# goguma > A free, open-source macOS menu bar app that wakes a sleeping Mac shortly > before each scheduled job is due, holds sleep off while the job runs, and > lets the machine sleep again once it finishes. It also keeps a coding agent > working with the lid closed. Requires macOS 14 or later, or Linux with > systemd. MIT licensed. goguma does not run your jobs. Your existing scheduler still fires them — goguma makes sure the machine is awake when they do. A sleeping Mac does not queue the jobs it missed and catch up later; cron skips them outright, with no error written anywhere, which is why the failure usually goes unnoticed for weeks. (launchd is different: it re-fires a missed `StartCalendarInterval` job on wake, and goguma leaves those alone.) ## What makes it different from caffeinate, Amphetamine and pmset - **They can only keep an awake machine awake. goguma can wake a sleeping one.** It schedules real OS wakes with `pmset schedule` for jobs it found by reading your existing schedulers. - **`pmset -a disablesleep 1` is a global switch with no owner.** It persists in the power management preferences even if the process that set it is killed, so nothing ever turns it back off. goguma's holds are leases that expire on their own, and its privileged helper clears a stranded block after 60 seconds without contact. - **caffeinate holds sleep off only with the lid open.** Close the lid on battery and the Mac sleeps through the job anyway. goguma uses `pmset` itself — `pmset -a disablesleep` and `pmset schedule`. The part that is not pmset is knowing what to arm, when, and when to refuse. ## Where jobs come from It reads schedulers you already have: `crontab`, user and system launchd jobs, and Hermes. Apps that keep their own schedule store can be described to it with a JSON manifest. You define nothing. ## Coding agents Hooks are installed automatically for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor and Gemini CLI, so those report when they are working and the Mac stays awake until they stop. Any other agent or long command can be wrapped: `goguma run -- <command>`. The hold lasts exactly as long as that command. Agent activity cannot be detected by watching processes: an agent waiting on a model is blocked on a socket and looks identical to an idle one. The work is not local, so the harness has to say so. ## Safety - Holds expire by themselves: 90 seconds for a wrapped command without renewal, 15 minutes for an agent session, 12 hours maximum however often renewed. - With the lid closed, every hold is dropped if the machine gets hot or the battery falls below the cutout — the state where a machine in a bag cannot show you anything is wrong. - It refuses to schedule a wake at all when the battery cannot afford the job, because a cutout cannot un-wake a machine once the energy is spent. The margin is the job's own measured drain, not a flat number. ## Privacy No telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting, no account. Jobs, history and settings stay in `~/Library/Application Support/goguma`. The only request it makes is fetching a signed advisory feed, sent with no User-Agent beyond the Go runtime's default, no query string and no cookies. A webhook is sent only if you configure one. ## Security Four binaries, one of which runs as root. The privileged helper answers six messages and holds no policy; everything else runs unprivileged. All binaries are signed with a Developer ID and notarised by Apple, and setup names who signed the helper before asking for your password, refusing to install it if that signature cannot be verified. ## Articles All of these in full, in one markdown file: https://getgoguma.com/llms-full.txt - [Why your Mac's cron jobs don't run while it's asleep](https://getgoguma.com/blog/cron-jobs-dont-run-mac-asleep/) - [How to wake a Mac for a scheduled job with pmset](https://getgoguma.com/blog/wake-mac-for-scheduled-job-pmset/) - [How to find which scheduled jobs your Mac has been missing](https://getgoguma.com/blog/find-missed-scheduled-jobs-mac/) - [launchd vs cron on macOS: which one survives sleep](https://getgoguma.com/blog/launchd-vs-cron-sleep/) - [caffeinate vs pmset vs Amphetamine](https://getgoguma.com/blog/caffeinate-vs-pmset-vs-amphetamine/) - [Why caffeinate doesn't work when you close the lid](https://getgoguma.com/blog/caffeinate-lid-closed/) - [Amphetamine alternatives for macOS, compared](https://getgoguma.com/blog/amphetamine-alternatives-mac/) - [You cannot tell whether an AI coding agent is working by watching it](https://getgoguma.com/blog/cannot-detect-ai-agent-working/) - [Is it safe to keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed in a bag?](https://getgoguma.com/blog/macbook-awake-in-bag-safe/) - [How to keep Claude Code or Codex running with the lid closed](https://getgoguma.com/blog/keep-coding-agent-running-lid-closed/) - [How to keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed](https://getgoguma.com/blog/keep-macbook-awake-lid-closed/) - [How to find out what woke your Mac](https://getgoguma.com/blog/what-woke-my-mac/) - [How to keep a Mac awake from the terminal until a command finishes](https://getgoguma.com/blog/keep-mac-awake-terminal-command/) - [pmset repeat: put your Mac's sleep and wake on a daily schedule](https://getgoguma.com/blog/pmset-repeat-wake-schedule/) - [Dark wake and Power Nap: when your Mac is awake but not really](https://getgoguma.com/blog/dark-wake-power-nap/) - [pmset disablesleep: the sleep switch with no owner](https://getgoguma.com/blog/pmset-disablesleep/) - [Every pmset sleep setting, explained](https://getgoguma.com/blog/pmset-sleep-settings-explained/) - [Why SSH sessions drop when your Mac sleeps, and what actually survives](https://getgoguma.com/blog/ssh-sessions-mac-sleep/) ## Docs - [Home](https://getgoguma.com/): what it does, with a FAQ - [Security](https://github.com/junnam586/goguma/blob/main/SECURITY.md): what runs as root, and why - [Coding agents](https://github.com/junnam586/goguma/blob/main/Docs/CODING-AGENTS.md): hooks, and wrapping anything else - [Architecture](https://github.com/junnam586/goguma/blob/main/Docs/ARCHITECTURE.md): how the daemon, helper and CLI fit together - [Source](https://github.com/junnam586/goguma): MIT licensed - [Privacy](https://getgoguma.com/privacy/) - [Terms](https://getgoguma.com/terms/) ## Install Download [goguma.dmg](https://github.com/junnam586/goguma/releases/latest/download/goguma.dmg), drag it to Applications and open it.
