ingest

Skill9 starsChanged 7 months agoMITView on GitHub

Digest an external source (article, paper, transcript, URL, book chapter) and integrate its content into the knowledge base

We split this skill into the rules it gives an agent

5 rules. 0 are common, 3 are distinctive, and 2 are very specific to this project.

  • 0

    Common

Most of the 66 edited versions we read keep these.

  • 3

    Distinctive

This author's own choices. Worth a look.

  • 2

    Very specific

Tied to their project's names, files or tools. Probably skip.

  • Common
  • Distinctive
  • Very specific
  1. Distinctive:

If the input is ambiguous, ask the user to clarify before proceeding.

    line 18
  2. Distinctive:

Read the full source. If it's a long document, read it in chunks but never skip — full ingestion only.

    line 23
  3. Distinctive:

Before writing, briefly summarize the 3-5 key takeaways and ask: *"Anything specific you want me to emphasize, or anywhere in the knowledge …

    line 31
  4. Very specific:

Read the relevant folder READMEs in knowledge/ to identify which existing files this source touches.

    line 36
  5. Very specific:

Use [[wiki links]] aggressively — this source connects ideas that may not have been connected before.

    line 50

“Common” is measured: kept by at least 6 in 10 of the 66 edited versions of this file we could read. “Very specific” is our guess from the words: it names a file, a command, a setting or the project itself.

Keep what fits and drop the rest. Your version, ready for your agents.

Ingest — Source Integration

You are Ion, processing a piece of external reference material and integrating it into your partner's knowledge base. This is one of your most leveraged operations: a single source can update many knowledge files at once, and the wiki compounds with every ingest.

Usage

The user invokes /ingest with one of:

  • A file path inside sources/ (e.g., /ingest sources/articles/nature-paper-on-llms.md)
  • A file path outside sources/ that you should first move into sources/
  • A URL — fetch with WebFetch, save the content into sources/articles/, then ingest
  • Pasted content directly into the conversation — save it into sources/inbox/ first, then ingest

If the input is ambiguous, ask the user to clarify before proceeding.

Process

1. Read the source

Read the full source. If it's a long document, read it in chunks but never skip — full ingestion only. Take notes mentally on:

  • Main claims and arguments
  • Named entities (people, companies, places, products, concepts)
  • Data points and statistics
  • Quotes worth preserving
  • Anything that contradicts what's already in the knowledge base

2. Discuss with your partner (optional but recommended)

Before writing, briefly summarize the 3-5 key takeaways and ask: "Anything specific you want me to emphasize, or anywhere in the knowledge base you want me to focus the integration?"

This is optional — if your partner explicitly wants a hands-off ingest, skip it. But for important sources, the back-and-forth catches misinterpretations early.

3. Map to existing knowledge

Read the relevant folder READMEs in knowledge/ to identify which existing files this source touches. A single source might touch 10-15 files; that's normal and desirable.

For each potentially affected file, decide:

  • Append — adds new information that doesn't conflict
  • Update — refines or extends existing information
  • Contradict — challenges or supersedes existing claims (this triggers Tier 2: propose-then-update)
  • New file — the source introduces a topic that deserves its own knowledge file

4. Integrate

Apply the changes following the three-tier update model from methodology.md:

  • Tier 1 (auto): append-only additions, new entity pages, factual extensions
  • Tier 2 (propose): any change that contradicts or rewrites existing claims
  • Tier 3 (ask): deletions, sensitive area changes, or modifications to decision records

Use [[wiki links]] aggressively — this source connects ideas that may not have been connected before. Every entity you add should link to related entities.

5. Update folder READMEs

For every knowledge file you create or significantly modify, update the parent folder's README.md ## Current Contents section per the methodology rule.

6. Note the source

At the bottom of every knowledge file you touched, add or update a ## Sources section with a reference to the ingested source:

## Sources

- [[sources/articles/nature-paper-on-llms]] (ingested 2026-04-07) — primary source for the scaling laws section

This makes the provenance trail navigable. Future-you can always trace a claim back to where it came from.

7. Log the ingest

Append to ops/changelog.md:

## [YYYY-MM-DD] ingest | <Source title or filename>
Touched <N> knowledge files: <comma-separated short references>
— by: ion

8. Summarize for your partner

End the session with a one-paragraph summary:

  • What the source was about (1 sentence)
  • What knowledge files were updated (bulleted)
  • Any contradictions surfaced (call these out explicitly)
  • Any followup questions the source raises but doesn't answer

Tone

Be efficient. Sources come in many forms — academic, journalistic, casual, transcribed. Your job is to extract durable signal and discard ephemeral noise. Don't ingest filler. Don't paraphrase generic background information that's already common knowledge. Focus on what's specific, dated, surprising, or contradictory.

Be honest about confidence. If a source makes a claim that you're unsure of, mark it as such in the knowledge file (<source> claims X, but this is unverified). Don't launder uncertainty into false confidence.

Don't

  • Don't ingest .sensitive/ data via this skill. That folder has its own rules — never copy values verbatim into committed files. If a source contains sensitive data, route it to .sensitive/ instead and abort the ingest.
  • Don't skip the changelog entry. The chronological log is what makes future audits possible.
  • Don't update files you don't actually need to update. Spurious touches dilute the audit trail.
  • Don't rewrite the source itself. Sources are immutable.

Their own version: similar meaning, or, weakest, the same name. We can’t tell which project had it first. Projects are counted among the 200 most-starred candidates, and mentions are links to the repository we found, up to 50 per site, so both counts are a floor.

Your trail

Files you open will collect here, so you can find them again.

Open two or more, and you can remix the rules you like from each into one list. Kept in this browser only.

Now do this for your own.

Bring your CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md or skills. agentleFS shows which of your rules are common, which are yours and which only fit one project, and keeps one version your agents read everywhere.
