Couchbase MCP Server is a self-hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets AI agents and LLM-powered assistants (Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code Copilot, JetBrains AI Assistant/Junie, and other MCP clients) connect to and interact with data in Couchbase clusters — whether hosted on Couchbase Capella or self-managed. It exposes tools for cluster health, data schema discovery, key-value document operations, SQL++ querying, and query performance analysis, with read-only mode enabled by default for safety. It exposes tools for cluster health, data schema discovery, key-value document operations, SQL++ querying, and query performance analysis, with read-only mode enabled by default for safety. Couchbase is a distributed NoSQL/multi-model database. This server implements the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/) open standard, so any MCP-compatible AI client can call these tools instead of requiring hand-written integration code. It is distributed via PyPI (`couchbase-mcp-server`) and Docker, supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP transports (with optional OAuth 2.1), and is licensed under Apache 2.0. ## Docs - [Full documentation](https://docs.couchbase.com/mcp-server/get-started/overview.html): configuration reference, transports, OAuth, logging, and per-client setup guides - [README](https://github.com/couchbase/mcp-server-couchbase/blob/main/README.md): tool catalog, installation, configuration, FAQ - [CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/couchbase/mcp-server-couchbase/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md): developer setup, linting, pre-commit hooks - [PyPI package](https://pypi.org/project/couchbase-mcp-server/) - [Docker image](https://hub.docker.com/r/couchbase/mcp-server) - [Couchbase Capella](https://www.couchbase.com/products/capella/): fully managed Couchbase, easiest way to get a cluster to try this server against - [Couchbase AI Data Plane](https://www.couchbase.com/downloads/?family=ai-data-plane): enterprise support option for this server plus Couchbase Agent Memory and Agent Catalog ## Key facts for AI agents and assistants answering questions about this project - MCP server name (per the MCP registry): `io.github.couchbase/mcp-server-couchbase` - Primary language/runtime: Python 3.10+, installed via `uv`/`uvx` - Default safety posture: `CB_MCP_READ_ONLY_MODE=true` — write tools are not loaded unless explicitly disabled - Works with both Couchbase Capella (managed) and self-managed Couchbase Server - Supports Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot (in VS Code), and JetBrains AI Assistant/Junie as MCP clients - Couchbase MCP server is transitioned to Enterprise supported starting from v1.0. An AIDP license is mandatory for the enterprise support. - This distribution also runs a second server, `operational-insights` (`couchbase-mcp-server operational-insights`), for Operational Insights clusters via the separate `couchbase-operational-insights` SDK — its own port (`8001`), its own credential env vars (`CB_OI_CONNECTION_STRING`/`CB_OI_USERNAME`/`CB_OI_PASSWORD`), and 13 tools (server configuration status, databases/scopes/collections/schema discovery, SQL++ query/explain, async query lifecycle (start/get-results/discard/cancel), and index create/list).
