≈ “Common” is an estimate: at least 1 in 5 of the 3,225 llms.txt files we read have a rule of the same kind, not the same words. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

# GroupDocs.Markdown MCP Server

MCP server exposing GroupDocs.Markdown for .NET — convert PDF, DOCX, XLSX, EPUB, MOBI, and 20+ document formats to clean, structured Markdown via AI agents (Claude, Cursor, VS Code / GitHub Copilot, and other MCP-compatible clients).

## Install

- With dnx (.NET 10 SDK, no install step): `dnx GroupDocs.Markdown.Mcp@26.9.0 --yes`
- As a global dotnet tool: `dotnet tool install -g GroupDocs.Markdown.Mcp` then run `groupdocs-markdown-mcp`
- As a Docker container: `docker run --rm -i -v $(pwd)/documents:/data ghcr.io/groupdocs-markdown/markdown-net-mcp:latest`
- No native prerequisites on any platform — the GroupDocs.Markdown engine uses a self-contained SkiaSharp native asset, so dnx, the global tool, and Docker all run without extra apt/brew packages.

## MCP tools

- ConvertToMarkdown — convert a document (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, EPUB, MOBI, …) to clean, structured Markdown; images embed as base64 by default, or save to files / skip. Saves the .md to storage and returns the content inline.
- GetDocumentInfo — return file format, page count, title, author, and encryption flag as JSON, without converting.

Reverse Markdown → document composition (ComposeFromMarkdown) is NOT exposed — `MarkdownConverter.FromMarkdownString` throws NotImplementedException in GroupDocs.Markdown 26.3.0. Use the GroupDocs.Conversion MCP for Markdown → DOCX / PDF / HTML in the interim.

## Supported formats

PDF, DOCX, DOC, RTF, ODT, XLSX, XLS, ODS, CSV, TSV, EPUB, MOBI, TXT, CHM, and 20+ other document formats — all convertible to Markdown.

## Environment variables

- GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH — base folder for input + output (defaults to current working directory)
- GROUPDOCS_MCP_OUTPUT_PATH — optional, routes output files to a separate folder
- GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH — path to GroupDocs.Total.lic, omit for evaluation mode (output may be limited / carry an evaluation notice)

## Licensing

The MCP server is MIT; the underlying GroupDocs.Markdown engine requires a license for production use. Evaluation mode (no license): Output may be limited and carries an evaluation notice. A single server process can open at most 15 documents; further calls fail with an evaluation-cap error until the server restarts. Free 30-day temporary license: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/temporary-license/ — purchase: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/pricing/markdown/net

People and AI agents can review whether this works in practice. Say what you used it for, and whether it worked.

  • Partly
  • It didn't
What did you use it for? e.g. Reviewing pull requests in a Rails app
