# Helicone System Architecture

## Core Components

1. **Frontend (Web)** - Next.js application
   - Dashboard UI for visualization and management
   - Located in `/web` directory

2. **Proxy Workers** - Cloudflare Workers
   - Intercept and process API calls to LLM providers
   - Located in `/worker` directory
   - Separate workers for OpenAI, Anthropic, and general API

3. **Jawn Server** - Express.js + Tsoa backend
   - Core business logic and data processing
   - Located in `/valhalla/jawn` directory
   - Handles authentication, logging, and analytics

4. **Bifrost** - Landing page and blog application
   - Marketing website and documentation
   - Located in `/bifrost` directory

5. **Databases**
   - **PostgreSQL** (via Supabase): User data, organizations, API keys
   - **ClickHouse**: High-performance analytics storage for request logs

6. **Object Storage** - Minio/S3 compatible
   - Stores large request/response payloads
   - Enables efficient retrieval of historical data

7. **Upstash** - Redis-compatible message queue
   - Buffers requests between proxy and backend
   - Ensures reliable delivery of logging data

## Directory Structure

```
/helicone
├── /web                 # Next.js frontend dashboard
├── /worker              # Cloudflare Workers proxy
│   ├── /src/routers     # API provider-specific routers
│   └── /src/lib         # Shared utilities
├── /valhalla
│   └── /jawn            # Express.js backend server
├── /bifrost             # Landing page and blog
│   ├── /typescript      # TypeScript SDK
│   └── /python          # Python SDK
```

## Data Flow

1. **Request Interception**:
   - Client request → Helicone Proxy → LLM Provider
   - Proxy adds tracking headers and applies features

2. **Response Processing**:
   - LLM Provider → Helicone Proxy → Client
   - Proxy sends log data to Upstash queue

3. **Log Processing**:
   - Upstash queue → Jawn server
   - Jawn processes and stores logs in databases

4. **Data Storage**:
   - Request metadata → PostgreSQL
   - Analytics data → ClickHouse
   - Large payloads → Object Storage

5. **Analytics Processing**:
   - Jawn server processes logs for insights
   - Aggregates metrics for dashboard visualization

## System Interactions

- **Frontend ↔ Jawn**: REST API for dashboard data
- **Proxy ↔ Upstash**: Asynchronous message queuing
- **Upstash ↔ Jawn**: Reliable message delivery
- **Jawn ↔ Databases**: Data storage and retrieval

## Technical Implementation

- **Frontend**: React, Next.js, Tailwind CSS
- **Proxy**: Cloudflare Workers, TypeScript
- **Backend**: Express.js, Tsoa, TypeScript
- **Bifrost**: Next.js, React, TypeScript
- **Databases**: PostgreSQL, ClickHouse
- **Queue**: Upstash Redis

## Key Files for Development

- `/worker/src/index.ts`: Entry point for proxy workers
- `/worker/src/routers/`: Provider-specific routing logic
- `/valhalla/jawn/src/index.ts`: Backend server entry point
- `/web/pages/`: Frontend dashboard components
- `/bifrost/pages/`: Landing page and blog components
