OpenAI API Alignment (verified against https://platform.openai.com/docs/api-reference/chat)
Reviewed our executor wire format against the current OpenAI Chat Completions API reference
and applied the following fixes:
| Issue                                  | Before                                 | After                                                          | Reason                                                                                  |
| -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `maxOutputTokens` mapping              | `max_tokens`                           | `max_completion_tokens`                                        | `max_tokens` is deprecated, not compatible with o-series reasoning models               |
| `strict` in tool definitions           | Inside JSON Schema `parameters` object | At function definition level (`func_def["strict"]`)            | `strict` is not a JSON Schema keyword; API expects it as sibling of `name`/`parameters` |
| `additionalProperties` in strict tools | Missing                                | `additionalProperties: false` in parameters schema when strict | Required by API when strict mode is enabled                                             |
**Already correct** (no changes needed):
- Tool wire format `{"type": "function", "function": {...}}`
- `response_format` with `json_schema` for structured output
- `finish_reason == "tool_calls"` in agent loop
- Message roles: `system`, `user`, `assistant`
- Options: `temperature`, `top_p`, `frequency_penalty`, `presence_penalty`, `stop`, `seed`
- Streaming: `stream: true` with wrapped response
- Azure OpenAI uses the same `openai` Python SDK, so all parameter names and formats are identical
**Files modified**:
| File                           | Change                                                                                                                                                                     |
| ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `providers/openai/executor.py` | `_build_options`: `max_tokens` → `max_completion_tokens`; `_tools_to_wire`: `strict` on func def; `_schema_to_wire`: `additionalProperties: false` replaces `strict: true` |
| `tests/test_executor.py`       | Updated `TestBuildOptions`, `TestSchemaToWire` assertions; added `test_strict_on_function_def`                                                                             |
### Pyright Type Safety Fixes
Resolved all Pyright/Pylance errors across source and test files:
| File                           | Issue                                                                                           | Fix                                                                     |
| ------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `providers/openai/executor.py` | `agent.metadata` is `dict[str, Any] \| None`, `.get()` fails                                    | Explicit `_meta = agent.metadata if agent.metadata is not None else {}` |
| `providers/azure/executor.py`  | Class attribute binding `_execute_agent = _OpenAIExecutor._execute_agent` — invalid `self` type | Proper method delegation with explicit `self` forwarding                |
| `tests/test_executor.py`       | `agent.metadata["tool_functions"]` — subscript on `None`                                        | Added `assert agent.metadata is not None` guards with `pyright: ignore` |
| `tests/test_invoker.py`        | Same metadata indexing issue                                                                    | Same fix                                                                |
| `tests/test_processor.py`      | `response.__class__ = ImagesResponse` — type mismatch on MagicMock                              | Added `type: ignore[assignment]` + `pyright: ignore`                    |
| `tests/test_streaming.py`      | `iter([])` — needs type annotation                                                              | Used `Iterator` type annotation from `collections.abc`                  |
## .prompty File Format (v2)
### Structure
```prompty
---
# YAML frontmatter — Prompty v2 model properties (minus instructions)
---
# Markdown body — becomes 'instructions' on the Prompty model
# Uses role markers and template syntax (Jinja2 or Mustache)
```
### Valid Frontmatter Properties
**Root level**:
`name`, `displayName`, `description`, `metadata`, `model`, `inputs`, `outputs`, `tools`, `template`
**Model** (`model:` or shorthand `model: gpt-4`):
`id`, `provider`, `apiType`, `connection`, `options`
**Connection** (`model.connection:`):
`kind` (`key` | `reference` | `remote` | `anonymous`), `endpoint`, `apiKey`, `name`, `target`, `authenticationMode`
**ModelOptions** (`model.options:`):
`temperature`, `maxOutputTokens`, `frequencyPenalty`, `presencePenalty`, `seed`, `topK`, `topP`, `stopSequences`, `allowMultipleToolCalls`, `additionalProperties`
**Inputs/Outputs** (`inputs:` / `outputs:`):
`properties` (list or dict of Property), `examples`, `strict`
**Property** (`inputs.X:`):
`kind` (`string` | `integer` | `float` | `boolean` | `array` | `object` | `thread`), `description`, `required`, `default`, `value`, `example`, `enumValues`
**Template** (`template:`):
`format` (`{ kind: "jinja2" }`), `parser` (`{ kind: "prompty" }`)
**Tool** (`tools:` list):
Common: `name`, `kind`, `description`, `bindings`
FunctionTool (`kind: function`): `parameters` (PropertySchema), `strict`
McpTool (`kind: mcp`): `connection`, `serverName`, `serverDescription`, `approvalMode`, `allowedTools`
OpenApiTool (`kind: openapi`): `connection`, `specification`
CustomTool (`kind: *`): `connection`, `options`
### Role Markers (in body)
```
system:     → {"role": "system", "content": "..."}
user:       → {"role": "user", "content": "..."}
assistant:  → {"role": "assistant", "content": "..."}
```
### Thread Inputs
Conversation history is handled via `kind: thread` input properties:
```yaml
inputs:
  properties:
    - name: conversation
      kind: thread
```
Place `{{conversation}}` in the template where thread messages should be injected.
The renderer emits nonce markers, which the pipeline expands into `Message` objects.
### Template Syntax
Jinja2 (default): `{{variable}}`, `{% if %}`, `{% for %}`, `{# comment #}`
Mustache (optional): `{{variable}}`, `{{#section}}`
### Variable References (in frontmatter)
- `${env:VAR_NAME}` — environment variable (required)
- `${env:VAR_NAME:default}` — with default value
- `${file:path/to/data.json}` — load JSON file content
### Shared Configuration
Use `${file:path/to/config.json}` references in frontmatter to load shared connection or model config from external JSON/YAML files. This replaces the old implicit `prompty.json` cascade — all config sources are now explicit and visible in the `.prompty` file.
## Existing Code Reference
### New Runtime Files (Implemented)
**`runtime/python/prompty/prompty/core/utils.py`**:
- `parse(contents: str) -> dict` — regex-based frontmatter/body split, puts body into `instructions` key
- `load_prompty(path) -> dict` — reads file + calls `parse()`
- `load_prompty_async(path) -> dict` — async variant
- `load_text(path)` / `load_json(path)` — file read helpers
**`runtime/python/prompty/prompty/tracing/tracer.py`**:
- `Tracer` class — context-manager based tracing with pluggable backends
- `@trace` decorator — wraps functions with tracing
- `to_dict()` — serialization helper for trace data
- `PromptyTracer` — console/file-based tracer implementation
- `console_tracer` — simple console output tracer
**`runtime/python/prompty/prompty/tracing/otel.py`**:
- `otel_tracer()` — OpenTelemetry span backend (optional dep: `opentelemetry-api`)
### Old Runtime (removed)
The v1 Python runtime (`runtime/prompty/`) has been removed. The v2 runtime at
`runtime/python/prompty/` is now the only Python implementation. Key porting notes:
- `core.py` dataclasses → generated model classes
- `invoker.py` InvokerFactory → `core/discovery.py` entry-point lookup
- `renderers.py` → `renderers/jinja2.py`, `renderers/mustache.py`
- `parsers.py` → `parsers/prompty.py`
- `load_manifest()` legacy migrations → `core/migration.py:_migrate_legacy()`
### Generated Model API Reference
Use the Typra-generated model classes under `prompty.model`. The generated
classes provide `load()` for dictionaries and `save()` for stable wire shapes.
