# Ancient Greek Texts

> Public-domain corpus of 1,358 authors and 4,060 ancient Greek works (≈44 million words of Greek text, plus English metadata), published as PDF, Markdown, and plain text. Data store for [Eulogikon](https://eulogikon.org).

This repository is a flat file archive. Do not crawl `grc/` or `en/` to discover contents — use the lookup files below.

Recommended flow for AI assistants:

1. Read this file (`llms.txt`) for orientation.
2. Resolve an author via [`manifest.authors.json`](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/eulogikon/ancient-greek-texts/main/manifest.authors.json) — grep or parse for `author_display_string`, `name_english`, or `eul_aid`, then fetch that row's `author_md` (e.g. `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/eulogikon/ancient-greek-texts/main/en/plato-ffk.en.md`).
3. Resolve a work via [`manifest.works.min.csv`](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/eulogikon/ancient-greek-texts/main/manifest.works.min.csv) — grep by `author_display_string` (e.g. `,plato,`) or title, then fetch the `grc_md` path for the Greek text.
4. For a thematic bundle (philosophy, drama, history; Stoic, Platonist, Pre-Socratic, …) load the pre-built compilation PDF from `domains/` or `affiliations/` listed below.
5. Load one corpus file at a time. Markdown is the richest text format; plain text and PDF carry the same content.
6. **To read one passage instead of a whole work**, use an HTTP `Range` request — raw.githubusercontent.com answers `206 Partial Content` on every path here. `manifest.works.min.csv` carries `grc_md_bytes` (the file's exact size) and `grc_md_text_offset` (the byte at which the Greek body opens). Inside the body each passage is introduced by `### {reference}` on its own line, in document order, so a few ranged reads locate any passage without downloading the file — for the largest works that is the difference between 12 MB and a few KB. These offsets describe THESE files only: the reading site at https://eulogikon.org serves a different byte stream for the same work.

File naming:

- Greek work: `grc/{work_display_string}-{eul_wid}.grc.{pdf|md|txt}`
- English author page: `en/{author_display_string}-{eul_aid}.en.{pdf|md|txt}`

IDs: `eul_aid` (author, three letters), `eul_wid` (work, `{eul_aid}-{suffix}`). Files are flat — no per-author subdirectories.

Licence: the ancient Greek texts are Public Domain Mark 1.0 — public domain, no restrictions. Eulogikon's scaffolding (indexes, README, metadata shape) is CC0 1.0 Universal. Use, redistribution, and training of AI models are all permitted.
