## Full Documentation
## Introduction
ConClear is a local utility for managing AI coding session data — disk space, leaked secrets, lost files, and conversation history — across every major AI coding tool. It reads session files directly from disk, gives you a unified view, and hands the same data to your agents through MCP. Nothing leaves your machine.
## The four things it does
- **Reclaim disk space.** Every screenshot you paste into a session sits in that file forever. ConClear finds them, shows them, and lets you strip or resize them — per-image or in bulk. Sessions go from 100 MB+ back to a few MB.
- **Find and redact leaked credentials.** Pasted API keys, AWS keys, GitHub PATs, bearer tokens, `.env` dumps. ConClear scans for them, shows where they are, redacts them in place with one click (backup written first), and links to the right rotation page so you actually roll the key.
- **Recover lost work.** Every file your agent read, wrote, or edited is preserved with full content and version history. Open the session, browse versions, view with syntax highlighting, copy the code back out.
- **Bridge sessions to your agents.** ConClear ships an MCP server that you install into 11 AI clients with one command. Agents can then search, summarize, list files, scan secrets, and pull conversation context from any past session — without leaving the chat.
## Why this matters
Pasted screenshots break agents downstream:
```
An image in the conversation exceeds the dimension limit for many-image requests (2000px).
Run /compact to remove old images from context, or start a new session.
```
Pasted credentials end up archived in plaintext, surviving the conversation, sometimes the project, sometimes the laptop. Lost agent edits get re-asked from memory. Every one of these is solvable — they just need a tool that treats session history as a first-class, queryable, mutable resource.
## Privacy
ConClear runs entirely on your machine. There is no cloud, no telemetry, no account, no upload. Session data is read from local disk, displayed in a local web UI on `localhost:3789`, and mutated only in place (with verified, restorable backups). The MCP server runs locally and is spawned on demand by each client — there is no persistent process.
## What is ConClear?
> **A session history layer for AI coding tools.** It treats your past AI sessions as a first-class, queryable, mutable resource — the way `git` treats code history.
ConClear started as a way to clean up screenshot bloat in Claude Code session files. As more adapters were added and the MCP server matured, it turned into something bigger: a unified reader, writer, search engine, and integration layer for the session data of every major AI coding assistant. This page is the honest map of what's actually possible today — including emergent uses we didn't design for, and gaps where features exist for one tool but not yet others.
## Three modes
| Mode | What it does | Primary interfaces |
|---|---|---|
| **Manage** | Strip screenshots, resize images, delete bloat, recover files, scan for leaked secrets | Web UI, REST API, CLI |
| **Query** | Search, summarize, replay, export sessions | Web UI, CLI, MCP server |
| **Integrate** | Install ConClear's MCP (and Skill) into AI clients in one command | `conclear install` CLI |
## Capability matrix
Capabilities are grouped by *what the agent or user can do*. For each row: which AI tools' session data the capability applies to today, and which surfaces expose it.
### Discover / list
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-detect installed AI tools by probing data dirs | claude, cursor, cline, gemini, copilot | UI, REST |
| Unified session list across all detected tools, sorted by last active | all 5 | UI, MCP `conclear_sessions`, REST |
| Filter sessions by project name | all 5 | UI, CLI, MCP, REST |
| mtime-keyed cache so repeated scans are fast | all 5 | (internal) |
### Read / inspect a session
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Per-session detail (metadata, image inventory, tool-result bytes) | all 5 | UI, REST `GET /sessions/:id`, MCP `conclear_summary` |
| Clean conversation (user/assistant text only, system tags stripped) | all 5 | UI, CLI `context`, MCP `conclear_context`, REST |
| Per-image preview + full base64 fetch | all 5 | UI, REST |
| Image dimension inference from base64 header (no full decode) | all 5 | (internal — surfaces as "oversized image" warning) |
| Token / cost analytics from the tool's own metadata | cline | UI, MCP, REST `Session.usage` |
### Files & versions
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| List every file the agent read / edited / wrote, with N versions | claude, cline | CLI `files`, MCP `conclear_files` / `conclear_file_content`, REST `GET /sessions/:id/files` |
| Retrieve the full content of a specific file version | claude, cline | CLI `files --latest`, MCP `conclear_file_content`, REST `GET /sessions/:id/files/:lineNumber` |
| Glob/regex match on file paths across sessions | claude, cline | CLI `conclear files <pattern>` |
### Search
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Global text search over messages across every detected tool | claude, cline (best); copilot/gemini/cursor (best-effort) | UI `Cmd+K`, MCP `conclear_search`, REST `GET /search` |
| System-tag stripping so hook/sysprompt noise doesn't pollute results | all 5 | (always on) |
Why "best-effort" for some: search reads files line-by-line and looks for Anthropic-shaped JSON. Claude (JSONL) and Cline (JSON array) match cleanly. Copilot's single-JSON, Cursor's SQLite blobs, and Gemini's per-chat JSON degrade gracefully — they just match less.
### Mutate (with mandatory timestamped backup)
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Strip selected images | all 5 | UI, REST `POST /sessions/:id/strip` |
| Strip every image in a session | all 5 | UI, REST |
| Resize images to target byte budget (via `sharp`) | claude, cline | UI, REST `POST /sessions/:id/resize` |
| Restore a stripped image from external base64 | all 5 | UI, REST `POST /sessions/:id/restore` |
| Mutate Cursor SQLite directly (rewrites `composerData:` / `bubbleId:` blobs) | cursor | UI, REST |
### Export
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown export with rich tool details, diffs, headings | claude, cline, gemini | UI, CLI `export`, REST `GET /sessions/:id/export` |
| Plain-text export (`--format txt`) | claude | CLI |
### Security
| Capability | Tools | Surfaces |
|---|---|---|
| Scan for high/medium/low-severity secrets (API keys, bearer tokens, AWS, GitHub PATs, env files, …) | claude, cline, gemini, cursor | UI, CLI `scan`, REST `GET /sessions/:id/scan`, MCP `conclear_scan_secrets` |
| Redact matched secrets in place (replaces with `****REDACTED****`, writes backup) | claude, cline, gemini | UI Security page, REST `POST /sessions/:id/redact` |
| Rotate-this-key link mapping a finding's type → provider rotation URL (OpenAI / Anthropic, AWS IAM, GitHub tokens, GitHub SSH keys) | all scanning tools | UI Security page |
| Restore any prior version of a session file from a backup | all mutating tools | UI Backups page, REST `POST /api/backups/:name/restore` |
### Install / lifecycle
| Capability | Surfaces |
|---|---|
| Install ConClear's MCP (and Skill) into 11 AI clients | CLI `install` |
| Uninstall from any subset | CLI `uninstall` |
| Status / health check per client | CLI `doctor` |
| JSONC-safe edits for clients with comment-bearing configs (Zed) | (internal) |
See [Install into AI Clients](install.md) for the full reference.
## Emergent uses
Things that *fall out of composing primitives*, not separate commands. Agents have discovered most of these:
- **Recover a deleted file the agent had read or written.** The full content lives in the session's tool results, retrievable by line number even after the file is gone from disk.
- **Time-travel a single file across an agent run.** Multiple versions per file, ordered by line number / timestamp, let you diff version *n* vs *n−1*.
- **"When did X first/last happen?"** Cross-tool search returns timestamps + session names + roles, system-tag stripped.
- **Pull clean context from session A into session B.** `conclear_context` returns user/assistant text only, capped at 100KB — an agent in another IDE can ingest it directly.
- **Audit replay of an agent's actions.** Timeline events (`edit | read | write | bash | search | agent | image | error`) reconstruct what the agent actually did, including bash commands with exit codes.
- **Find code the agent suggested but you never committed.** Diff `parseFileHistory` results against the current git tree.
- **Triage where a leaked secret first appeared.** Loop `listSessions()` → `scanSecrets()` and sort by severity.
- **Reclaim disk space.** `imageSizeBytes` + `toolResultSizeBytes` + `hasOversizedImages` rank deletion targets; strip or resize cleans them with reversible backup.
- **Cost analysis.** `Session.usage` (Cline today) exposes tokens in/out, cache hits, total USD per task.
## Known limitations (latent capabilities)
Honest about what doesn't work yet:
- **Windsurf chats are not readable.** Cascade conversations are stored as encrypted protobuf files in `~/.codeium/windsurf/cascade/*.pb`. Reading them would require reverse-engineering Codeium's encryption. ConClear *can* still install its MCP server into Windsurf (`conclear install --windsurf`) so any Windsurf session can query *other* tools' history through ConClear.
- **Cursor file history.** Cursor stores tool calls in `toolFormerData` blobs inside `cursorDiskKV` SQLite rows. The blob shape is parseable but not yet wired into `getFileHistory`. Until that lands, file recovery works for Claude Code and Cline only.
- **Cursor redact** is intentionally deferred. Rewriting SQLite blobs while Cursor is running is risky and the cache-invalidation story is murky. Cursor sessions are read-only for the secrets pipeline — scan finds them, rotate links roll them, and the recommended cleanup is to delete the session inside Cursor itself.
- **Copilot Chat capability gain.** Read-only today; no scan / redact / export. Lower priority because Copilot's session data is the smallest of the five and rarely contains pasted credentials in the wild.
- **MCP coverage for Cursor's `suggestedCodeBlocks` and `checkpointId`.** Both fields are parsed but unused. They could surface as "code Cursor proposed that I didn't accept" and a per-bubble rewind navigator respectively.
These gaps are listed deliberately — every one is a path to a new capability with the primitives already in place.
## Add your own
If you discover a use we didn't anticipate, the smallest contribution is editing this page's **Emergent uses** section to document it. The larger one is wiring a missing primitive — see [Architecture](architecture.md) and [Adapter Pattern](adapter-pattern.md).
## Getting Started
ConClear runs as a local Node.js application. It requires Node.js 22 or later.
There are three ways to use ConClear:
1. **Web UI** -- a visual session browser that runs a local server and opens in your browser.
2. **CLI** -- query commands that run directly without a server.
3. **MCP server** -- an stdio-based server that AI agents can use to query your session history.
ConClear auto-detects which AI tools you have installed by checking their standard data directories. No configuration is needed.
Once the CLI is installed, `conclear install` wires the MCP server (and Skill, where supported) into your AI clients automatically — see [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
## Installation
This page covers installing the `conclear` CLI itself. To install ConClear's MCP server **into** an AI client (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.), see [Install into AI Clients](install.md) after finishing here.
## Requirements
- Node.js 22.0.0 or later
## Install globally via npm
```bash
npm install -g conclear
```
## Run without installing
```bash
npx conclear
```
## Build from source
```bash
git clone https://github.com/ItsCodejac/conclear
cd conclear
npm install
npm run build
npm start
```
## Development mode
```bash
npm run dev
```
This starts both the Vite dev server (for the React frontend with hot reload) and the Express backend via `tsx watch`.
## Quick Start
## Launch the Web UI
```bash
conclear
```
This starts a local server on port 3789 and opens your browser to `http://localhost:3789`. ConClear scans all detected AI tool data directories and displays your sessions.
## Try the CLI
List your recent sessions:
```bash
conclear sessions
```
Search across all sessions:
```bash
conclear search "auth middleware"
```
Get a session summary:
```bash
conclear summary my-session-name
```
All CLI commands work without the web server -- they read session files directly.
## Set up the MCP server
Run a single command to install the MCP server (and Skill, where supported) into every AI client you have installed:
```bash
conclear install
```
This auto-detects Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Google Antigravity, Zed, Cline, Codex CLI, and Kiro CLI. To see what's installed where:
```bash
conclear doctor
```
To start the server manually (or for clients that aren't auto-installable):
```bash
conclear mcp # stdio (default)
conclear mcp --http # Streamable HTTP on :7331
```
If you'd rather wire ConClear up by hand, the canonical MCP entry is:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"conclear": {
"command": "conclear",
"args": ["mcp"]
}
}
}
```
See [Install into AI Clients](install.md) for the full reference.
## Install into AI Clients
`conclear install` wires ConClear's MCP server (and Skill, where supported) into your AI clients in one step — no hand-editing of config files.
```bash
conclear install
```
By default this detects every supported client on your machine and installs into each one. To inspect what's installed afterward:
```bash
conclear doctor
```
To remove:
```bash
conclear uninstall
```
## Supported clients
| Client | MCP install | Skill install | Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ✓ | ✓ | `claude mcp add` (file fallback) |
| Claude Desktop | ✓ | — | file (restart required) |
| Cursor | ✓ | ✓ | file |
| Windsurf | ✓ | — | file |
| VS Code (Copilot Chat) | ✓ | — | `code --add-mcp` (file fallback) |
| Google Antigravity | ✓ | ✓ | file |
| Zed | ✓ | — | JSONC-aware file (comments preserved) |
| Cline | ✓ | — | file |
| Codex CLI | ✓ | — | `codex mcp add` (TOML fallback) |
| Kiro CLI | ✓ | — | file |
| Continue | manual | — | YAML snippet printed |
Continue uses a YAML config; rather than ship a YAML parser dependency, ConClear prints the exact snippet to paste. Everything else is automated.
**Windsurf note:** `conclear install --windsurf` installs the MCP server fine and lets any Windsurf agent query *other* tools' sessions through ConClear. **Reading Windsurf's own chat history is not currently supported** — Cascade conversations are stored as encrypted protobuf files in `~/.codeium/windsurf/cascade/*.pb`, and decoding them would require reverse-engineering Codeium's encryption. See [What is ConClear?](what-is-conclear.md#known-limitations-latent-capabilities) for the full list of known limitations.
## Flags
| Flag | Behavior |
|---|---|
| _(none)_ | Install for every detected client |
| `--all` | Install for every supported client, even undetected ones |
| `--<client-id>` | Install only for the named client(s) — see IDs below |
| `--no-skill` | Skip skill install; MCP only |
Client IDs match the "Method" rows above: `claude-code`, `claude-desktop`, `cursor`, `windsurf`, `vscode`, `antigravity`, `zed`, `cline`, `continue`, `codex`, `kiro`.
```bash
conclear install --claude-code --cursor
conclear install --all --no-skill
conclear uninstall --zed
```
## What it writes
For each client, `install` adds a single MCP server entry named `conclear` pointing at `conclear mcp`. Per-client schema details (VS Code's `servers` key + `type: stdio`, Zed's `context_servers` + required `source: "custom"`, Antigravity's `serverUrl` for remote servers) are handled automatically.
When a client supports skills, the bundled `skill.md` is copied to:
- Claude Code: `~/.claude/skills/conclear/SKILL.md`
- Cursor (v2.2+): `~/.cursor/skills/conclear/SKILL.md`
- Google Antigravity: `~/.gemini/config/skills/conclear/SKILL.md`
## Backups
Before any config edit, the original file is copied to `~/.conclear/backups/` with a timestamp. Uninstall and re-install both create their own backups.
## Doctor
`conclear doctor` prints a per-client status table:
```
ConClear install status:
Claude Code detected mcp:on skill:on
Claude Desktop detected mcp:on
Cursor detected mcp:off skill:off
Windsurf detected mcp:off
VS Code detected mcp:off
Google Antigravity detected mcp:on skill:on
Zed detected mcp:off
Cline — mcp:off
Continue — mcp:off
! YAML config — install is manual
Codex CLI detected mcp:off
Kiro CLI — mcp:off
! Kiro config path inherited from Amazon Q Developer — verify after install
```
Per-client notes surface known footguns (e.g. Windsurf's ~100-tool cap).
## Manual configuration
If you'd rather wire ConClear up by hand — for unsupported clients, or to use a custom command path — the canonical MCP entry is:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"conclear": {
"command": "conclear",
"args": ["mcp"]
}
}
}
```
VS Code uses `servers` instead of `mcpServers` and requires `"type": "stdio"`. Zed nests under `context_servers` and requires `"source": "custom"`.
## HTTP transport
For clients that prefer Streamable HTTP, or for sharing one server across multiple clients:
```bash
conclear mcp --http --port 7331
```
Stdio remains the default; SSE is not supported (deprecated upstream).
## Web UI
The ConClear web UI is a React + Vite application served by a local Express server on port 3789. Launch it with:
```bash
conclear
```
The UI is dark-only and uses the Signal Lime accent system (`#cbf24e`). Nothing in it sends data anywhere — everything is local file I/O over a localhost socket.
## Layout
A single-window shell with three regions:
- **Titlebar** — brand, global search palette (`⌘K`), MCP chip, total bytes, rescan button.
- **Left rail** — top-level navigation: Reclaim, Sessions, Security, Connect, Backups, Settings. Counts on the right side of each item (Sessions count, Security count with alert styling when > 0, Connect count of installed clients).
- **Main pane** — the active page.
When you open a session from the Sessions page, the detail view replaces the main pane with a tabbed view (Summary / Images / Chat / Timeline / Files / Security) — see [Session Detail Tabs](session-detail.md).
## Pages
| Page | Purpose | Doc |
|---|---|---|
| Reclaim | Overview — what's taking space, what needs attention | [reclaim.md](reclaim.md) |
| Sessions | Per-tool session list with project grouping, filtering, sorting | [session-browser.md](session-browser.md) |
| Security | Findings across every scanned session, with redact + rotate | [security.md](security.md) |
| Connect | Install ConClear into AI clients (MCP + Skill) | [connect.md](connect.md) |
| Backups | Every restore point with action + origin + Restore button | [backups.md](backups.md) |
## Keyboard
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| `⌘K` / `Ctrl+K` | Open search palette (global across sessions, messages, files) |
| `⌘R` / `Ctrl+R` | Rescan sessions |
| `Esc` | Close palette / detail view / lightbox |
See [Keyboard Shortcuts](keyboard-shortcuts.md) for the full list.
## Caching
To make navigation feel instant:
- **Sessions** hydrate from `localStorage` on cold start, with a background refresh.
- **Scan results** are kept in a module-level singleton shared by the sidebar count, the Security page, the per-session Security tab, and the SessionDetail header. Switching pages never re-scans.
- **Backups** list is fetched fresh per visit (cheap; small directory listing).
## Demo mode
If you want to explore the UI without your real session data, launch with `conclear --demo` — every adapter is rerooted at the bundled fixtures.
## Reclaim
The Reclaim page is the landing page of the Web UI. It answers the question *"what's taking space, what's risky, and what should I do first?"*
## What's on it
**Hero stat** — total session data on disk, with image bytes called out separately (those are the recoverable bytes). One-click button: "Clean N problem sessions" runs a guided resize against every session ConClear flagged as oversized.
**Side cards** — image-vs-other byte breakdown, and a "Needs attention" counter that combines oversized-image sessions and sessions with secret findings.
**Per-project breakdown** — sorted by total bytes, with a meter showing how much of each project's data is images vs other content. Click a project to filter the Sessions page.
**Per-tool breakdown** — same idea but grouped by AI tool (Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, …). Useful for spotting "oh, all my bloat is from one tool."
**Problem sessions list** — sessions flagged as oversized, in size order. Each row links straight to the session detail view.
## First-run onboarding
If no AI clients have ConClear's MCP installed yet, a banner appears above the hero pointing you to Connect with the bulk-install primed. Dismiss it once and it stays dismissed.
## Pairs with
- [Sessions](session-browser.md) — drill into individual sessions
- [Security](security.md) — the other "needs attention" lane
- [Connect](connect.md) — install MCP into AI clients
## Session Browser
The session browser is the left pane of the web UI. It lists all detected sessions across all supported AI tools.
## Session List
Each session row displays:
- **Name** -- the session's custom name (if set) or a preview of the first user message.
- **Tool icon** -- which AI tool created the session (Claude, Cursor, Gemini, Cline, Copilot).
- **Project** -- the project directory associated with the session.
- **Timestamp** -- when the session was last active.
- **Size indicator** -- visual indicator of session size, color-coded by how large it is.
- **Image count** -- number of images embedded in the session.
- **Warning icon** -- amber icon if the session contains oversized images that could trigger dimension limit errors.
## Search
Press `/` to focus the search bar. Search filters sessions by name, preview text, and project name. Clear the search with Escape.
## Navigation
- `Up` / `Down` arrow keys navigate the session list.
- `Enter` selects the highlighted session.
- Click a session to select it.
- Double-click to expand to full-panel view.
## Sorting
Sessions are sorted by most recently active by default.
## Refresh
Press `Cmd+R` (macOS) or `Ctrl+R` to refresh the session list. The server re-scans all data directories and uses mtime-based caching to only re-parse changed files.
## Security
The Security page is where ConClear's secrets pipeline lives. It scans every session that supports scanning, surfaces what it found, and lets you redact and rotate in one place.
## What's on it
**Three stat cards** — total findings, high-severity count, and `scanned X / Y` progress for the supported-tool subset.
**Per-session groups** — each session that has findings gets its own group, sorted by finding count. Click the session name to open it.
**Per-finding row** — for every match:
- Severity pill (high / medium / low)
- Pattern type (`api_key`, `aws_key`, `github_token`, `bearer_token`, `private_key`, `env_credential`, `database_url`, `webhook_token`, `env_file`, `sensitive_path`)
- Redacted preview of the actual value (first 4 / last 4 chars)
- Line number where it was found
- Surrounding context (≤120 chars, secret itself redacted)
- **Rotate this key** link to the provider's rotation page where one exists
- **Scissors button** to redact just this finding
- **Chevron** to open the session at this point
**Redact all** button at the top loops every session-with-findings and redacts them all. Always writes a backup first.
## Scan cache
The scanner is shared across the whole app — the per-session Security tab, the sidebar count, the SessionDetail header badge, and this page all read from the same module-level cache. Cache persists to `localStorage` so the next cold start has a result to show within milliseconds while the live scan refreshes in the background.
Force a fresh scan with **Rescan all**.
## Redact, then rotate
Redacting removes the secret from the *session file*. It does not invalidate the credential at the provider. The Rotate links exist because every redact-without-rotate is a half-done fix:
| Finding type | Rotation target |
|---|---|
| `api_key` | OpenAI / Anthropic API keys page |
| `aws_key`, `aws_secret` | AWS IAM security credentials |
| `github_token` | GitHub developer settings → tokens |
| `private_key` | GitHub settings → SSH keys (or your relevant provider) |
| `bearer_token`, `database_url`, `webhook_token`, `env_credential` | No single URL — rotate at whatever issued it |
## What gets scanned
Patterns and their severities live in `src/server/adapters/secrets.ts`. The same table is used by every adapter so additions land everywhere at once.
| Tool | Scan | Redact |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cline / Roo Code | ✓ | ✓ |
| Gemini CLI | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cursor | ✓ | — (use Rotate links + delete session in Cursor) |
| GitHub Copilot Chat | — | — |
## Pairs with
- [Backups](backups.md) — every redact writes a restorable backup
- [Secret Scanning & Redact](secret-scanning.md) — operational deep-dive
## Connect
The Connect page is the visual surface for `conclear install` / `uninstall` / `doctor`. It lists every supported AI client, shows install state, and lets you toggle MCP and Skill installs without touching the terminal.
## What's on it
**MCP server panel** — explains that the MCP server is *spawned on demand* by each installed client (no persistent process), shows the available transports (stdio + Streamable HTTP), and lists every tool agents get access to:
- `conclear_search`
- `conclear_sessions`
- `conclear_summary`
- `conclear_context`
- `conclear_files`
- `conclear_file_content`
- `conclear_scan_secrets`
A **Manual config** affordance copies the canonical JSON entry into your clipboard if you want to wire up a client by hand.
**Client cards** — one per supported client:
- Detection state (detected / not installed)
- Install method tag (CLI, file, deeplink, manual)
- MCP toggle (busy state while installing)
- Skill toggle (for clients that support Skills — Claude Code, Cursor v2.2+, Antigravity)
- Per-client notes (e.g., Windsurf's tool-count cap, Continue's manual paste)
**Install into N detected** — bulk button at the top. Wires up every client ConClear detected in one pass.
## Manual-install modal
A few clients (currently Continue, which is YAML) can't be auto-edited safely. For these, the install action opens a modal with the exact snippet to paste — Copy button included.
## Honest framing
The MCP chip in the titlebar used to say "running" with a live dot, which was wrong — there is no persistent ConClear MCP process. The chip and the Connect panel now reflect that: stdio MCP is spawned by each client when it needs to call a tool.
## Pairs with
- [Install into AI Clients](install.md) — CLI reference for the same operations
- [MCP Server](mcp-server.md) — what the MCP surface actually does
## Backups
Every destructive operation in ConClear (strip images, resize images, redact secrets) writes a verified, timestamped backup of the affected session file to `~/.conclear/backups/` *before* it touches the original. The Backups page lets you see them, restore them, and clean them up.
## What's on it
- **Total stored** — chip showing combined backup size
- **Delete all** — bulk cleanup (with confirmation)
- **One row per backup** with:
- Backup filename (encodes the project + session + ISO timestamp)
- Relative age ("12m ago", "3d ago")
- Action tag (`image strip`, `image resize`, `secret redact`)
- Original path the backup came from
- Backup size
- **Restore** button — copies the backup back to its original path
- **Close (×)** button — deletes just this backup
## How restore works
Each backup is paired with a sidecar `.meta.json` file:
```json
{
"origPath": "/Users/you/.claude/projects/-Users-you-Projects-myapp/abc123.jsonl",
"action": "redact",
"createdAt": 1717459200000
}
```
`POST /api/backups/:name/restore` reads the sidecar, verifies the original parent directory still exists, and copies the backup back. The Restore button is disabled for legacy backups (pre-0.4) that don't have a sidecar — restore those manually from `~/.conclear/backups/`.
## What's safe
- Restore is non-destructive in one direction: it copies the backup *over* the current session file. If you want a backup of the *current* file before restoring, take one manually (or use any ConClear operation, which writes its own).
- Deleting a backup deletes the `.jsonl` file *and* its `.meta.json` sidecar.
- Sidecars are filtered out of the listing so they don't appear as their own entries.
## Storage
Backups grow over time. If `~/.conclear/backups/` gets large, **Delete all** is the cleanup. Nothing here is required for ConClear to function — backups are insurance, not state.
## Pairs with
- [Security](security.md) — redact's safety net
- [Strip Images](strip-images.md), [Resize Images](resize-images.md) — the other operations that write backups
## Session Detail Tabs
Open a session from the Sessions page and ConClear shows you a tabbed detail view. Tabs only appear for capabilities the adapter actually supports — a tab is grayed out if the session's tool doesn't implement it.
| Tab | What it shows | Adapters |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Files touched, key user messages, totals | all |
| Images | Inline previews of every screenshot in the session, with strip / resize / lightbox | all |
| Chat | Clean conversation viewer with role filters | all |
| Timeline | Every event in the session (edit, write, bash, search, image, error), paginated at 200 rows | all |
| Files | Per-file version history with syntax highlighting and diff view | Claude, Cline |
| Security | Findings from the scanner with rotate links and per-finding redact | Claude, Cline, Gemini, Cursor (scan only) |
## Header
Above the tabs:
- Session name with a colored health dot (red = high-severity finding, amber = oversized images, lime = clean)
- Tool badge + project + message + image + size counts
- Cost / usage tags (Cline today — tokens in / out, cache hits, total USD)
- **Copy resume command** — copies `<tool> --resume "<session>"` to clipboard
- **Export** — downloads markdown (where supported)
- **Close**
## Cached scan
The Security tab consumes the same module-level scan cache as the global Security page. Opening the tab doesn't re-scan; results are instant if the global scan has already touched this session.
## Pairs with
- [Sessions](session-browser.md) — the list view
- [Security](security.md) — the global security surface
## Images Tab
The Images tab shows all images embedded in the selected session. Each image is displayed as a thumbnail with metadata.
## Image Details
For each image, you can see:
- **Thumbnail preview** -- loaded on demand to avoid fetching all image data at once.
- **Size** -- the base64-encoded size in the session file.
- **Media type** -- e.g., `image/png`, `image/jpeg`.
- **Context** -- where in the conversation the image appears.
- **Timestamp** -- when the image was shared (if available).
## Image Actions
Click an image thumbnail to open it in a lightbox at full resolution. Press Escape to close.
### Per-Image Actions
- **Strip** -- replace the image with a tiny 1x1 pixel placeholder. The session file is rewritten with the base64 data removed.
- **Resize** -- shrink the image to a target file size using the resize menu.
### Bulk Actions
- **Strip All** -- strip every image in the session at once.
- **Resize All** -- resize all images to a target size.
Both bulk operations create a backup before modifying the session file.
## Oversized Image Detection
Images that exceed the 2000px dimension limit are flagged. ConClear detects these proactively so you can fix them before hitting the error during a session.
## Chat Tab
The Chat tab provides a conversation replay view for the selected session. It displays user and assistant messages with clean formatting.
## Message Display
Messages are rendered with:
- **Role indicator** -- user or assistant, visually distinguished.
- **Timestamp** -- when the message was sent.
- **Text content** -- the message body. Tool use results and internal protocol messages are filtered out for readability.
- **Image indicator** -- if the message includes an image, it is noted (and can be viewed in the Images tab).
## Full Panel Mode
Double-click the session or use the expand control to open the chat in full-panel mode, giving the conversation the full width of the window.
## Search
Search within the conversation to find specific messages. Matches are highlighted.
## Filtering
Filter messages by role (user only, assistant only, or both) to focus on specific parts of the conversation.
## Export
Export the conversation as a markdown document from the context menu or the toolbar. The export includes all user and assistant messages with timestamps and clean formatting.
## Timeline Tab
The Timeline tab shows a chronological event log of everything that happened during a session.
## Event Types
| Type | Description |
|------|-------------|
| `user` | User message |
| `assistant` | Assistant text response |
| `edit` | File edit operation |
| `read` | File read operation |
| `write` | File write operation |
| `bash` | Shell command execution |
| `search` | Grep or glob search |
| `agent` | Subagent spawn |
| `image` | Screenshot or image shared |
| `error` | Failed operation |
## Event Details
Each event shows:
- **Type badge** -- color-coded by event type.
- **Timestamp** -- when the event occurred.
- **Summary** -- one-line description (file path, command snippet, or first line of text).
- **Detail** -- expandable area with full content: complete text, command output, diff, etc.
- **File path** -- for file operations, the path that was read/edited/written.
- **Exit code** -- for bash commands, the process exit code.
- **Duration** -- for timed operations, how long they took.
## Filtering
Filter events by type using the toolbar controls. You can show/hide specific event types to focus on what matters -- for example, show only file edits, or only bash commands.
## Search
Search within the timeline to find specific events by content.
## Files Tab
The Files tab shows all files that were read, edited, or written during a session, with full version history.
## File List
Each file entry shows:
- **File path** -- the full path of the file.
- **Version count** -- how many times the file was touched during the session.
- **Operations** -- which operations were performed (read, edit, write).
- **Last modified** -- timestamp of the most recent version.
## Version History
Click a file to see all its versions. Each version shows:
- **Operation type** -- read, edit, or write.
- **Timestamp** -- when this version was captured.
- **Line count** and **size** -- dimensions of the file content.
- **Content preview** -- first 200 characters.
## Code Viewer
Click a version to open it in the code viewer with:
- **Syntax highlighting** -- powered by highlight.js, supporting all major languages.
- **Line numbers** -- for easy reference.
- **Copy button** -- copy the full file content to clipboard.
## File Recovery
The Files tab is useful for recovering lost code. If a file was edited or overwritten, you can browse to any previous version and copy its content. See the [File Recovery](file-recovery.md) section for details.
## CLI
ConClear includes a command-line interface for querying session history without starting the web server. All CLI commands read session files directly from disk.
```bash
conclear --help
```
## Command Categories
### Query Commands (no server needed)
These commands run standalone -- they read session data directly:
- `search` -- full-text search across sessions
- `files` -- find file versions from past sessions
- `sessions` -- list all indexed sessions
- `summary` -- get a session overview
- `context` -- dump clean conversation text
- `export` -- export session as markdown
- `scan` -- scan for potential secrets
### MCP Server
- `mcp` -- start the MCP server (stdio transport, default)
- `mcp --http [--port N]` -- start with Streamable HTTP transport (default port 7331)
### Install Lifecycle
These commands wire ConClear up to AI clients. See [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
- `install` -- auto-detect supported clients and install the MCP server (and Skill, where supported)
- `uninstall` -- remove the MCP server (and Skill) from clients
- `doctor` -- show install status per client, including warnings (e.g. Windsurf's ~100-tool cap)
### UI Launcher
- `conclear` (no arguments) -- start the web UI
- `conclear --ui` -- start the web UI
## Global Flags
| Flag | Description |
|------|-------------|
| `--json` | Output structured JSON (works on all query commands) |
| `--help`, `-h` | Show help |
## Session Resolution
All commands that take a session identifier support flexible matching:
1. Exact session ID (UUID)
2. Partial ID prefix
3. Exact session name (case-insensitive)
4. Partial name match
5. Preview text match
When multiple sessions match, the most recently active one is returned.
## Commands
## conclear search
Full-text search across all session messages.
```bash
conclear search <query> [--project <name>] [--limit <n>] [--json]
```
| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `--project <name>` | Filter to sessions whose project name contains this string |
| `--limit <n>` | Maximum results to return (default: 10) |
| `--json` | Output as JSON |
Output includes session name, timestamp, role (user/assistant), and a text snippet around the match.
## conclear files
Find file versions matching a path pattern across sessions.
```bash
conclear files <path-pattern> [--session <name-or-id>] [--latest] [--json]
```
| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `--session <name-or-id>` | Restrict search to a specific session |
| `--latest` | Include the content of the latest version |
| `--json` | Output as JSON |
The path pattern supports `*` and `**` glob syntax. When `--latest` is used with a single matching file, the content is written to stdout for piping.
## conclear sessions
List all indexed sessions, sorted by most recently active.
```bash
conclear sessions [--project <name>] [--limit <n>] [--json]
```
| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `--project <name>` | Filter by project name |
| `--limit <n>` | Maximum sessions to show (default: 20) |
| `--json` | Output as JSON |
Table output shows: name, project, last active date, message count, image count, and size.
## conclear summary
Quick summary of a specific session.
```bash
conclear summary <session-name-or-id> [--json]
```
Output includes:
- Session metadata (ID, name, project, dates)
- Message and image counts
- File size
- List of files touched (up to 20)
- Key user messages (up to 5)
## conclear context
Dump clean conversation text from a session. Includes only user and assistant messages -- no tool results or protocol noise.
```bash
conclear context <session-name-or-id> [--json]
```
Useful for piping session context into other tools:
```bash
conclear context my-session | head -200
```
## conclear export
Export a session as a clean markdown or text document.
```bash
conclear export <session-name-or-id> [--output <file>] [--format md|txt]
```
| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| `--output <file>`, `-o <file>` | Write to file instead of stdout |
| `--format md\|txt` | Output format (default: `md`) |
The `txt` format strips markdown syntax (headings, bold, code fences) for plain text output.
## conclear scan
Scan a session for potential secrets, API keys, and credentials.
```bash
conclear scan <session-name-or-id> [--json]
```
Output groups findings by severity (high, medium, low) and shows:
- Type (e.g., `api_key`, `bearer_token`, `aws_key`)
- Redacted pattern (first 4 and last 4 characters)
- Surrounding context
- Line number in the session file
## conclear install
Install the ConClear MCP server (and Skill, where supported) into your AI clients.
```bash
conclear install [--all] [--<client-id>...] [--no-skill]
```
| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| _(none)_ | Install into every detected client |
| `--all` | Install into every supported client, even undetected ones |
| `--<client-id>` | Install only for the named client(s) |
| `--no-skill` | Skip skill install (MCP only) |
Client IDs: `claude-code`, `claude-desktop`, `cursor`, `windsurf`, `vscode`, `antigravity`, `zed`, `cline`, `continue`, `codex`, `kiro`.
Examples:
```bash
conclear install
conclear install --cursor --claude-code
conclear install --all --no-skill
```
Each config edit is backed up to `~/.conclear/backups/`. Where a client provides its own CLI (`claude mcp add`, `code --add-mcp`, `codex mcp add`) ConClear uses it; otherwise the config file is merged directly. Zed edits are JSONC-aware (comments and formatting are preserved).
## conclear uninstall
Remove the ConClear MCP server (and Skill) from clients. Same flags as `install`.
```bash
conclear uninstall [--all] [--<client-id>...] [--no-skill]
```
`uninstall` ignores detection by default and operates on every supported client. Pass `--<client-id>` flags to target specific clients.
## conclear doctor
Show install status across all supported clients.
```bash
conclear doctor
```
Output shows, per client: whether the client is detected, whether the MCP server is installed, whether the Skill is installed (for clients that support skills), and any notes (e.g. Windsurf's ~100-tool cap, Kiro's inherited Amazon Q config path).
## Examples
## Search for a past discussion
```bash
conclear search "auth middleware" --project myapp --limit 5
```
## Find and recover a file version
```bash
# List all versions of a file across sessions
conclear files "api.ts"
# Get the latest version from a specific session
conclear files "api.ts" --session veesty-rebuild-plan --latest
# Pipe the content directly into a new file
conclear files "api.ts" --session veesty-rebuild-plan --latest > recovered.ts
```
## Review recent sessions
```bash
# List the 10 most recent sessions
conclear sessions --limit 10
# Filter by project
conclear sessions --project ConClear
```
## Get a session summary
```bash
conclear summary veesty-rebuild-plan
```
## Export a session for reference
```bash
# Export as markdown
conclear export my-session --output session.md
# Export as plain text
conclear export my-session --output session.txt --format txt
```
## Pipe context into current work
```bash
# Get the last 200 lines of conversation
conclear context my-session | head -200
# Use with AI tools that accept stdin
conclear context my-session | pbcopy
```
## Scan for leaked secrets
```bash
# Human-readable output
conclear scan my-session
# JSON for programmatic use
conclear scan my-session --json
```
## JSON output for scripting
All query commands support `--json` for structured output:
```bash
# Get session list as JSON
conclear sessions --json | jq '.[0].id'
# Search with JSON output
conclear search "database migration" --json | jq '.[] | .text'
```
## Install ConClear into your AI clients
```bash
# Detect and install for every supported client
conclear install
# Install for specific clients only
conclear install --claude-code --cursor
# Install for every supported client (even undetected ones), MCP only
conclear install --all --no-skill
# Check status afterward
conclear doctor
# Remove from a specific client
conclear uninstall --zed
```
## Start the MCP server over HTTP
```bash
# Streamable HTTP on default port 7331
conclear mcp --http
# Custom port
conclear mcp --http --port 8080
```
## MCP Server
ConClear runs as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server so AI agents can query your session history through tool use. It uses stdio transport, the standard for Claude Code MCP servers.
## Starting the Server
```bash
conclear mcp # stdio transport (default)
conclear mcp --http # Streamable HTTP on :7331
conclear mcp --http --port 8080
```
The server runs until the process is killed. In stdio mode it logs to stderr so it doesn't interfere with the MCP stdio protocol on stdout.
SSE transport is not supported — it has been deprecated upstream in favor of Streamable HTTP.
## Configuration
The recommended way to wire ConClear up to your AI client is `conclear install` — it auto-detects 10+ clients and handles per-client schema quirks. See [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
If you'd rather edit config by hand, the canonical MCP entry is:
```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"conclear": {
"command": "conclear",
"args": ["mcp"]
}
}
}
```
VS Code uses `servers` (not `mcpServers`) and requires `"type": "stdio"`. Zed nests under `context_servers` and requires `"source": "custom"`.
## Available Tools
### conclear_search
Search messages across all sessions by text query.
**Inputs:**
- `query` (string, required) -- text to search for
- `project` (string, optional) -- filter by project name
- `limit` (number, optional) -- max results (default: 20, max: 100)
**Returns:** JSON array of matches with `sessionId`, `sessionName`, `project`, `timestamp`, `role`, `text`.
### conclear_sessions
List available sessions, sorted by most recently active.
**Inputs:**
- `project` (string, optional) -- filter by project name
- `limit` (number, optional) -- max sessions (default: 20, max: 100)
**Returns:** JSON array of sessions with `id`, `name`, `preview`, `project`, `lastActive`, `messageCount`, `imageCount`, `size`.
### conclear_summary
Get a summary of a specific session including files touched and key user messages.
**Inputs:**
- `session` (string, required) -- session name, ID, or partial match
**Returns:** JSON object with session metadata, files touched, and key user messages.
### conclear_file_content
Get a specific file version from a session.
**Inputs:**
- `session` (string, required) -- session name, ID, or partial match
- `file_path` (string, required) -- file path or partial path to find
- `version` (number, optional) -- version index (0-based, defaults to latest)
**Returns:** JSON object with file path, version info, and content. If multiple files match, lists matches instead.
### conclear_context
Get clean conversation text from a session (user and assistant messages only).
**Inputs:**
- `session` (string, required) -- session name, ID, or partial match
- `limit` (number, optional) -- return only the last N messages
**Returns:** JSON array of messages with `role`, `timestamp`, `text`. Total output is capped at 100KB.
### conclear_files
List every file the agent read, edited, or wrote in a session, with version counts per file. Use this before `conclear_file_content` when you don't know the exact path — lets you pick the file you want by name, then fetch its content.
**Inputs:**
- `session` (string, required) -- session name, ID, or partial match
**Returns:** JSON array of `{ filePath, versionCount, latestOperation, latestTimestamp }`. Adapters that don't support file history (Cursor, Gemini, Copilot) return a descriptive error.
### conclear_scan_secrets
Scan a session for leaked API keys, tokens, AWS credentials, GitHub PATs, .env dumps, and other secrets. Matched values are returned with display redaction (first 4 / last 4 chars) so the agent can describe what leaked without re-exposing it.
**Inputs:**
- `session` (string, required) -- session name, ID, or partial match
**Returns:** JSON array of findings — `{ type, severity, pattern, context, lineNumber, timestamp }`. Empty array if nothing matched. Adapters that don't support scanning (Copilot today) return a descriptive error.
## Tool Annotations
All MCP tools are annotated as read-only, non-destructive, and idempotent. They do not modify session data. Redact and image-mutation operations are intentionally **not** exposed via MCP — destructive operations always go through the web UI for human confirmation.
## Operations
ConClear provides several operations for managing session data. All destructive operations create a timestamped backup before modifying any files.
## Safety
Before any operation that modifies a session file:
1. A backup is created in `~/.conclear/backups/`.
2. The backup is verified by comparing file sizes.
3. Only then is the original file modified.
Each backup also writes a `.meta.json` sidecar recording the original file path and the action that produced it (`strip` / `resize` / `redact`). The [Backups](backups.md) page uses these to offer one-click restore.
## Available Operations
- [Strip Images](strip-images.md) -- remove image data entirely, replacing with tiny placeholders.
- [Resize Images](resize-images.md) -- shrink images to a target file size.
- [File Recovery](file-recovery.md) -- recover previous file versions from session history.
- [Secret Scanning & Redact](secret-scanning.md) -- detect leaked credentials and rewrite them out of session files (with rotate links to actually invalidate them at the provider).
- [Export](export.md) -- export sessions as markdown documents.
For installing ConClear's MCP server (and Skill) into AI clients — a separate lifecycle from these data operations — see [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
## Strip Images
Stripping replaces image data in a session file with a tiny 1x1 pixel placeholder. The image metadata (position, media type) is preserved, but the large base64 payload is removed.
## From the Web UI
1. Select a session and open the **Images** tab.
2. To strip individual images: click the strip button on each image.
3. To strip all images: right-click the session and select "Strip all images", or use the bulk action in the toolbar.
4. Confirm the operation in the dialog.
A backup is created automatically before any modification.
## From the API
The server exposes a POST endpoint:
```
POST /api/sessions/:id/strip
Content-Type: application/json
{
"imageIds": ["img-0", "img-1"] // optional; omit to strip all
}
```
**Response:**
```json
{
"backupPath": "/Users/you/.conclear/backups/session_backup_2024-01-15T10-30-00-000Z",
"bytesReclaimed": 4521984
}
```
## How It Works
The strip operation reads the session file, finds image content blocks (identified by `type: "image"` with `source.type: "base64"`), and replaces the base64 data with a minimal 1x1 pixel PNG. The file is rewritten in place.
For Claude Code sessions (JSONL format), each line is processed independently. For JSON-based formats (Gemini, Cline, Copilot), the entire JSON structure is modified and rewritten.
## Resize Images
Resizing shrinks images to a target file size while preserving visual content. This is a less aggressive alternative to stripping -- the images remain viewable but take less space.
## From the Web UI
1. Select a session and open the **Images** tab.
2. Click the resize button on individual images, or use the bulk resize action.
3. Choose a target size from the resize menu.
4. Confirm the operation.
## From the API
```
POST /api/sessions/:id/resize
Content-Type: application/json
{
"imageIds": ["img-0", "img-1"], // optional; omit to resize all
"targetBytes": 102400 // target size per image (min 1024)
}
```
**Response:**
```json
{
"backupPath": "/Users/you/.conclear/backups/session_backup_2024-01-15T10-30-00-000Z",
"bytesReclaimed": 2150400
}
```
## How It Works
Resize uses the `sharp` library to:
1. Decode the base64 image data.
2. Progressively reduce dimensions and quality until the output is at or below the target byte size.
3. Re-encode as the original media type (or JPEG for lossy compression).
4. Replace the base64 data in the session file.
A backup is always created before modification.
## File Recovery
AI coding tools record every file they read, edit, or write during a session. ConClear indexes this data so you can recover previous versions of any file.
## From the Web UI
1. Select a session and open the **Files** tab.
2. Browse the list of files touched during the session.
3. Click a file to see all its versions.
4. Click a version to open it in the syntax-highlighted code viewer.
5. Use the copy button to copy the content to your clipboard.
## From the CLI
```bash
# Find all versions of a file across all sessions
conclear files "api.ts"
# Find versions in a specific session
conclear files "api.ts" --session my-session
# Get the latest version content
conclear files "api.ts" --session my-session --latest
# Pipe directly to a file for recovery
conclear files "api.ts" --session my-session --latest > recovered-api.ts
```
## From the MCP Server
Use the `conclear_file_content` tool:
```json
{
"session": "my-session",
"file_path": "api.ts",
"version": 0
}
```
The `version` parameter is 0-indexed. Omit it to get the latest version.
## What Gets Tracked
| Operation | Description |
|-----------|-------------|
| `read` | File was read by the AI tool (content at time of read) |
| `edit` | File was modified (content after edit) |
| `write` | New file was created (full content) |
Not all adapters support full file history. Currently, the Claude Code adapter provides the most complete file tracking.
## Secret Scanning & Redact
ConClear scans session files for pasted API keys, tokens, AWS credentials, GitHub PATs, `.env` dumps, bearer tokens, database URLs, and other secrets that AI coding sessions accumulate. Findings can be redacted in place — with a verified backup written first — and every finding type that maps to a known provider gets a one-click rotation link.
The whole pipeline is local. Scans run against on-disk files, results never leave your machine.
## The loop
ConClear's security workflow has three steps and the UI is designed around all of them:
1. **Surface** — scanner finds a match, redacts it for display (first 4 / last 4 chars of the value), shows you where it is.
2. **Redact on disk** — one click rewrites the session file replacing the matched value with `****REDACTED****`. A timestamped backup is written first.
3. **Rotate at the provider** — the finding's type maps to a "Rotate at …" link that opens the right page (OpenAI / Anthropic, AWS IAM, GitHub tokens, GitHub SSH keys). Redacting the file does *not* invalidate the credential at the provider — rotating is the part that actually closes the leak.
## From the CLI
```bash
# Scan a single session
conclear scan my-session
# JSON output
conclear scan my-session --json
```
## From the Web UI
- **Global**: the Security page lists every finding across every scannable session. "Redact all" runs over the full set with one click. Per-finding scissors button redacts just that match.
- **Per-session**: open a session and switch to the Security tab for the same redact + rotate controls scoped to that session.
## From the API
```
GET /api/sessions/:id/scan
POST /api/sessions/:id/redact # body: { lineNumber?: number, type?: string }
POST /api/backups/:name/restore # if you change your mind
```
## From MCP
Agents can call:
```
conclear_scan_secrets(session: "<name|id>")
```
Redact is intentionally *not* exposed via MCP — destructive operations always go through the UI for human confirmation.
## Finding types
Patterns and severities live in `src/server/adapters/secrets.ts` so they apply uniformly across every adapter that supports scanning.
| Type | Severity | What matches | Rotation target |
|---|---|---|---|
| `api_key` | high | `sk-…`, `sk-ant-…`, `sk-proj-…` (OpenAI / Anthropic shapes) | OpenAI / Anthropic API keys |
| `aws_key` | high | `AKIA[A-Z0-9]{16}` | AWS IAM |
| `aws_secret` | high | 40-char base64 near an `aws_secret` keyword | AWS IAM |
| `private_key` | high | `-----BEGIN ... PRIVATE KEY-----` | GitHub SSH keys (or your provider) |
| `github_token` | high | `ghp_`, `gho_`, `ghs_`, `github_pat_` | GitHub tokens |
| `bearer_token` | high | `Bearer <20+ chars>` | (no fixed URL — rotate at issuer) |
| `env_credential` | medium | `PASSWORD=…`, `SECRET=…`, `TOKEN=…`, `API_KEY=…` | (no fixed URL) |
| `database_url` | medium | `postgres://user:pass@…` and friends | (no fixed URL) |
| `webhook_token` | medium | webhook URLs with long opaque tail | (no fixed URL) |
| `env_file` | low | `read/write/load/cat/source .env` | (informational) |
| `sensitive_path` | low | paths under `credentials/`, `secrets/`, `keys/` | (informational) |
## Display redaction vs file redaction
There are two layers of redaction and they're independent:
- **Display redaction**: the scanner always shows `<first 4>****<last 4>` so the UI itself never leaks the secret. This happens whether or not you've redacted the file.
- **File redaction**: only runs when you click Redact. Rewrites the session file with `****REDACTED****` and writes a backup. Reversible from the Backups page.
## Coverage
| Tool | Scan | Redact |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cline / Roo Code | ✓ | ✓ |
| Gemini CLI | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cursor | ✓ | — (SQLite-blob rewrite deferred — rotate + delete the session in Cursor) |
| GitHub Copilot Chat | — | — |
## Limitations
The scanner uses regex pattern matching and can produce false positives — `aws_secret` in particular requires a nearby `aws_secret` / `AWS_SECRET` keyword to avoid every 40-character base64 string registering as one. It's not a replacement for `trufflehog` or `gitleaks`; it's a fast first pass against the specific failure mode of pasting secrets into AI chat.
## Export
ConClear can export sessions as clean markdown or plain text documents.
## From the CLI
```bash
# Export as markdown (default)
conclear export my-session --output session.md
# Export as plain text
conclear export my-session --output session.txt --format txt
# Write to stdout
conclear export my-session
```
## From the Web UI
- Right-click a session and select "Export as markdown".
- The browser downloads a `.md` file named after the session.
## From the API
```
GET /api/sessions/:id/export
```
Returns a markdown file as an attachment download. The `Content-Disposition` header includes a sanitized filename based on the session name.
## Markdown Format
The exported markdown includes:
- Session metadata header (name, project, dates)
- All user and assistant messages with timestamps
- Clean formatting with role labels
- Code blocks preserved
## Plain Text Format
When `--format txt` is used, the exporter strips markdown syntax:
- Heading markers (`#`) are removed
- Bold markers (`**`) are removed
- Blockquotes (`>`) become indentation
- Code fences are removed (code content is preserved)
## Supported Tools
This page covers the AI coding tools ConClear **reads session data from**. For the separate list of AI clients ConClear can **install its MCP server into**, see [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
A note on Windsurf: ConClear can install its MCP server into Windsurf (`conclear install --windsurf`), but cannot currently *read* Windsurf chat history — Cascade stores conversations as encrypted protobuf, and decoding them would require reverse-engineering Codeium's encryption.
ConClear reads session data from five AI coding tools. Each tool stores session data in a different format and location. ConClear auto-detects which tools are installed by checking their standard data directories.
| Tool | Format | Data Location |
|------|--------|---------------|
| Claude Code | JSONL | `~/.claude/projects/` |
| Gemini CLI | JSON | `~/.gemini/tmp/` |
| Cursor | SQLite | `~/Library/Application Support/Cursor/` (macOS) |
| Cline / Roo Code | JSON | VS Code `globalStorage/` |
| GitHub Copilot | JSON | VS Code `workspaceStorage/` |
## Capability matrix
What each adapter actually implements today. Anything missing here is a planned gap, not a hidden feature.
| Tool | Read | Images | File history | Scan | Redact | Export |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cline / Roo Code | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Gemini CLI | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Cursor | ✓ | ✓ | — | ✓ | — | — |
| GitHub Copilot Chat | ✓ | — | — | — | — | — |
Cursor redact is intentionally deferred — rewriting live SQLite blobs while Cursor is running is risky. Use the [Security](security.md) page's rotate links to roll any leaked credentials and delete the affected session inside Cursor itself.
## Detection
On startup, ConClear checks each tool's data directory. If the directory exists, that adapter is activated and its sessions are included in the unified session list.
No configuration is needed. If you install a new tool later, ConClear will pick it up automatically on the next scan.
## Cross-Platform Paths
ConClear resolves data directories based on the current platform:
| Platform | VS Code / Cursor base |
|----------|-----------------------|
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/<app>/` |
| Windows | `%APPDATA%/<app>/` |
| Linux | `~/.config/<app>/` |
## Claude Code
## Data Format
Claude Code stores sessions as JSONL (JSON Lines) files. Each line is a self-contained JSON object representing a message or event.
## Data Location
```
~/.claude/projects/<project-dir>/<session-id>.jsonl
```
Project directories are named with an encoded path, e.g., `-Volumes-4tbCache--Projects-ConClear`.
Session metadata (including custom names set via `/resume`) is stored separately:
```
~/.claude/sessions/<session-id>.json
```
## Session Structure
Each JSONL line has a `type` field:
- `user` -- user message
- `assistant` -- assistant response
- `result` -- tool result
Messages contain a `message` object with `role` and `content`. Content can be a string or an array of content blocks:
- `text` blocks -- plain text
- `image` blocks -- base64-encoded images with `source.type: "base64"`
- `tool_use` blocks -- tool invocations
- `tool_result` blocks -- tool outputs
## Features Supported
- Full session listing with metadata
- Image preview, strip, resize, and restore
- Conversation replay
- Timeline event extraction
- File version history with content recovery
- Secret scanning
- Markdown export
- Mtime-based caching for fast re-scans
## Session Name Resolution
ConClear cross-references JSONL filenames with `~/.claude/sessions/*.json` metadata files to display custom session names set via Claude Code's `/resume` command.
## Installing into Claude Code
Run `conclear install --claude-code` to add ConClear as an MCP server and install the Skill at `~/.claude/skills/conclear/SKILL.md`. ConClear uses `claude mcp add` when the CLI is available; otherwise it edits `~/.claude.json` directly. See [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
## Cursor
## Data Format
Cursor stores conversation data in a SQLite database (`state.vscdb`) within its application data directory.
## Data Location
```
# macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Cursor/User/globalStorage/state.vscdb
# Windows
%APPDATA%/Cursor/User/globalStorage/state.vscdb
# Linux
~/.config/Cursor/User/globalStorage/state.vscdb
```
## Features Supported
- Session listing from database records
- Image preview, strip, and restore
- Conversation replay (including structured tool calls — `toolFormerData.name` + `rawArgs` + `result`)
- SQLite-aware full-text search (`searchMessages`) via the cursor adapter's per-bubble query rather than the line-based default
- **Secret scanning** — walks every bubble's text + `toolFormerData.rawArgs` + `result` against the same pattern table the other adapters use
- Backup of the database file before any mutation
## Not yet
- **Redact** is intentionally not implemented. Rewriting blobs in a live SQLite database while Cursor is running is risky, and Cursor's caching layer makes the invalidation story murky. Use the Security page's rotate links to roll the credential at the provider, and delete the affected session inside Cursor itself if you want the data gone.
- **File history** — Cursor stores tool calls in `toolFormerData` blobs; the shape is parseable but not yet wired through `getFileHistory`.
## Notes
Since Cursor uses a single SQLite database rather than individual session files, backups copy the entire database. The adapter reads conversation data from specific database keys and parses the embedded JSON structures.
## Installing into Cursor
Run `conclear install --cursor` to add ConClear as an MCP server at `~/.cursor/mcp.json` and (Cursor v2.2+) install the Skill at `~/.cursor/skills/conclear/SKILL.md`. See [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
## Gemini CLI
## Data Format
Gemini CLI stores sessions as JSON files within a project-specific directory structure.
## Data Location
```
~/.gemini/tmp/<project-hash>/chats/session-<id>.json
```
Each session file is a complete JSON document containing the full conversation with all messages, tool uses, and embedded images.
## Features Supported
- Session listing with metadata
- Image preview, strip, and restore
- Conversation replay
- Secret scanning and **in-place redact** across all three Gemini content shapes (string, `{ text }`, `parts[]`)
- Markdown export
- Mtime-based caching for fast re-scans
## Not yet
- File history (no equivalent file-version structure in Gemini CLI's session format)
## Detection
ConClear checks for the existence of `~/.gemini/` to determine if Gemini CLI is installed. It then scans all project directories under `~/.gemini/tmp/` for `chats/session-*.json` files.
## Cline & Roo Code
## Data Format
Both Cline and Roo Code use the same directory structure under VS Code's `globalStorage`. Each task (session) has its own directory containing JSON files.
## Data Location
```
# Cline
<VS Code globalStorage>/saoudrizwan.claude-dev/tasks/<task-id>/
# Roo Code
<VS Code globalStorage>/rooveterinaryinc.roo-cline/tasks/<task-id>/
```
Where VS Code `globalStorage` is:
| Platform | Path |
|----------|------|
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/globalStorage/` |
| Windows | `%APPDATA%/Code/User/globalStorage/` |
| Linux | `~/.config/Code/User/globalStorage/` |
## Features Supported
- Session listing with metadata
- Image preview, strip, resize, and restore
- Conversation replay
- File history with full version content
- Secret scanning and **in-place redact**
- Markdown export
- Token / cost analytics from `task_metadata.json` (`tokensIn`, `tokensOut`, `cacheReads`, `cacheWrites`, `totalCostUsd`)
## Notes
ConClear scans both Cline and Roo Code directories. Sessions from both tools appear in the unified session list, distinguished by their tool label. Redact rewrites the `api_conversation_history.json` file as pretty-printed JSON to keep diffs clean.
## GitHub Copilot
## Data Format
GitHub Copilot Chat stores conversation data as JSON files within VS Code's `workspaceStorage` directory.
## Data Location
```
<VS Code workspaceStorage>/<workspace-hash>/
```
Where VS Code `workspaceStorage` is:
| Platform | Path |
|----------|------|
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/workspaceStorage/` |
| Windows | `%APPDATA%/Code/User/workspaceStorage/` |
| Linux | `~/.config/Code/User/workspaceStorage/` |
## Features Supported
- Session listing with metadata
- Image preview, strip, and restore
- Conversation replay
## Detection
ConClear scans the workspace storage directory for Copilot chat data files. Sessions are included in the unified list alongside other tools.
## Architecture
ConClear is a full-stack TypeScript application with three main components:
## Components
### Express Server (`src/server/`)
A local Express 5 server that:
- Serves the REST API on `/api/` routes.
- In production, serves the built Vite frontend as static files.
- Runs on port 3789.
### React Frontend (`src/client/`)
A React 19 single-page application built with Vite. Key components:
| Component | Purpose |
|-----------|---------|
| `SessionTable` | Session list with search and navigation |
| `PaneLayout` | Split-pane layout manager |
| `ImagePreview` | Image thumbnails and lightbox |
| `TimelineView` | Chronological event log |
| `ConversationView` | Chat message replay |
| `FilesView` | File version browser with code viewer |
| `DiskUsage` | Size visualization |
| `Toolbar` | Tab switcher and actions |
| `ContextMenu` | Right-click menu via Radix UI |
| `ResizeMenu` | Target size selector for resize operations |
| `ScanResults` | Secret scanning results display |
| `BackupManager` | View and manage backups |
| `ConfirmDialog` | Confirmation for destructive operations |
| `HelpPanel` | Keyboard shortcuts and help |
| `Toast` | Notification messages |
| `SizeIndicator` | Visual size badges |
| `HighlightText` | Search match highlighting |
### CLI (`src/cli.ts`, `src/cli-query.ts`)
Zero-dependency CLI that dispatches to query functions, the MCP server, the install lifecycle commands, or the web server. Query commands import the Claude adapter directly -- no server needed.
### MCP Server (`src/mcp-server.ts`)
MCP server using `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk`. Supports both stdio transport (default) and Streamable HTTP (`conclear mcp --http`). Registers five tools for AI agent access.
### Install lifecycle (`src/install/`)
A second adapter system, separate from the session-reading adapters, that wires ConClear into AI clients (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Google Antigravity, Zed, Cline, Continue, Codex CLI, Kiro CLI). Each client gets its own adapter under `src/install/clients/*.ts` implementing detect/install/uninstall/status. Powers `conclear install`, `conclear uninstall`, and `conclear doctor`.
Key pieces:
| File | Purpose |
|------|---------|
| `src/install/types.ts` | `ClientAdapter` interface |
| `src/install/paths.ts` | Per-platform config and skills paths for every supported client |
| `src/install/mcp-file.ts` | Generic JSON read-merge-write for file-based clients |
| `src/install/jsonc-util.ts` | JSONC-aware variant (Zed) using `jsonc-parser` so comments/formatting survive edits |
| `src/install/skill.ts` | Copies `skill.md` → `<client-skills-dir>/conclear/SKILL.md` |
| `src/install/clients/*.ts` | One adapter per client; routes to CLI, file, JSONC, or manual path |
| `src/install/index.ts` | Orchestrates detect → install / uninstall / status across selected adapters |
All config edits create a timestamped backup under `~/.conclear/backups/`.
## Dependencies
| Package | Purpose |
|---------|---------|
| `express` | HTTP server |
| `react`, `react-dom` | Frontend UI |
| `sharp` | Image resizing |
| `highlight.js` | Syntax highlighting |
| `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` | MCP server implementation |
| `@radix-ui/*` | UI primitives (context menu, tooltip, scroll area, separator) |
| `zod` | Schema validation (MCP tool inputs) |
| `open` | Open browser on startup |
| `jsonc-parser` | JSONC-aware edits for Zed's `settings.json` |
| `vite` | Frontend build tool |
| `tsx` | TypeScript execution for dev mode |
## Build
```bash
npm run build
```
This runs Vite to build the frontend, then `tsc` to compile the server TypeScript. Output goes to `dist/`.
## Adapter Pattern
ConClear uses two parallel adapter systems for two different purposes:
1. **Session-reading adapters** (`src/server/adapters/`) — parse session data from each AI coding tool. The rest of this page describes these.
2. **Client-install adapters** (`src/install/clients/`) — install ConClear's MCP server (and Skill) into each AI client. Covered briefly at the bottom of this page; full reference in [Install into AI Clients](install.md).
## Session-reading adapters
These let ConClear read session data from multiple AI coding tools. Each tool gets its own adapter that implements a common interface.
## The Adapter Interface
Every adapter must implement the `Adapter` interface defined in `src/server/adapters/types.ts`:
```typescript
interface Adapter {
name: string;
detect(): Promise<boolean>;
listSessions(): Promise<Session[]>;
getSessionDetail(sessionId: string): Promise<SessionDetail>;
getImageData(sessionId: string, imageId: string): Promise<ImageData>;
stripImages(sessionId: string, imageIds: string[]): Promise<{ backupPath: string; bytesReclaimed: number }>;
stripAllImages(sessionId: string): Promise<{ backupPath: string; bytesReclaimed: number }>;
restoreImage(sessionId: string, imageId: string, base64: string, mediaType: string): Promise<void>;
}
```
## Adapter Responsibilities
Each adapter handles:
1. **Detection** -- check if the tool's data directory exists.
2. **Session listing** -- scan the data directory and parse session metadata.
3. **Session detail** -- parse a specific session for full metadata including image inventory.
4. **Image operations** -- extract, strip, resize, and restore images in the tool's native format.
5. **Conversation parsing** -- extract chat messages for the conversation view.
6. **File history** -- extract file read/edit/write events (where supported).
## Existing Adapters
| Adapter | File | Format |
|---------|------|--------|
| `ClaudeAdapter` | `src/server/adapters/claude/` | JSONL line-by-line parsing |
| `GeminiAdapter` | `src/server/adapters/gemini/` | JSON document parsing |
| `CursorAdapter` | `src/server/adapters/cursor/` | SQLite database queries |
| `ClineAdapter` | `src/server/adapters/cline/` | JSON task directory parsing |
| `CopilotAdapter` | `src/server/adapters/copilot/` | JSON workspace storage parsing |
Each adapter directory contains:
- `index.ts` -- the adapter class implementing the `Adapter` interface.
- `parser.ts` -- format-specific parsing logic.
## Adding a New Adapter
To add support for a new AI coding tool:
1. Create a new directory under `src/server/adapters/<tool-name>/`.
2. Create `parser.ts` with format-specific parsing functions.
3. Create `index.ts` with a class implementing the `Adapter` interface.
4. Register the adapter in `src/server/routes/sessions.ts` by adding it to the `adapters` array.
The router iterates through all adapters for each request. If an adapter's `detect()` returns `true`, it participates in the session listing and can handle session-specific requests.
## Caching
Adapters use mtime-based caching. Each session file's modification time is tracked, and only files that have changed since the last scan are re-parsed. This makes repeated scans fast even with hundreds of sessions.
## Backup Strategy
All adapters create backups in `~/.conclear/backups/` before modifying session data. Backup filenames include the tool name and a timestamp for identification. Backup integrity is verified by comparing file sizes after the copy.
## Client-install adapters
A separate adapter system under `src/install/clients/` handles installing ConClear's MCP server (and Skill, where supported) into AI clients. These adapters are independent from the session-reading adapters above — they touch *the client's* config, not session data.
The `ClientAdapter` interface lives in `src/install/types.ts`:
```typescript
interface ClientAdapter {
id: string; // e.g. "cursor"
displayName: string; // e.g. "Cursor"
method: 'cli' | 'file' | 'deeplink' | 'manual';
supportsSkill: boolean;
platforms?: NodeJS.Platform[];
detect(): Promise<boolean>;
installMcp(): Promise<InstallResult>;
uninstallMcp(): Promise<InstallResult>;
installSkill?(): Promise<InstallResult>;
uninstallSkill?(): Promise<InstallResult>;
status(): Promise<ClientStatus>;
}
```
Adapters route MCP install through one of:
- a client-provided CLI (`claude mcp add`, `code --add-mcp`, `codex mcp add`)
- a direct JSON file merge (`src/install/mcp-file.ts`)
- a JSONC-aware file merge that preserves comments (`src/install/jsonc-util.ts`, used for Zed)
- a manual snippet printed to the user (Continue, until a YAML parser is worth the dep)
Skill install (where the client has a skills system) is a simple copy of the bundled `skill.md` into `<client-skills-dir>/conclear/SKILL.md`.
Supported clients (Jun 2026): Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Google Antigravity, Zed, Cline, Continue (manual), Codex CLI, Kiro CLI.
Adding a new client = one file under `src/install/clients/` plus a registry entry in `src/install/adapters.ts`. See [Install into AI Clients](install.md) for the user-facing reference.
## Data Formats
## Session
The normalized `Session` type used across all adapters:
```typescript
interface Session {
id: string; // unique session identifier
name: string | null; // custom name (e.g., from /resume)
preview: string | null; // first user message preview
project: string; // project directory identifier
tool: 'claude' | 'gemini' | 'cursor' | 'cline' | 'copilot';
createdAt: number; // timestamp (ms since epoch)
lastActiveAt: number; // timestamp (ms since epoch)
messageCount: number; // total messages
imageCount: number; // embedded images
totalSizeBytes: number; // session file size
imageSizeBytes: number; // total image data size
filePath: string; // path to session file on disk
hasOversizedImages: boolean; // any image exceeds 2000px
maxImageDimension: number; // largest image dimension
}
```
## SessionDetail
Extended session data including the image inventory:
```typescript
interface SessionDetail extends Session {
images: SessionImage[];
toolResultSizeBytes: number;
}
```
## SessionImage
```typescript
interface SessionImage {
id: string; // unique image ID within session
lineNumber: number; // position in session file
toolUse?: string; // tool name if this is a tool use message
hasImage: boolean;
imageId?: string;
}
```
## TimelineEvent
```typescript
type TimelineEventType =
| 'user' | 'assistant' | 'edit' | 'read' | 'write'
| 'bash' | 'search' | 'agent' | 'image' | 'error';
filePath?: string; // for file operations
exitCode?: number; // for bash commands
imageId?: string; // for image events
durationMs?: number; // for timed operations
}
```
## FileVersion
```typescript
interface FileVersion {
filePath: string;
timestamp?: string;
operation: 'read' | 'edit' | 'write';
contentPreview: string; // first 200 characters
lineCount: number;
sizeBytes: number;
lineNumber: number; // position in session file for retrieval
}
```
## FileHistory
```typescript
interface FileHistory {
filePath: string;
versions: FileVersion[];
}
```
## SecretFinding
```typescript
interface SecretFinding {
type: string; // e.g., "api_key", "bearer_token"
pattern: string; // redacted match (first 4 + last 4 chars)
context: string; // surrounding text (truncated, redacted)
lineNumber: number; // position in session file
timestamp?: string;
severity: 'high' | 'medium' | 'low';
}
```
