Aura answers a question Git cannot: not which lines moved, but which agent moved
them, what it was trying to do, and whether it did what it said it would. It ships
as a command-line tool, a desktop Agentic Development Environment, and a VS Code
extension, all reading and writing the same `.aura/` meaning plane.

Install: `curl -fsSL https://auravcs.com/install.sh | bash`, then `aura init` in
any git repository. Building from source: `cargo build --release` from the root.
Licence: Apache 2.0. Languages parsed: Rust, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Go,
Java, C#, C++, C, Ruby, PHP, Swift and Kotlin, via Tree-sitter.

## What it does

- Provenance: who or what changed each symbol, the stated reason, and a signature
over both. `aura why <file>` prints the commit, the prompt that asked for it and
the intent that was logged while it was written.
- Intent gatekeeper: a pre-commit hook compares the stated intent against the AST
changes actually made, and blocks a commit whose description does not match the
  code it touches.
- Function-level rewind: `aura rewind` reverts a single function to its last good
state without unwinding the commit around it. It operates on AST nodes, so there
  are no text merge conflicts.
- Semantic review: `aura pr-review` diffs the graph rather than the text, catching
layer violations, silent deletions and architectural drift.
- AI usage and cost tracking: `aura usage` reads local agent transcripts to report
token spend by project, with no API calls.
- Crew: an autonomous work loop that plans a dependency graph of tasks and lets
multiple agents work it in parallel without colliding on the same symbols.

## Agent integration

- MCP server: `{"mcpServers": {"aura-vcs": {"command": "aura", "args": ["mcp"]}}}`
  exposes 30+ tools, including `aura_log_intent`, `aura_snapshot`, `aura_rewind`,
  `aura_pr_review`, `aura_prove` and `aura_usage`.
- Sessions are detected and tracked from Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI, Kimi,
Cursor and OpenCode. The git-hook capture path works with any tool that commits.

## Privacy

All data is stored locally in `.aura/` and git notes. Nothing leaves the machine
unless cloud sync is configured. Telemetry is opt-out via `AURA_TELEMETRY_OPTOUT=1`
or `DO_NOT_TRACK=1`. Usage tracking reads local transcripts only.
