# GitHub Workflow Conventions
## CRITICAL: Always Update Documentation
**Whenever you modify any workflow file in `.github/workflows/`, you MUST also update `.github/WORKFLOWS.md` to reflect the changes.**
This includes changes to:
- Workflow triggers (schedule, PR events, manual, etc.)
- Flutter/Dart versions
- Test tags or target filters
- Device models or OS versions
- Exclusion patterns
- Workflow names or descriptions
- Job steps or configurations
- Any other meaningful changes to workflow behavior
### Documentation Sections to Update
`.github/WORKFLOWS.md` contains these main sections:
1. **Testing Workflows** - Android, iOS, and other platform tests
2. **Package Preparation (CI) Workflows** - CI checks for packages
3. **Publishing Workflows** - Package publishing workflows
4. **Semver Check Workflows** - Semantic versioning compliance
5. **Documentation Workflows** - Vercel deployments
6. **Utility Workflows** - Helper and automation workflows
7. **Schedule Summary** - Overview of scheduled workflows
8. **Tag-Based Test Selection** - Test filtering patterns
## Test Exclusions for Physical Device Workflows
Physical device workflows (`test-android-device.yaml`, `test-ios-device.yaml`) should exclude the entire `native_tests/` directory to reduce test duration and costs on cloud testing infrastructure.
### Standard Exclusion Pattern
```yaml
--exclude=patrol_test/web/,patrol_test/native_tests/,patrol_test/volume_test.dart
```
### Examples
**iOS device workflow:**
```yaml
- name: Build tests
run: |
patrol build ios --tags='ios && physical_device' --exclude=patrol_test/web/,patrol_test/native_tests/,patrol_test/volume_test.dart --release --verbose
```
**Android device workflow:**
```yaml
- name: patrol build android
run: |
patrol build android \
--tags='android && physical_device' \
--exclude patrol_test/web/,patrol_test/native_tests/,patrol_test/volume_test.dart \
--verbose
```
