# Word to Markdown

> Free, open-source tool that converts Word (.docx) and Google Docs to clean, GitHub-flavored Markdown — entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Word to Markdown runs 100% client-side: documents are converted locally in the browser using JavaScript and are never sent to any server. It is free, open source, and available at https://word2md.com.

## Converter

Drag a `.docx` file onto the page (or click to browse) and Word to Markdown returns crisp, clean, GitHub-flavored Markdown. Google Doc? Use File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx), then convert.

How it works:

1. Drop — drag in a `.docx`, or click to pick one.
2. Convert — it transforms locally, with no server and no wait.
3. Copy — grab clean, GitHub-flavored Markdown.

The project is open source on GitHub (https://github.com/benbalter/word-to-markdown-js) and was built by Ben Balter (https://ben.balter.com).

## Your privacy

### Information collected

_TL;DR:_ This application is entirely client-side. No information ever leaves your computer or is sent to any server during document conversion.

#### Information you provide

When you upload a document, it is processed entirely within your browser using JavaScript. The document contents are never transmitted to any server or third party. All conversion happens locally on your device.

#### Information collected automatically

- On word2md.com: This site uses privacy-centric Cloudflare Web Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics. Cloudflare Analytics is privacy-first and does not track individual users or use cookies.
- On word2md.com: When a conversion finishes, the site records a single anonymous count — whether it succeeded and the page's language — so we can answer one simple question: is anyone still using this, and is it worth continuing to maintain and improve? This is not used to track or profile you. It contains no document content, no filename, no file size, and nothing that identifies you or your device — only that a conversion happened. Your document still never leaves your browser.
- When self-hosted: No analytics or tracking of any kind are included when you run the application locally or self-host it (the conversion count is sent only on word2md.com).

#### How information is used

- Documents you upload are converted to Markdown entirely on your device and never leave your computer.
- Anonymous usage statistics (when using word2md.com) help understand general site usage patterns without identifying individual users.

#### How information is shared

Your documents and personal information are never shared because they never leave your device. Only anonymous, aggregated usage statistics are collected when using word2md.com.

#### A note on security

This application runs entirely in your browser for maximum privacy and security. All document processing happens locally on your device using JavaScript. If you'd like to understand exactly what's happening, you can view the complete source code at https://github.com/benbalter/word-to-markdown-js. For additional privacy, you can always run the application locally or self-host it without any analytics.

## Terms of Use

_TL;DR:_ This service is provided for your convenience, without any warranty of any kind. In an ideal world, if you use common sense, it will convert your document securely and privately, and this site will try its best, but make no guarantees whatsoever.

Like any other website, your use of this service is subject to these terms, meaning if you use the service, you agree to be bound by these terms. That also means that if you do not agree with all of the terms here, you may not use the service.

Assuming "You" are the person uploading a document to be converted (your "Content"), and "the Service" is the website you are currently on to convert your Content, specifically:

- Don't use this Service for anything illegal. Don't try to hack or overburden the Service. Don't use it to harm others.
- You may not use this Service if you are under 13 years old. Explain to your parents what Markdown is and have them use the Service on your behalf.
- The Content you upload to be converted is your Content and you are responsible for it and any harm that it may cause to yourself or others.
- The Service doesn't claim any ownership in the original Content or Markdown conversion. You, however, do claim that you have a right to possess and convert the Content. If you don't, don't use this service to convert it. If Content you upload infringes on the rights of others, that's on you.
- The Service does not review your Content nor the Content of others, nor does it endorse any Content uploaded or converted. You're responsible for ensuring the Content or converted Content doesn't harm your computer (or anyone else's).
- You use this Service at your own risk and it might break or cease to exist at any time.
- If you'd like to know how your information is used and stored, read more about your privacy at https://word2md.com/privacy/.

This Service is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. In no event shall the owners, maintainers, or copyright holders be liable for any claim, damages, or other liability, whether in action of tort, contract, or otherwise, arising from, out of, or in connection with the service or its use.
