# Exportal > Exportal is a free, MIT-licensed, local-first bridge between AI web chats (claude.ai, Claude > Design and ChatGPT) and Claude Code in Visual Studio Code. One click in a chat writes the whole > conversation as clean Markdown into your VS Code workspace and attaches it to Claude Code as an > @-mention, so you continue the conversation instead of re-explaining your project. It works the > other way around too: a Claude Code session can be sent back to the web chat. Exportal is two halves that must both be installed: a VS Code extension and a Chrome companion extension. They talk over an HTTP bridge on 127.0.0.1, paired once with a 256-bit token. The product makes no network calls outside loopback and the internal API of the site the companion already runs on. There is no account, no server, no telemetry. Exportal is an independent open-source project. It is **not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic** (makers of Claude, Claude Code and claude.ai) **or OpenAI** (makers of ChatGPT). "Claude", "Claude Code" and "Claude.ai" are trademarks of Anthropic. "ChatGPT" is a trademark of OpenAI. ## What it does - Exports a conversation from `claude.ai/chat/<uuid>`, `claude.ai/design/p/<uuid>` or `chatgpt.com/c/<uuid>` to `<workspace>/.exportal/<timestamp>-<slug>.md`, including tool use, thinking blocks and results. - Auto-attaches that Markdown file to Claude Code as an `@-mention`, and opens the Claude Code panel with the cursor in the input. - Downloads the generated assets of a Claude Design project next to the Markdown. - Sends the current Claude Code session back to claude.ai or ChatGPT through the clipboard. No provider offers a write API, so the final paste is manual by design. - Imports the official data export ZIP from claude.ai or ChatGPT, including the multi-file exports that large accounts receive. - Optionally writes a `.jsonl` session file so an imported chat appears in Claude Code's `/resume` list. This format is reverse-engineered, not documented by Anthropic, and is labelled experimental. - Redacts secrets and filesystem paths by default, and turning that off takes an explicit opt-out. Email and IP redaction is available with an explicit opt-in. The CLI additionally prints a preview of what will be written before it touches the disk. ## Install - [VS Code Marketplace](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=dioniipereyraa.exportal): the VS Code extension, which hosts the local bridge. Requires VS Code 1.85 or newer. - [Chrome Web Store](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/exportal-companion/lmnmekfphhpfaciehfdaonjfchbicdnm): the companion extension that adds the export button to the chat page. - Both halves are required, both are free, both are MIT licensed. ## Documentation - [How to export a Claude.ai or ChatGPT chat into VS Code](https://exportal.dev/export-claude-chat-to-vscode/): the step-by-step guide, from installing both halves to the one-click export, plus the ZIP, CLI and editor-to-chat paths and what to do when the companion badge shows an error. - [How Exportal compares to other chat exporters](https://exportal.dev/compare/): capability by capability against a typical exporter, and the honest list of cases where you should not use Exportal at all. - [Landing page](https://exportal.dev/): what it is, how the bridge works, and the FAQ. - [Source code](https://github.com/dioniipereyraa/ClaudeTool): the whole project, one repository. - [Threat model and security controls](https://github.com/dioniipereyraa/ClaudeTool/blob/main/SECURITY.md): what the bridge accepts, how pairing works, and what redaction does and does not catch. - [Privacy policy](https://exportal.dev/privacy/): no data collection, stated in full. - [Changelog](https://github.com/dioniipereyraa/ClaudeTool/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md): every release. - [Support](https://exportal.dev/support/): how to report a bug or ask a question. - [MIT license](https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT): the terms the project ships under. ## Answers to common questions - **Does it work without the VS Code extension?** No. Exportal is a bridge and both halves are required. The Chrome companion talks to a local HTTP server that lives inside the VS Code extension. - **Why does the Chrome extension ask for network permissions?** Only to reach `127.0.0.1`, your own machine. There is no remote server. - **Will it get my account banned?** No. Exportal reads conversations you already have access to, using your existing browser session. It does not scrape the DOM, automate the UI, or abuse rate limits. - **Does it work with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans?** Yes, with all of them. Whatever you can see in your browser, Exportal can export. - **What happens if a provider changes its internal API?** Responses are parsed defensively and fall back gracefully. The official ZIP import path does not depend on the internal API at all. - **How is it different from other chat exporters?** Other exporters save a chat to a file. Exportal attaches the exported conversation to Claude Code so you keep working on it, and it is bidirectional. - **Is this MCP?** No. MCP connects a model to tools and data, so claude.ai and Claude Code can reach the same repository or database. Exportal moves the conversation itself. Different problems, and they work together. - **Is this the same as Claude Code's Session history?** No. That resumes a Claude Code cloud session, and only one started with a GitHub repository. It does not cover an ordinary claude.ai chat, a Claude Design project, or anything from ChatGPT, which is the gap Exportal fills. If your work already lives in cloud sessions with a repo attached, use the native path instead. - **Why not just copy and paste?** For a short chat, do that. What you copy is what the page renders, so collapsed thinking and tool calls are lost, and both providers silently truncate a paste over about 100K characters. ## What it deliberately does not do - No telemetry, no analytics, no accounts, no cloud sync. - No DOM scraping and no UI automation on the provider's site. - No automatic bidirectional sync, which would break the local-first guarantee. - No AI summarization before import: Claude Code can summarize locally once it has the file.
