> A local-first personal operating system template for thinking, planning, creating and evolving with an AI interface.

The Sovereign Ecosystem is an open-source, local-first personal operating system built on Obsidian and Claude Code. It is a public template and reference implementation for founders, creators and operators who want to run their life and work from a sovereign, AI-augmented knowledge base. Your files stay local and readable. Your AI works inside your world rather than pulling you into someone else's. Built by Lane Belone. Licensed MIT.

This file is the navigation manifest for AI agents. Repository behavior and harvest instructions live in AGENTS.md. Human setup lives in README.md.

## What It Is

The Sovereign Ecosystem is a structured Obsidian vault template with an AI interface running inside it. It ships governance, capture and routing, planning, session rhythm and archival as a working foundation, plus optional modules a user adds when a real need appears. It is lived infrastructure, not admired architecture. The structure is meant to be edited and owned, not preserved as a fixed belief system.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the Sovereign Ecosystem?** A local-first personal operating system template for running your life and work from a sovereign, AI-augmented knowledge base. It is built on Obsidian and Claude Code and released as a public MIT-licensed template.

**Who is it for?** Founders, creators and operators who want their files, structure and AI to stay theirs, and who want to build a personal operating system rather than rent one inside someone else's platform.

**What do I need to use it?** Four things. Obsidian (free, local-first markdown app), Claude Code (Anthropic's AI interface, used as a VS Code extension or terminal tool), Git, and a free GitHub account. Full onboarding typically costs $10 to $25 in Claude Code API usage at a comfortable pace.

**Do I need to know how to code?** No. The AI interface does the building. You direct it through a guided session sequence in the Getting Started folder.

**Can I rename it?** Yes. Sovereign Ecosystem is the canonical architecture name. Your instance carries whatever name feels like yours. You also name your AI interface, which ships as a baseline you replace.

**Can I use a different AI tool?** Claude Code and Codex are the recommended starting tools because they are strong enough to build with today. The design horizon is more sovereign tooling over time: local models, personal hardware and platform-agnostic interfaces as they mature.

**How is it different from a notes app or a second brain?** Most knowledge tools store what you write. The Sovereign Ecosystem runs your work. Governance, planning, session rhythm and an AI interface operate inside the vault, and everything stays local and readable. You own the structure end to end.

## Repository Structure

- `README.md`: Human setup guide and project overview
- `AGENTS.md`: AI agent discovery, routing and harvest instructions
- `.github/CONTRIBUTING.md`: How to contribute upstream (issues, framework pull requests, adaptations)
- `BOOTSTRAP.md`: Guided onboarding wizard at the repo root. A self-deleting six-question setup that personalizes the vault and points to the first session
- `.runtime/primer.md`: Pre-loaded forward handoff surface, read first at session start
- `MODULES.md`: Index of optional modules and what each adds
- `Getting Started/`: Onboarding session sequence, Sessions 0 through 9, plus Optional Paths including the Obsidian MCP Bridge and Local Inference and Semantic Search
- `Council Chamber/`: Governance, codices, protocols, skills, templates, scripts. Includes the External Model Routing Codex (external worker dispatch) and the Manuscript Anti-AI Edit Pass skill
- `.mcp.json.example`: Template MCP config for the optional Obsidian vault bridge, read-only by default
- `Council Chamber/scripts/external-worker.mjs`: Dispatch entry point for secondary external model providers
- `Council Chamber/scripts/doctrine-mass.mjs` and `Council Chamber/scripts/doctrine-references.mjs`: Read-only doctrine lifecycle instruments (layer mass counts, inbound-link and orphan detection)
- `Council Chamber/scripts/session-coordination.mjs`: Advisory concurrent-session signal. `Council Chamber/scripts/encrypt-stream.mjs`: Optional AES-256-GCM backup encryption
- `Library/`: Reference surfaces, north star, expression references
- `Inbox/`: Capture landing zone for ideas and routing
- `Vault (Archive)/`: Archived artifacts and logs

## Core Concepts

- **Pending Plans**: The planning primitive. Structured documents combining purpose, phases, approval gates and execution logs. Non-trivial work runs through a Pending Plan.
- **Codices**: Living reference documents that govern behavior, vocabulary and judgment. Read, not executed.
- **Protocols**: Execution procedures. Run, not referenced.
- **Skills**: Named, structured prompt templates that activate specific capabilities. Invoked by name.
- **Flywheels**: Repeating rhythm structures that accumulate signal over time.
- **AI Interface**: The user's named AI agent. Holds session continuity, executes skills and maintains governance anchors.
- **Sovereignty Direction**: Progressive sovereignty by design. Build now with strong tools. Iterate toward local models and platform-agnostic interfaces as they mature.

## Ecosystem

The Sovereign Ecosystem repo is one node in a four-node web built by Lane Belone.

- [lanebelone.com](https://lanebelone.com): Author, philosophy and the Infinite Game home surface
- [sidequesthq.co](https://sidequesthq.co): Workshops, retreats and advisory, the applied contribution engine
- [infinitegameos.io](https://infinitegameos.io): Infinite Game OS, the AI-agent-first structured knowledge base
- [Sovereign Ecosystem on GitHub](https://github.com/infinitegameplayer/sovereign-ecosystem): This repo, the technical and agentic architecture reference

Many Foundation skills are dual-distribution. They ship inside this template and also install as standalone plugins from the Infinite Game OS public library at infinitegameos.io, for practitioners who already run a system of their own. Both sets are enumerated below, as lists rather than counts, so that adding a skill leaves no second number to keep in step with it. The template is the full experience. The plugins are individual doors. The template stays current with upstream through the Sovereign Sync skill and `Council Chamber/scripts/se-update.mjs`, a per-file approval flow that keeps a clone living rather than frozen.

The full library at infinitegameos.io/skills holds twenty-eight installable plugins (twenty-seven skills plus one protocol), seven bundles and two governing protocols. Two of those skills live in the library rather than in this template. Everything else that makes sense for every build ships here, so an agent working from this repo has the whole Foundation on disk already. The Claude Code install flow: `/plugin marketplace add https://www.infinitegameos.io/marketplace.json` then `/plugin install <skill-name>@igos-library`.
