# GroupDocs.Metadata MCP Server

MCP server that exposes GroupDocs.Metadata for .NET — read, write, and remove document metadata via AI agents (Claude, Cursor, VS Code / GitHub Copilot, and other MCP-compatible clients).

## Install

- With dnx (.NET 10 SDK, no install step): `dnx GroupDocs.Metadata.Mcp@26.9.0 --yes`
- As a global dotnet tool: `dotnet tool install -g GroupDocs.Metadata.Mcp` then run `groupdocs-metadata-mcp`
- As a Docker container: `docker run --rm -i -v $(pwd)/documents:/data ghcr.io/groupdocs-metadata/metadata-net-mcp:latest`
- Native prerequisite for native (dnx / global tool) runs on Linux and macOS: install libgdiplus — `sudo apt-get install -y libgdiplus libfontconfig1` on Linux, `brew install mono-libgdiplus` on macOS. Not needed on Windows (GDI+ built in) or in Docker (bundled in the image).

## MCP tools

- ReadMetadata — extract all metadata properties (author, title, dates, EXIF, XMP, IPTC, custom) as grouped JSON
- SearchMetadata — return only properties matching a category/name/value filter ("show me the author", "does this have GPS?")
- WriteMetadata — set/add a property (Author, Title, Subject, Keywords, Comments, Copyright, Company, Manager) and save
- RemoveMetadata — strip all metadata, or only specific categories (gps, author, comments, dates, software, …), and save a clean copy
- GetDocumentInfo — return file type, MIME type, page count, byte size, and encryption status as JSON (no metadata dump)

## Supported formats

PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, MP3, MP4, WAV, AVI, and 110+ other document, image, and media formats.

## Environment variables

- GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH — base folder for input + output (defaults to current working directory)
- GROUPDOCS_MCP_OUTPUT_PATH — optional, routes output files to a separate folder
- GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH — path to GroupDocs.Total.lic, omit for evaluation mode

## Licensing

The MCP server is MIT; the underlying GroupDocs.Metadata engine requires a license for production use. Evaluation mode (no license): A single server process can open at most 15 documents; further calls fail with an evaluation-cap error until the server restarts. Saving metadata changes (write / remove) is blocked without a license. Free 30-day temporary license: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/temporary-license/ — purchase: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/pricing/metadata/net

## Example prompts for AI agents

- "Read the metadata from report.pdf"
- "What's the author and creation date of contract.docx?"
- "Remove all metadata from every file in the /uploads folder"
- "Does sample.jpg have GPS coordinates in its EXIF data?"
- "How many pages is contract.pdf, and is it encrypted?"
