# MCP Server Setup (kubectl-kontext)

When working on MCP integration or setup, follow `local_mcp_setup/setup_instructions.md` as the canonical workflow.

- Use `make install-mcp` to install `kubectl-kontext` and `mcp_server.py` under `$HOME/.local/bin/kubectl-kontext/`.
- Configure Claude Desktop with absolute paths only (`~` is not expanded).
- Keep MCP launch command as `uv run /absolute/path/to/mcp_server.py`.
- Ensure `KUBECONFIG` is explicitly set in Claude Desktop MCP server env.
- Verify tools exposed by MCP are `get_cluster_report`, `get_current_context`, and `switch_context`.

## Safety checks before changes

- Do not introduce new hard dependencies beyond current Python + FastMCP usage unless explicitly requested.
- Preserve subprocess-based behavior for `kubectl` context inspection/switching.
- Keep `get_cluster_report` behavior aligned with the local `kubectl-kontext` executable.

## Expected validation

- `make install-mcp` completes successfully.
- `uv run local_mcp_setup/mcp_server.py` starts without import/runtime errors.
- Claude Desktop config points to the installed absolute script path.
