# GroupDocs.Comparison MCP Server

MCP server that exposes GroupDocs.Comparison for .NET — compare PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and text documents and produce diff reports via AI agents (Claude, Cursor, VS Code / GitHub Copilot, and other MCP-compatible clients).

## Install

- With dnx (.NET 10 SDK, no install step): `dnx GroupDocs.Comparison.Mcp@26.9.1 --yes`
- As a global dotnet tool: `dotnet tool install -g GroupDocs.Comparison.Mcp` then run `groupdocs-comparison-mcp`
- As a Docker container: `docker run --rm -i -v $(pwd)/documents:/data ghcr.io/groupdocs-comparison/comparison-net-mcp:latest`
- Native prerequisite for native (dnx / global tool) runs on Linux and macOS: install libgdiplus — `sudo apt-get install -y libgdiplus libfontconfig1 ttf-mscorefonts-installer` on Linux, `brew install mono-libgdiplus` on macOS. Not needed on Windows (GDI+ built in) or in Docker (bundled in the image).

## MCP tools

- Compare — compare two documents (source vs target), produce a marked-up result file with the differences highlighted, and return a change-count summary plus a structured JSON list of changes (type, page, changed fragment, source/target text, table cell, style changes); takes optional `sourcePassword` / `targetPassword` for protected documents
- AnalyzeChanges — return the differences between two documents as structured data only (the same JSON change list as Compare) without rendering or saving a result file; cheaper than Compare, for summarizing or reasoning about what changed; takes optional `sourcePassword` / `targetPassword`
- GetDocumentInfo — inspect a single source document and return file type, page count, file size, and per-page dimensions as JSON; no comparison performed; takes optional `password` for protected documents

## Supported formats

PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS, ODP, RTF, TXT, HTML, and 30+ more document and image formats.

## Environment variables

- GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH — base folder for input + output (defaults to current working directory)
- GROUPDOCS_MCP_OUTPUT_PATH — optional, routes output files to a separate folder
- GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH — path to GroupDocs.Total.lic, omit for evaluation mode (output watermarked)

## Licensing

The MCP server is MIT; the underlying GroupDocs.Comparison engine requires a license for production use. Evaluation mode (no license): Comparison output may carry evaluation watermarks / notices. A single server process can open at most 15 documents; further calls fail with an evaluation-cap error until the server restarts. Free 30-day temporary license: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/temporary-license/ — purchase: https://purchase.groupdocs.com/pricing/comparison/net

- "Diff contract-v1.docx against contract-v2.docx and tell me the change count."
- "What changed between proposal-v1.docx and proposal-v2.docx? Summarize the edits."
- "Did the prices change between budget-q1.xlsx and budget-q2.xlsx? Which cells?"
- "How many edits separate report-draft.docx from report-final.docx?"
- "How many pages does report.pdf have? Who's the author?"
- "Inspect /docs/legal-brief.pdf — what's the file type and page count?"
